I'm working on an article that covers cameras roughly $10,000 and lower. The 2/3" Scarlet with the fixed lens falls into that category, but what about the next level up, the 2/3" Scarlet with a separate lens? With a small zoom and whatever basic modules and LCD or viewfinder needed minimum, would the costs come under $10,000?

When I put together my Scarlet package, the cost added up to around $7000 for a basic shooter package. The body is around $3000 so another $7000 for accessories is plenty so the 2/3" will certainly fit into your article.

2/3" body
5" LCD
Redmote
Side CF module
Scarlet Adapter
I/O module
Battery module
Side handle

Total: $9,650

That is pretty much everything that you are going to need in a camera package if you decide to rent lenses.

Of course, there's no lens in that package. I wonder what the cheapest zoom lens that will be available for that camera?

Are you considering new lenses only? Or are used ones acceptable for your under 10k limit? Perhaps the Cinema model with a set of mini-primes?
Something like a used Cooke 9-50mm from a reputable dealer runs around 3k-5k. Stretching the limit perhaps for a practical field package. Lesser Angenieux zooms would start around $800 or so in good serviced condition from a dealer like Whitehouse AV. A new low end ENG grade B4 zoom starts around 7k plus mount, so would push the camera out of your range.

Here is a sample package similar to what I will take for starters:
Scarlet Cinema body 2750
Side handle for battery power and control: 950
Small LCD: 900
Side CF module: 500
PL mount:500
Misc. accessories: 2000
Used Cooke 9-50mm T2.5 and Angenieux 12-240 serviced w/ PL mount adapters: 3000

Total: 10,600

I would venture to say that with a $10K budget the Cinema is COMPLETELY obtainable. Now these prices could change if RED decided to REALLY bless us by creating a base shooting package, which included all the essentials, i.e.: the 2/3 Fixed kit. That could save us anywhere from ~$700-1000. but we won't know specifically until we come closer to release date. But until then...

Here is my rendition:

Scarlet Body: $2750
2.8" LCD: $900
Redmote: $550
Side CF Module: $500
Battery Module: $1250

Mini Primes x3: $2850
(8mm,16mm,25mm)

Storage:
16GB CF cards x 4(pack) $1200

how about this ;-)

fixed lens (with kit) - $4750
2/3" interchangeable brain - $2750
16gb card - $500
c-mount adapter - $500 *
c-mount lens/lenses - $1500

* c-mount might even be standard on the brain... I can't remember now.... if so, that's $500 more for card, tripod, mic or whatever.

Believe it or not I've tossed around this idea MANY-A-Times. If you get the cinema w/the Fixed, you save MASSIVELY on the pieces comprising a useable Scarlet. So then you'd only need to add lenses, as well as storage but you'd have 2 working bodies, you also get the benefits of using the Fixed i.e. pull focusing via lens, etc. I don't know maybe.

yep, it's a consideration for me too (if no news about the s35 comes out).

After 1-2 jobs... you could probably afford to kit out the brain with new modules and have 2 working cameras.

I know and thats a rREALLY feasible option, considering you actually save a BUNCH of cash. but honestly I REALLY hope RED decided to offer a package deal for a "Shooting kit" because i'd rather spend that extra $2K that i'd save on getting an entire kit of the Mini-Primes than having to decided between only getting x2 and adding a Fixed.

But if I'm only able to save on the bits of kit by going with the Fixed then so be it. i mean having 2 working rigs isn't bad at all. it's actually a huge opportunity. Considering how many doors can be open just simply by having a choice between the two.

I think a package deal for the interchanagble would be great.. particularly if you got to choose which mini-prime you wanted included in the package..

I highly doubt the lenses would be included in that Interchangeable package. but what I'm particularly interested in the package is The Redmote, LCD, Storage (side cf/read dual cf modules), Battery w/charger etc. Those types of pieces. Also a package deal of this type would be Exceptional considering anyone who purchases either a Scarlet or Epic will need these essential components, so it makes great sense to offer them as a bundle deal. that way once you choose your Body then you add the package with it, and your good to go, and ready to shoot. Plus you save a couple of bucks and that is the best result out of it all.

Of course then you'd need to add lenses later but thats something to decide on individually.

2/3 Interchangeable 2750
2/3 Fixed 4750
miniprimes 4750

total 12250

This would give you a bare minimum package with lots of shooting possibilites.

If you only bought 3 mini primes it would be. $10350

These don't include CF card storage. Probably it would add another thousand.

I know I'm going to buy a Fixed. I haven't decided the rest yet. Even though the Scarlet S35 brain is about 5000 more than the Interchangeable it seems like there are alot more lenses possibilites. And going with Still lenses and a S35 might be almost as ecomonical to start.

I'm pretty sure (speculating) they're going to be offering a package price for the 2/3" cinema, but I would guess we won't see any info until it's really close to shipping just because then they will have a better idea of what it actually costs and what price they can do. Right now it almost doesn't make sense because the price for the 2/3" fixed kit is radically cheaper than building the same kit for the 2/3" cinema.

i'm not so sure.... the initial scarlet was a cheap, out of the box solution and the fixed lens deal is catering to that crowd and mindset.... alot of people then called for a pick and choose solution, which we now have in the 2/3" interchangeble and up.... but I think that has to come at a premium. The brain is ridiculously cheap, so to get a bundle deal is perhaps pushing it.

We can hope though!

An s35 kit, ready to go, with the new 18-50mm please - $15k

I completely dissagree. So what your saying is that because red gives us options for a modular we have to pay an extra price for that modularity. To me imho that makes little sense from a business standpoint.

RED of course has to turn a prodit, I mean after all they are a business. But if your implying that their business model is to charge premiums as the customer goes up in purchasing options, I just don't see it.

If RED deduces that they are able to turn a profit on the 2/3rd Fixed package at its price point which of course includes all the essentials required to shoot, which mind you all other Models will also require to do the same then why would they charge MORE $ just because you want options?

To me it would make a TON of business sense to offer EVERYONE the oppurtunity, whether Fixed do. I mean we ALL need those modules, so why not setup a basic shooting package, that we ALL can save, and not just those who choose the less exspensive package.
