  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED DAY... Feb. 13th

I was at Red Day this morning... saw footage of the new MX sensor projected with Sony´s latest 4K projector and put the Epic on my shoulder to get a feel for it... that´s all I needed to know... the weight and form factor are great... the latitude is great... I´m sold... Epic 5K will be my choice if I can´t afford to shoot on film... and I very rarely do these days...

I own a R1 for 1 1/2 years now... it has been a great treat to work with that camera... but I was definitely not a fanboy... I always had issues with the low light capacities, expecially under tungsten... the boot up time, the power cable that sticks out of the back, the form factor and especially with the weight...

I love to work hend held from the shoulder... but the R1 was just too heavy and cumbersome for my taste... the new model is beautiful... it has the right weight... I don´t have any issues with the balance... I don´t have to wait a minute for it to power up... it has the small batteries that will allow me to get rid of those heavy V-lock batteries... I think they have done and will continue to do a great job... people that are dedicated to push the envelope and stir up a little ruckus is the best thing that can happen to any industry... it keeps everybody on their toes and I´m sure in the future we´ll see a lot of new developments from all the other brilliant minds at the other camera companies triggered by that...

thumbs up and thank´s to Red and the DCS for the great presentation...

please let secret #21 be an onboard blueray burner *fingers crossed*

What about the "new cool stuff" Jim talked about ? :hurray:

as far as I can tell that must have been the accessories... mattebox prototype was there, the gunner rig was pretty cool... additional features in redcine x... it´s all coming together... but I´m in no hurry... the more time they have the better the final product will be...

OK, you guys are officialy intoxicated with hype. There is NO "secret #21". That was just an oversight on the list before publishing it! :emote_popcorn:

It transforms into a coffee table. Red knows film people... COFFEE LOVERS.

I had to cancel my afternoon slot, so if anyone really, really wants in to see the 4k projections there may be a spot open.

I wouldn´t say intoxicted... they projected two reels in 4k... one reel with full debayered footage from the original sensor... because very few people had ever seen that footage projected in 4k... and a second reel with full debayered MX footage projected in 4k...

I didn´t like all the footage I saw... but that was just a matter of taste... you can capture badly lit footage with every imaging system... you can still tell that it is digital capture... that was at least my impression... but if you light it well or know how to use available light to your advantage and how to squeeze the best possible image out of the sensor and post it is a great tool...

they also talked about the ASA rating of the new sensor, which they said would sit comfortably at 800 ASA... but depending on the shooting situation might yield a better quality at different settings... and there have been improvements to the color science that might have already been covered in this forum but I´m not sure...

as with every imaging system, digital or film, everybody will need to do his own tests and figure out how to rate the sensor depending on the requirements of a particular shooting situation...

as I said my biggest concern was not even the sensor... it was the weight and form factor of the Epic camera... I like it and I´m sure a lot of other operators will agree...

Ok... I'm going to the 4:00 to 7:00 session today. I'm going to try to see if I can stream via my iPhone to my qik.com account. I've never used it before, so bear with with as I attempt to do this. I dont know what the wifi situation will be like, nor do I know what the 3G coverage will be like. I imagine the building wasn't built with cellular connectivity in mind...

If you guys want to try to watch, go to http://qik.com/bgedney

Keep em coming, Billy!

Did the Epics power up at all?

Any word on when Tattoo starts?

My flight was cancelled due to the weather in NY so I couldn't make it.

So, was there any Scarlet news?

Some stills.

Roberto,

Is that adjustable arm, that the LCD is sitting atop in picture 4, Red's solution for mounting a Bomb EVF or LCD at a variety of heights and distances?
