  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New CF cards coming soon?

Oh, and 32gb sounds awesome :-)
 
Will the existing, recently upgraded card modules work with 32gb cards? Or will these need to be upgraded as well? Or is that a "don't know yet?"
 
Hi Jim and Jarred!

Could you try the Transcend 16GB x600 CF cards for the Red One? This seems to be a great card at a very good price. They claim above 80mbyte per second, shouldn´t that work? Would love to be able to buy these card for my own use. Also, could you add a menuoption in camera to turn off speedcheck?

I'm looking forward to the 32GB Cards- that will be great!

Especially for some documentary work I am doing - there is nothing quite like trying to change out cards during an interview - although I have developed a new skill: Sensing when there will be a long pause to swap cards. (Is that something I can put on a resume? ;) )

More affordable 16GB card options would also be helpful- that Transcend seems promising. To bad it is locked out ...

$500-ish for a 16GB card is a bit spendy for me, but I'd pay that for a 32GB Card as long as it still has the benefits of the shooting speed of the 16GB card.

Keep in mind that 32GB Cards will also be usable for 5K, 6K, 9K, etc... and with larger res, comes larger files. By RED charging ahead in this area now, we will all benefit down the road when these other formats become available.

Dont worry Shawn, just because nobody is talking about them we are testing everything out there. As for sub $200 cards, as soon as we find a card that cheap that actually works, we will pass it forward.

Red One is not locked to proprietary CF.. We just lock out the high data rates where data integrity comes questionable... It is very easy to say " just put a warning on the screen " but unfortunately it doesn't work that way in the real world.. if a big budget production's data becomes corrupt, people forget the fact they used janky cards, and are quick to blame the camera. We don't want to even allow people to be put in those kinda situations.
 
As much as 16GB is plenty for us at the moment, I wouldnt mind the option of carrying so much more possible recording time in a CF belt pouch. 32s would bring me closer to not needing the drives or RAMs so often.

That's a hard decision but a very sensible one I must say. Make it foolproof somehow ;) How much footage may fit on a 32GB card with a ScarletFF35?

Aha! Which cards have given you pleasant surprises? How about a place, on Reduser maybe, were you could publish the results of your tests, all results. So we know which ones work, all the time, some times, or never.

but the warning could have a "click here to accept that use of this card may cause data corruption." and record a flag in the metadata. Maybe 2 tiered override where you have a mode in the setup menus that says "Allow use of potentially janky cards" plus the click here override for each card.

Just seems that the owner/user should have some way to make their own choice.

I know where you're coming from on this... However, it doesn't matter if it's just a simple warning or if it's redundant warnings with a funky key combination to allow use of the card. At the end of the day, when things go wrong, people still point fingers.

What confuses me is the number of people who are just assuming that there's cards out there that will work properly. And that by putting a simple warning on the camera, it will enable them to record at 4K to these cards. Or perhaps people are thinking that if the camera was unlocked that they could try out all these new cards on their own. Maybe that's the case, I don't know...

It also confuses the whole situation when various manufacturers keep announcing new CF products that look like they may work. And yet many of these announced cards are still not available for purchase, yet people keep talking about them on the forums, wondering if they'll work.

we have NDA's with most of the manufactures to get engineering samples early.. so can't name names. The 16gb cards we had to get custom made because nobody would step up to the plate.. we were about a year ahead of everyone in sustained speed requirements ( hence the cost ) Good thing though is that everyone will catch up by themselves eventually... it is the benefit of using a consumer format. The downside of that is people expect consumer prices.. which won't happen as we always ride the bleeding edge.

If you look at the P2 card for example though you guys are still in good shape.. as a 32GB card costs $1600 and a 16GB card costs $900.

If there is one thing I can guarantee.. is that when our 32GB card comes out, its not going to cost you $1600. :)

And then there are these SDXC cards that are starting to pop-up, they look like they have the ability to hit some pretty high speeds and capacities, although SD cards seem to be alot less durable and much easier to loose :(
 
Maybe you could make a SATA interface for raw SSD disks instead :-)

That's what it is ( SATA ).. cant use RAW SSD disks though, the insertion rate on the contacts fail after 500 times.

Thanks for the update Jarred, I appreciate it. I'll remain optimistic that $200 16gb and $500 32gb cards are soon. Meanwhile I'll keep my 10 8gb cards working hard!
