it's not a bomb....

I agree about the issue about calling the EVF "Bomb". I'm very surprised that you would call it that. Anyone who has dealt with airlines and border stuff... ugg! Not trying to be a smart ass either. I love Red, but that is a bad idea. A year or two ago a French man was arrested for saying "explode' on a US plane. He was having a hard time getting his bag into the overhead compartment. A steward tried to help him and he said don't push too hard or the bag will explode. His translation was bad, as he meant that the seams would come apart. He was taken off the plane and charged with uttering a "threat". He lost in court.

And who can forget the guy wearing the transformer t-shirt with a picture of one of the transformers arms as a gun. They made him change his shirt before he was allowed on the plane.

As a Canadian, crossing the border, or flying on US airlines causes me great stress. I know Jerrod is a fellow Cannuk, but calling it "bomb" is not a great idea. (plus I don't get the entendre...what's the connection to bomb?)

I am only going to be able to afford one so I am going with interchangeable. All I can think about is that angi 12-240mm on a cliff filming surfing.

Also, I am done with electronic lenses. I am going all manual as soon as possible for as long as possible

I like the simplicity and feel of a good manual lens too. Makes for a more deliberate and thoughtful approach to your shots I think. I plan to use the 12-240 for nature photography mostly.

It all looks great, Jarred! Looking forward to the day I can own one.

Would the 2/3 Scarlet with Mini Primes (or even fixed lens for that matter) have depth of field similar to 35mm with larger lenses, or will it be more along the lines of what conventional video cameras with similar sized sensors are capable of?

Because of the shorter focal lengths used on a 2/3" camera to match the field of view on a Super-35 camera, a 2.5X magnification factor, you have an effective increase of depth of field on a 2/3" camera as if you stopped-down by 2.5-stops compared to Super-35. In other words, shooting at f/2.8 on a 2/3" camera, once you match field of view, looks like an f/5.6-8.0 split on a Super-35 camera.

So how shallow you can make the depth of field on a 2/3" camera, just as with any camera, will be controlled by how wide-open your lens aperture goes. Let's just say that an f/1.5-stop on the Mini Prime is close to an f/1.4-2.0 split. Therefore that would look like shooting at f/4.0 on a Super-35 camera.

The Scarlet fixed 8X will in particular be judged against cameras like the 5D mark II when it comes to this sort of form-factor debate.

Obviously the FF35 Scarlet or the S35 scarlet... with a bunch of modules attached... will be a different situation calling for proper shoulder mount or handle mount or tripod or whatever you like...

but there's a large part of the smaller scarlet's market who are going to want to fling this thing around like a pimped up DSLR and I sincerely hope it can do that without feeling and looking too awkward.[/QUOTE]

I might get flamed for this, but you really shouldn't be handholding a motion camera without some sort of longitudinal suport system if you are expecting any sort of steadiness in your images. The Scarlets look like they have a high center of gravity, but you're going to want a top handle/side handle/ shoulder mount or some other kind of support to shoot video. Anyone who is using a 7D or 5DII now should know this - the film plane to center of balance ratio is weird on such a short (front to back) camera so handholding for video is not really an option (at least in my opinion).:coolgleamA:

Jarred,

Can you please remove the "BOMB" from the side of the EVF. I don't want to even deal with the airports with something labeled "Bomb" on the side of it. AIRPORTS and the word "BOMB" don't mix. Sorry but it will certainly drive a lot of people nuts.

Guess I forgot to refresh my browser! I have to agree, it seems like an interesting choice in naming.

Anyone know the diameter of the Scarlet fixed lens, is it 82mm?

Anyone know the diameter of the Scarlet fixed lens, is it 82mm?

Just curious.

yes.. you can use tele/wide extenders on the fixed if you choose. It has a standard 77mm threaded ring on the front to allow.

If that still makes you feel restricted, that is why we also offer the Interchangeable lens version of the 2/3rds Scarlet.

check it out

Sad news. Now Scarlet fixed-lens is completely unaffordable for me! Nice idea to increase the cost by over 25% in this crap economy. Oh well, now I can safely move on without having to wonder if I might be able to afford one. Don't get me wrong, it's a brilliant camera, it's just not one I (and thousands of others) will be able to afford. Looks like students and low budget filmmakers (NOT PROS) will carry on Red-free. If you're a professional filmmaker (i.e. you make money with your films) you need not reply. I'm addressing those of us without deep pockets to afford such gear. Sad times indeed. Perhaps some day Jim will get back to that camera for the 'soccer moms' (i.e 'the rest of us').

I work a bit in Stock footage and stills, and the soccer moms are killing the stock stills industry with all the stuff they shoot on their Canon Rebels from Costco stuffed into Istockphoto and other micro sites. Frankly, I hope the Soccer moms can't afford it. They certainly won't be able to use it as well as the rest of us. A little exclusivity is a nice thing now days. For all that Scarlet delivers it is dirt cheap. Nothing in the 2/3" world will look better, not even $100K Sonys.

Well, I applaud the people at Red, I just love the current Scarlet offers.
I'm really interested in hearing more about the touch focus lcds.

I just hope that the Dollar/Euro rate will stay the same (or evolve in an even better rate for the Euro :smile5: ) cause at the current rate Fixed Scarlet package is a small bit more than 3000 euro. Which still means I'll be able to buy two Scarlets.

Thank you Red, you just made my day :smile5:

Great work team RED ... but what's the focal length range and maximum aperture for the fixed ? ? ?
Looked everywhere ... or are these specs still a secret?

I am gonna GUESS! 12-100mm T3.... O.K. maybe 10-80mm T3

A 25 percent increase made it beyond reach? I cant afford one even at the 3750 price... so thats why I am making it a distant goal. I'm a beginning event videographer shooting on 11 year old Canon Xl1's. I have to work fulltime besides the business... But if I were able to afford the Scarlet at the pre-raised price, then an extra grand would mean charging an extra 50 to 75 bucks per job between now and summer 010. Seriously, dude, you obviously don't want the camera that bad if it went from affordable to unaffordable.

Now me, I need 5 grand. 5 grand i can't afford.

RED team, you made my day, too!

It's so tough deciding between fixed or interchangable....

Thanks!

just sell your blood twice a week for 25 bucks a pint. thats 200 a month

in 25 months youll have the 5 grand

oh and I'm not even kidding, its good money, and it supports a good cause.

I would do it but the time it takes to drive to the center give blood and come back I would be averaging less than 10 bucks an hour which makes it more worth it to me to just go to my shit job 6 hours more per week

The Kit should forever be known as "The Soccer Mom Special".
And I can't wait to get mine.
