  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Fast Prime Set WOW

I thought we would hear something today on the LP primes..... Like price.... Need to know.

That's why they are called Mystery Primes :001_tt2: That was corny. Sorry .Thanks for resurrecting this thread. I was curious myself.

I was wondering about availability and ETA on samples.

Samples should start making their way around pretty soon.
However, Otto still has the first 20 sets earmarked. And once they have those, I believe they have the option to reserve the next 20 sets. So I would say go to Otto for a sample cause it's gonna be a while.

No problem Matthew, and thanks again for sharing so much of your info and knowledge on these pages.

...so they may be hogging up all first 40 sets. Sounds like a smart move. Was it mentioned when they might be getting their firsts?

Camera brothers & sisters,

Lens information will be coming soon, but not today. I'm paraphrasing, but a believe a wise man once said "Everything in life changes ... even delivery dates"

Pricing & delivery schedule will definitely be posted here within a few minutes of it being finalized, I can guarantee you that.

In testing the early prototypes, I saw two kinds of reactions from people in the room, big smiles or big frowns. I hope you think they are worth the wait.

Best,

Price should be between Cooke S4 and Master Primes.

What??? It was supposed to be between Ultra Primes and S4's. Did it go up already?

It sounds like we should buy a set from Otto, what are they going to do with 20 sets?

Only 50% of the people were smiling? Thats not a good ratio.... I think Red had about 92% of the people smiling at NAB who checked out the RPP primes.

Price should be between Cooke S4 and Master Primes.

will be interesting how they will be accepted at this pricepoint. if you can get for 25% more money Master Primes, well, you get Master Primes...or for the same money you get, well, Cooke S5 with T1.4.

Decades of experience are in that price too. And worldwide support.

Wish you all the best. Its always good to have choices!

First they saw the image and then the price?

I guess that the frowns were from competitors :)

XiaoSu Han you are wise... and jonnycom, not so much.

These lenses definitely interest experienced professional lens folk who actually know what makes a great lens and what types of design innovations were necessary to pull off these designs. If they make competing products they may frown out of concern.

I'm just sayin...

Leica Rumors mentioned before that the price is about in euros (€) 15.000,00 per lens which is not bad.

The set costs euro (€) 150.000,00 without taxes (10 lenses now, later will be add more lenses).

Not to say that those lenses are the best lenses you can buy, could be even better than Master Primes, new Cooke 5/i, I-lumina speeds or any other cine lenses.

They are multi aspherical design lenses.

It's not only about a speed or MTF it's more about other things that make a great lens design:

"Any lens exhibits a number of characteristics that are difficult to measure, if at all. One of the main issues is the behaviour of the lens in the presence

of stray light (veiling glare and secondary reflections). But this is too general: we need to study this in bright daylight, dark but contrasty situations, at

several apertures and with the light sources at different distances, angular positions and several other parameters. We need to know the behaviour of

the lens at several distances, not only close up and infinity. We need to see the colour reproduction in several lighting situations, we need to study the

unsharpness gradient at several distances, and with the background/foreground subjects at different relative positions to the main subject, we need to

study the most important topic of focus shift when stopping down and its impact of the shift in relative fore/background unsharpness. These topics do

define a lens in real life picture taking, in addition to the spatial resolution and the distribution of the image quality over the image area."

It is something that you can finally owe a set of Panavision Primo spherical lenses and even more because they are extremely lightweight

and make them more attractive for a handheld, stedicam, etc,...

Still without a name: Mystery primes(?) The latest advertisement from AC magazine Digital Edition March 2010

They look like very good lenses. The only concern I would have is with support. In my experience Leica has very poor customer service. I contacted them on several occasions and they either respond with the answer to questions that I haven't asked or not at all. It takes weeks or months to get a response too. On the other hand, Zeiss was extremely helpful. Not only I got the answers that I was looking for but the answers came directly from highly respectable sources and contained exhaustive amount of information. Examplary service!

Yes, the MTF is not everything.

Just my personal experience, that's all.

Another problem with Leica: WAY WAY WAY EXPENSIVE. If Leica is involved with these lenses, God only knows how crazy expensive they will be. Leica's fast 50 for stills goes for $10,000.

Pawel,

if you owe the newest Leica lenses there is no problem to service them, but if you want to service a vintage stuff it's like with any other brand,...

Also for service of Mystery Primes are probably responsible Band Pro (reseller agent) and CW SonderOptic (maker).

Sanjin,

I was not interested in servicing the lenses. I wanted to know certain optical properties, such as the position of entrance pupil or optical specifications of a drop-in filter. Also, I'm not talking about "vintage" lenses. This information would not come from Band-Pro or Arri. It has to flow down from the lens design team: Leica or Zeiss respectively.

Pawel,

probably during NAB it should be everything about the set name, technical specs and prices already online.
