Here it is: Canon 7D vs. RED ONE - a real footage comparison.

For the comparison I took a short part from Philip Bloom "Dublin's People" or how I call it "Dubliners" just referring to a famous novel by James Joyce...

and added short part from my RED ONE lens test with Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 @ wide open f/1.2, available light, 320 ISO, plus a bit of saturation...

But go back to the comparison...and a winner is... RED ONE !!!

Huraaaay....!!!

Bye bye Canon, game over !...

of course red is going to win, all hell would break loose if it was the other way around, the big story here is that you are comparing two cameras that are world's apart in terms of price but somehow are still in comparason :)

I dont think that anyone really claims that the 7D can even compare to the Red one, to be honest though- I could afford a 7D, but I can not afford a red one- and thats the issue, until Scarlet actually comes out, were people like you and me can go to Calumet Photo or B&H or some other vendor to pick up a scarlet, we are going to go to the alternatives - the 7D is good enough at the price point

you're kidding, right? this has to be your most hackneyed "test" to date - you cropped and upsampled Phil's work from Vimeo...and completely distorted it in this utterly nonsensical comparison. the color space is screwed, the resolution is screwed. what you're posting as a "comparison" looks nothing like the original.

unbelievable.

RED is a great camera that can stand on its own merits without this sort of gross misrepresentation. the community deserves better.

I have to agree with Meryem.

And I'm stoked about the Scarlet and have no intention of shooting footage on a Canon but Bloom's footage looks GOOD.

Not because the 7D is comparable to a Red but because Bloom knows how to shoot within the limitations of his equipment. Like all indie shooters should learn to do.

well that's out of comparison too.. you can't compare a $1700 camera to a $3750 (the cheapest scarlet) camera.. that's more than double price.. and when you compare them at the stills side.. 7D will rule out the competition.. its an APS-C sized with 18Mpixels .. 3K is some how under 5Mpixels..

REVIEW: I noticed from the footage posted up that the canon footage is running at half the frame rate.. single frame duplicated on two frames...

Does anyone else see the 7d footage and think it doesn't look that good.
It looks choppy to me. 24p on an hvx has a better quality to me...
Don't get me wrong, the resolution is great the color looks very nice on at least one of the samples I've seen, but it seems like its missing something in the smoothness department.

I think in some way you can compare them because you are buying it to capture video. Price is not to be concerned with. Is the video acceptable? From what Ive seen it's not. It looks like it was filmed with a point and shoot. Aside from the Depth of field differences that is.

you can compare a 1700 camera with a 3700 camera more so then a 1700 camera and a 30k camera- so yeah, I think I can make that comparison- and if we are going to get in to the megapixels of it all, I would still rather have a 3K camera that can shoot a five megapixel camera then an 18 megapixel camera that can shoot 1080p h.264 video- or did I miss something, is this not a digital cinema forum?

I'm in agreement with Ryan...I'd much rather a camera that can actually shoot video whilst having good stills rather then a camera that comes out with 1080p h.264...

On the other hand...why is anyone talking about scarlet when its not even out? God knows if specs have changed since we last saw them...maybe they have maybe they havent...price...maybe it has maybe it hasnt...going on current stuff...you could only battle out specs and price...

Stills u could with some of the test stuff...but its probably not best to do that until its from the actual scarlet itself...

EDIT:

By the way...if your doing stills why not get a stills camera and if your doing video/cinema why not get a camera for that? Expensive but they are built for the task at hand...
They are built for two different scenarios (although eventually they could be one and the same at the low price point)...

Each job can use a different tool...simple...

I think Red's fearless leader posted something to the opposite effect just today in Recon.

DMSC. The target is quite clearly both.

The part is from Bloom's Canon7D 1080p original footage and is not a hack, it's more about to compare a quality of the two cameras.

If you feel "disturbed" with that just do your own comparison.

Well I know DMSC is to combine the two seamlessly...which will work when it comes to the S35 and upwards if people want to really care about pixels...

Otherwise I think they'll do a great job from the bottom to the top of combining the two...but that can't be made a factual statement until they are actually in some peoples hands...don't mean everyone but just a few testers to actually say they do the job right..

Ho Hum!! Here we go again. Unless you shoot a side by side comparison of like for like with same subject same lighting same lens and aperture its all pretty pointless unless you are out to prove.........What?
Whole exercise is pointless and a waste of all our time.
We ALL know RED is a success and dont need this type of comparison clogging the computers.

Philip can make almost any camera look good. It is more the skill behind the camera than the camera itself. Comparing a DSLR that shoots video to a dedicated Digital Cinema Camera is just an exercise. Each has it's place. I would not rush out to buy anything right now. OTH - if you already own a bunch of Canon glass then buying a D7 is not a big deal.
But if you are just starting out I don't think I would stake a whole career on rushing to buy a D7 and not waiting to see what the next round of RED cameras looks like....
At least now you would not spend $35,000 and be stuck with payments for the next 5 years - like we did in the BetaCamSP days.
