I'm a music producer/artist and just did a search the other day looking for the best video camera to make videos with for myself and other artist as needed.

I was looking around the $3,000 (3K) price range and saw the Red Scarlet 3K.

Now, I have produced TV commercials and such, but was always directing and never owned the gear. I know it's not like "Pro" stuff (like making a motion picture and all) but it would be great to get the BEST for the price and start at least doing something half way decent for Youtube etc.

So what's your take? Is the Red Scarlet 3K the way to go or is there something else?

I'll be editing on the PC. Not sure what program to use (Vegas 9 perhaps?)
Any direction you guys could point to would be awesome!

Thanks,
Jamie

Um it's not out yet so your question is a bit premature. But I'd guess it will be worthwhile to purchase given RED's track record and the fact that there's nothing else even close in its class/price range.

Thanks Noah!

When is it supposed to be released?

SEA... 1st off, we need you to change to your real name. Sorry, and welcome.

Jim

Jim, this could be alleviated easily if you required admin activation of user accounts. You could catch everyone using aliases before they could post.

Jamie,

If your delivery is primariy youtube, then the Scarlet would be overkill. Who knows maybe after shooting with it for a while, you may decide you want to make a feature film down the road. Either way, Scarlet will be up for the challenge.

For music videos for web distribution, shallow depth of field (selective focus) may be more important than the resolution, manual features, and audio features that Scarlet will provide, so the Canon EOS Rebel T1i may be a better choice. It is $900, and then spend the rest of your money on Canon L lenses. Plus you would also get an awesome still camera out of the deal.

If I had $3,000 and I wanted a sweet rig to shoot some videos with, I would buy a Canon 5D MKII and a sweet lens. Unless of course the Scarlet fixed was out, which it's not so it really can't be considered unless this post is transported into the future.

I don't understand. Jamie IS my real name. SEA is my user name.

I also go by James if that's what you mean.

Thanks,
Jamie (James) SEA

This board goes by a real names username policy only. Though if you're lucky a mod will switch you over and not require a re-register.

Well... I want to do professional quality vids as possible. Perhaps they could make it to cable one day as well as some other media. Also when I perform live, it would be cool to have some vids playing on a large projection screen etc.

BTW - How much this unit will cost?

Thanks

So you are saying my user name "SEA" needs to be switched to James or Jamie right?

My professional name is Jamie Sea (if that helps).

Either way it's all fine with me.

Best,
Jamie

The "Fixed Lens" model with everything you need to start shooting is estimated to be a little under $4,000 when released. Last I heard about a release date was earliest late-summer/fall.

Now, all we need to know is the year. Everything seems to indicate that they won't be releasing any new cameras anytime this year...hope I'm wrong

Yup.

And I beg to differ -- a 3K Scarlet IS a pro camera. If you're not going to call it a professional camera, well then neither is the Sony F900, F950, or frankly any of the competition, which are just 1080p cameras. Sure, resolution isn't everything, but I'd honestly rather shoot with a RED camera of any sort than the competition. So yes, a 3K Scarlet is a pro camera. It's not a consumer camera, lol.
