  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New CF cards coming soon?

yup.. that is basically the SSD module for the Epic/Scarlet. Once we get all the kinks out of it, we can explore development of a RED ONE module that uses the same "RED-MAG".

doesn't matter.. I unfortunately speak from experience. Heck, just look at beta camera builds. We tell and warn and scream up and down for people not to use them on production... and of course, people do, then they yell at us when something goes wrong.

Then they call us and we say:

" well mr. smith, you are not supposed to use a beta build on a production "

which of course is just fuel to the fire, and we get sworn at even more, the next sentance is usually:

" the producer will call you in a minute "

.. at which point all is lost.. the producer doesn't give a shit what a beta camera build is all he knows is the RED camera ruined his production.

And that's just camera builds.. Media is a far bigger evil. You can get corruption without knowing it on bad or slow cards. Really strange things can happen... and its not a firmware fix away to make everything better. We just don't mess around with media.. A few people really appreciate that.. but many as you can see do not unfortunately.
 
Aha, I knew you guys were gonna be all over SSD mags... Nice work, very much looking forward to the end of spinning-disk aquisition...

Good news about the 32GB CF cards. Hope you guys one day will be the first for beating 133MB/s limit(886x) or first for CFast.

Exactly! A producer friend of mine got his movie shot on a couple of Reds that were rented for his feature and he was talking to me about how the red failed a couple of times on the "said" great new firmware released the day before. That's when I let him know he had the idiots who installed the BETA firmware the day before when directed not to by RED.

I gotta say, Jarred. As much as I hate not having larger (and cheaper) CF cards - your firm opinion on this matter just calms me down. Thanks for looking out for (even the dumb of) us :)
 
$500 for 32GB and $200 for 16GB sounds like a nice price range. I would buy...

Just seems that the owner/user should have some way to make their own choice.

And I know where you and RED are coming from as well, but I'm an adult and a professional, as are most that use the RED on a regular basis, and feel that I should not be LOCKED out of making those decisions because someone less professional MIGHT point fingers in the directions. (Which BTW in my experience, improper finger pointing can happen with people that have no professional sensibility/integrity - no matter what you do)

I have griped a little bit about the closed nature of the REDONE (that is, all of the dozen or so other $17K+ professional cameras I have ever owned I was not only provided manuals and allowed to open up for servicing/cleaning/minor mods, etc but it was DESIGNED to be somewhat technician friendly) but I at least understood it because those were things that could potentially damage the camera.

But this involves external media that would only (potentially) damage my footage and I believe I can and should be able to evaluate how difficult it might be to reshoot and therefore what chances to take. (Anybody ever use short end film stock?) When I stuck a high grade VHS tape in my Panasonic RECAM back in 1986 on a tiny island in the Philippines (access was by small plane/gravel strip/oxcart to the beach/outrigger banka to the island) I knew there was a small chance of problems over using the OFFICIAL M-format tape - but it was either that or record over other footage. It was MY decision and I would have lived with whatever problems that decision created.

With that said, please be aware that I say all of this with REDLOVE and understanding. And I would be very excited to see a RED 32gig card at any reasonable cost - soon please!:biggrin:

I can understand your perspective Michael on the cards, but the closed nature of the REDONE is something I really don't understand, maybe i am just reading you wrong.

The RED ONE, at least to me is a pretty "open" camera.. we made it that way by design. You can use PL mounts, PV mounts, Birger Canon mounts, Nikon mounts, etc. That means we sell less RED lenses, but so be it, it's the right thing to do.

Same with the CF cards.. we dont lock out other CF cards, we just lock them out at high recording speeds, when most other card's fail.

We even worked with Anton Bauer to get them to make AB plates for power for the RED ONE, so people could power the camera with their existing AB batteries. We could of easily locked that out.. and sold more RED Batteries, but that would be the wrong thing to do..

We run this company as customers, and make most decisions based on what we would want as a customer.

Service manuals and people opening up the cameras to fix themselves is something we don't encourage because the RED is significantly more complicated than other cameras out there.. and we learned early on even people that say they are technically competent to fix things found it very easy to turn their RED ONE into $18,000 bricks... and then bitched at us when it cost $5000 to fix.

This was a great decision from RED. Having the warranty void if something happens when using AB plates was not such a great decision, though. Quite the contrary...
 
Well on the topic of the cards, I don't think RED is literally going to stop you and say DON'T USE THAT CARD OR WE'LL...(Insert action)
As what you do in your own home/studio/set is up to you, what they don't want is you coming back later after this lengthy discussion of CF Cards and their testings etc. and saying "It's your fault that you didn't make this camera to suit my CF card and has now ruined my shoot" or whatever...
RED's got to protect themselves but they can't obviously police you around,

On the topic of the new CF Cards, is this going to be pretty much the same sort of thing as the way you guys did the 320 to 640 change? As in if you order the 16GB now it'll change to the 34GB if at shipping time its ready?

But fitting... This particular horse fell over a while ago and we keep beating the snot out of it.

And yes, I want my sub-$200 16GB cards just as much as the next guy.
