Just received my online delivery of American Cinematographer for February. Lo and behold the cover mentioned an article 'Assessing the Red One Camera'. What followed was an article by technical editor Christopher Probst (whose name I was unable to find in the Reduser username search) that amounts to little more than a laundry list of obsolete complaints about RED One issues that for the most part have been addressed some time ago.

I'm sure it's no surprise to most to see AC denigrating a camera system that hasn't thrown any advertising dollars their way - but it's still disappointing. Considering RED's impact on the industry thus far, for it to be treated in such an off-hand manner by what is arguably the magazine of note (for now) seems pretty narrow-minded.

I'm not a fanboy - but I own two REDs, RPPs, two RED Rocket™ cards, and almost every item on the RED store (including the t-shirts :-). I'm about to turn 30 and my boutique production company has been completely transformed by RED. I'll be standing in line with bells on for a Tattoo Epic as soon as they'll give me one.

I've tried to avoid brown-nosing, fanboyism and sycophantic behaviour in general till now, but this article struck a raw nerve for some reason. So to all the crusty, entrenched, spooled-up, pinhole-visioned dinosaurs out there with your gigantic onboard VTRs, your tethered record trucks and your mates at the post house with the 7-figure investment in tape decks....

...kiss my white pimply heyhoo.

I gotta say. . . as rants go, this one was pretty special.

Guten Morgen, Herr Graetz!!!

Hast du gut geschlafen? ...

hey sanjin,
while my native german heritage dates back about 5 generations, I can report that last night's sleep was lacking in both quality and quantity - which explains the rant and my inability to find previous threads on the subject. Good points from Graeme and the author, Christopher.
Something triggered that RED Defense Mechanism most of us are now ingrained with, and I unleashed. Having said that, I can see why so many people unload on this forum - it's kind of cathartic :)

back to the cave....

Dan you made my day, thanks for the post.

Dan,

Very clever rant and the heyhoo metaphor does conjur up some disturbing images. I think you may as well get use to AC coming down on virtually anything that does not use film. They have a history of this. I personally think it is fear of the unknown.

Best, Peter

It would be great if District 9 won an oscar and he did an acceptance speech with a copy of this mag in one hand and the statue in the other. I heard it was one of the 10 movies nominated this year.

and don't forget Peter Jackson: "First, I'd like to thank Jim Jannard at RED..."

OK, tell me this: if your normal AC was sick and you had to get an film AC to work on your RED project *tomorrow* who had never worked on RED before, never read REDUSER, and you didn't have time to run him through everything...

Would you be happier if he had:
1. just read the RED manual
2. spent all night on REDUSER trying to find info the day before the job
3. read the RED manual, then Christopher's article, then a bit of REDUSER

?

To me he just gives a fair amount of warnings that I have repeated many times to people shooting RED for the first time.

To say the problems he mentioned are "obsolete" is incorrect - it implies they aren't there. The issues still exist - we have just found workarounds. He is just being helpful and listing the gotchas and their current workarounds. He makes mistakes, but not too many.

Christopher Probst has shot a lot of RED stuff. Just because you can't find his REDUSER username doesn't mean he doesn't exist.

I knew I let my AC subscription lapse for a reason... Actually it's because the mag is just the same old stuff over, and over and over again and more than half full of ads and the rest is mostly paid sponsor articles, blah, blah.

I haven't checked out the RED article yet. Funny, I almost renewed my sub for this issue, but figured I'd pick up the individual copy. Anyway, I'm curious and will have to check it out.

I thought the article was rather shitty - "101 reasons not to shoot Red", yet the guy shoots Red a lot - whatever.

What people take issue at is the one-sidedness of his comments; especially when he argues that the R1 uses a Bayer pattern as a negative, without saying that other digital cameras use the same sensor.

Just because you can't find his REDUSER username doesn't mean he doesn't exist.

:)

Allen, with due respect to Christopher who had and is going to shoot some very impressive images with RED and definitely with RED M-X and EPIC, the article, which our Third Man Sanjin had posted earlier on (I always wonder where on earth he has so much time digging into information that put a lot of paparazzi to shame), is in my mind seems to be "politically" written for AC only. For someone who has not work with RED, it like a do it at your own perils kind of message.

Christopher has acknowledged Graeme rebuttals and is expecting flame or stones to be thrown his way.

Maybe his "subtext" is if you want to shoot really good images with RED, come to me.
