Jim mentioned,

"For long takes use RED Ram or 16GB-64GB CF cards only."

now I am excited,

but I have a question. Do you have to "format" the cards for a certain resolution. Like If I am shooting 3k 24fps and then want to switch to 3k 120fps, am I going to have to dump the data from the card and reformat it.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that you need to format the media for w/e frame rate you want.

It would be a real pain to have to switch, but maybe I'm wrong

Yeah I am excited too for a 64GB card...that would be great.
On the RED Drive (640GB) I have been shooting and changing my resolution from 4K16:9 to 2K16:9 to 3K, and it works well, I will try with my 16GB card and see if it works as well.
:hurray::hurray:But, again, a 64GB card would be really great to have.:hurray:

I seem to recall a placeholder in the Red Store for a 64GB card, though that was about 2 years ago...

Hoping for some information on this soon. I'd like to know what we need to shoot 5K. I'm assuming the current 16GB Cards won't cut it, although with the wizards at Red, you never know.

the future is nigh upon us.

in times like these, I just try to channel Obi Wan's counsel

Not for a certain resolution, only if you change time base! If you change from 25 fps to 24 fps or to 30fps timebase...you have to format the card/drive. Once you choosed your timebase you can change within from 4k to 3k to 2k, Varispeed and different aspect ratios.
64Gb cards would be great!

This would certainly ease the wait for Epic.
Imagine a R1 with M-X sensor, 64GB CF, Bomb EVF and 17-50 RPZ. Nice compact bad-ass setup!

Active Media Products Rolls Out 600X Pro Series CompactFlash Cards

90MB/sec CF Cards Offer Exceptional Performance & Reliability in Capacities up to 64GB

Fremont, California – January 19, 2010 – Active Media Products, manufacturer of SSDs and innovative USB drives, has leveraged their expertise in making ultra fast, small form factor SSDs to produce a new line of 600X CF cards for professional photographers.

"Many pro DSLRs can rapid fire up to 10 frames per second, but after the buffer fills they can only shoot as fast as the memory card can write. The memory card becomes a bottleneck in shooting action sequences. These 600X Pro Series cards can write up to 90MB per second, so even in raw mode a high end DSLR will be able to shoot at or near its rated speed for sustained periods", explained Active Media Products' VP of Sales, Jerry Thomson. The new Pro Series of CF cards support 0 to 70 C operating temeratures. These cards are rugged and reliable enough to take into the field, and fast enough to keep up with the action. AMP's 600X Pro Series CF cards are available today in capacities from 8GB to 64GB through Amazon.

Part Number Description Street Price
CF8G-600X 8GB 600X Pro Series CompactFlash Card $99.95
CF16G-600X 16GB 600X Pro Series CompactFlash Card $179.95
CF32G-600X 32GB 600X Pro Series CompactFlash Card $229.95
CF64G-600X 64GB 600X Pro Series CompactFlash Card $299.95

Agreed...
Don't forget... MBP + RED Rocket, Redcine-X and Tangent Wave

Only in 2k.

That's exactly why we are excited at the prospect of fitting 30 minutes of 4k on a CF card.
Thanks Martin
I guess the happiness is based on the assumption that one day we will be able to work in 4K on 32Gb and 64GB CF cards.
But does the Red CF module work with 32GB and 64GB?

I just read this as post of Jim's...I dont know of any other CF cards that RED approves of in this territory so sounds like an annoucement coming soon.

Nothing in the Red Store yet. 64GB is going to be very useful, though I don't know how comfy folks will be on set without swapping out with the usual 16GB of media to offload (4x the media to be recorded over 16GB). Of course certified Red cards should mean they pass the sniff test.

Certainly more comfy than I would be shooting 64 GB onto a RED Drive!
