Hi,

First of all I should say I've only had experience transcoding to Prores and DNXHD a few times with Rocketcine/RedAlert...with no issues.

I have a client that has an older (non-Intel) Avid system that needs the .R3Ds converted to .MXF files (DNXHD MXF wrapped movs). It doesn't sound like any of the Red software does .MXF without an additional step (?)

Any suggestions what's the best workflow for this? I've seen that Metafuze can do this but I'm helping them out of a jam and don't have VMWare to emultate pc/windows on my tower).

Looking for the quickest way to do this? I'm sure this will come up again, but wanted to check what the best single or 2 step process would be.

Other than the editor upgrading their Avid:-)

Thanks for any suggestions. Appreciate it.

We're pretty close to releasing MXF output for rocket. (zero import time into avid mc)
Should be next week for sure (waiting on firmware and other changes
to get wrapped up)

yes, yes, yes... happy man, MXF what I have been waiting for in AVID country Sweden. This will make such a change...

The additional step is needed if you are going to go on a older MAC

Anyway transcode to DnXhd quicktime movies then import into the AVID via an ALE. If the settings are the same in the movies as the projects should fast import. Use REC709 in both cases.

Then just move the MXF over to your friends computer. If you do not have an AVID on an intel based machine the Quicktimes should work on an older MAC. Someone correct me if I am wrong

So I've been transcoding to Avid DNx 36 8bit @1080 23.98 and it's taken 3 hrs to transcode 150Gb of R3Ds.
I was hoping for it to be alittle faster with RedRocket.
Does that sound about right?

Hard to say without knowing how much time/format the source footage is.

Also, that's going through the Quicktime system which adds overhead.
The new MXF/DNx output will be direct and should be much faster
once it's ready.

Thanks Deanan. Good to know!
All footage was shot 4K 16:9 not sure if MAX was on/off.
FYI Just took 2 hrs to transcode 67GB of 4K 16:9 23.98 to DNX 36 8bit 1080 23.98
Obviously Prores is much much faster.
Looking forward to the next version of RocketCine X then...
Cheers,

this about right, keep in mind that on RED-Rocket you can only export in full de-bayering. I assume what you are exporting is half or quarter half

Brilliant!

You just got at least one new sale!

Few questions:

1) Will your ability to write to a MXF wrapped DNxHD file extend to applications that use your SDK?

2) Will you be able to write to 1:1 10bit avid files?

thanks again...

Interesting to note that in Noah Kadner's new Red Book, the chapter on Avid is PC only. The Red Rocket card cranking out .MXF's is a game changer for Avid workflow on a Mac.

Is this option available yet? It's been a several weeks since this comment was made.

Thanks, Keith Collea

Can't release it yet because of a minor logistical hurdle to do with installation conflicts.
Very soon though.

Can't wait!

I can get RT to DPX but when I choose a DNxHD quicktime it ends up worse than 2:1 (which is still ok'ish)

I'm 'assuming' there will be improvements here as writing a quicktime wrapper and doing a DNxHD codec encode are easy compared to the wavelett decode and debayer?

thanks

Is there a way to get an ALE along with the Avid DNXHD files that I'm currently able to export from Red RocketCine X?

Is there any reason that I should not want to use the DNX-HD files that RED Rocket™Cine X can export at this time?

We are working out some last issues with the AMT/SDK and it should be ready fairly soon. It will geneate an ALE as well so the workflow is to put all the MXF files into the MediaFile folder first, import ALE and do a relink. Media now in your bin with all the lovely metadata you have come to expect.

Could use more slots in that Mac though... not much I can do when I have an MC on Unity with DX hardware attached.
