Hi

Im going on a Doc shoot pretty well solo with my RED. Im going to have to trek into some big old forests etc. Suffice to say a pelican case aint going to work for this job.

Any reccomendations for a rugged back pack to carry the RED, my Petroff Clip on Mattebox, 5 Batteries and a couple RED zooms.

If it had wheels for pavement areas that would be a bonus.

Thanks

Maybe Cinebags has improved recently but most of their stuff doesn't actually hold together over time and heavy production use. Their RED pouches are great, air can/water bottle holder is their best product (still have my 1st one, it is 6 years old).

The bigger bags wear out quickly from real use on set. The small acces. pouch wore out in 4 months and the AC pouch... well, it just doesn't cut it.

And they're expensive as all hell.

And I'm against the backpack storage of a RED...

But I do use the Cinebags shoulder strap as part of my camera sling set up.

The revolution looks cool but still relatively small. And thanks for the review on the durability.

From my research- Lowepro seems to have the biggest bags and my lowpro stuff holds up well.

Obvioulsy no one wants to tote the Red around in a backpack but what else are you going to do if you have to go 5k over rough terrain?

I've been using the Tamrac 5258 backback for a year now, and it's great.
I think it was Gibby and some others who recommended it on another thread long ago.

You can take it as a carry on luggage on a plane, and still put a lot of stuff in there :
- camera body
- 2 Red Zooms (18-50 + 50-150)
- 2 Red drives
- a few batteries (not sure how many, probably not 5 though, maybe 2...)
- a 17" laptop
- and there are loads of pockets for small accessories and cables
Not sure if the mattebox will fit.

And it's quite comfortable.

I have a 5 year old KATA rigid shell bag for my DV camcorder system that still works as good as the day it was new. Very well made, excellent hardware, nothing's ever broken or worn out.

I love the Cinebag bag design and marketing but had a funny feeling that it may not hold up??? I can tell you that I have Portabrace stuff that is approaching 15 years and it is still kickin!!! I also have some Kata (which I don't really like) but it also seems pretty well built! So, I am super down with that Revolution bag in Camo or a Red Edition Black/Red but it has to be Portabrace tough for me to even consider!!!

I can't find the thread right now but a while back I saw some good reviews on the Thinktank camera bags. the thread had photos with RED in pack and all.

Anyone know where to find that thread?

EDIT: Here is the thread I was talking about by Steve Sherrick http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=29923&highlight=thinktank

Think Tank Airport Addicted v2.0 backpack (not a wheelie design though) holds 20kg of RED kit, comes with LOADs of dividers, and is really great for airline carry-on but the straps system doesn't really spread load well enough for a large, heavy RED kit if doing extended hiking imo.

Lowepro Computer Trekker Plus AW holds almost as much, has a great strap system, built-in All Weather cover, and 17" laptop compartment, and is really comfortable for long distances, but my main gripes are that they could supply more dividers, and that the tripod pocket and elastic cord system doesn't work well, although you can make the side pocket loops serve the same function well and secure with non-elastic luggage straps from any camping store.

Highly recommend Kata gear. They do not break down. I've had bags in extensive use for 10 years. No failures. And their customer service is great.

I've packed a Red in an HB 207 with lenses (Nikon) and trekked some good distances through weather. Comfortable and everything safe and sound. They make an even bigger backpack, but I'm a small guy and this one is more comfortable. Also takes laptop, trolley, etc. I have some Portabrace stuff, a couple of Tamrac bags -- and they are fine as well. But to me nothing is as robust and comfortable and protective as what Kata makes. (Also like the bright interiors, easy to see/find stuff). The fact Kata makes the protective gear for the Israeli military says something about how they build stuff.

I've had the Think Tank Airport Addicted for almost a year now, and am very, very happy with it when out alone. See post #7 for a set-up http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=35643

And it's all Rodney Charters fault ;) http://visualnary.com/2008/10/09/rodney-charters-travels-the-world-in-red.html

Don´t be afraid of the Kata Grizzly 3! Great to take the entire equipment in one bag. Works with wheels, as a shoulder bag (very big) or bagpack. Even a Red with Cooke 20-100mm mounted fits in it. I love it, its my everyday bag, but for very long walks I prefer a bagpack like Kennan mentioned.

Would love to see a pic of Red in that pack, Kennan.

BTW, are you going to be up on the California coast for those dates I sent you in mid June? I'm going to some kind of event from the Galen Rowell foundation in SF right before those dates I gave you, honoring David Breashears (IMAX Everest).
