  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apparently the RED has X-Ray vision...

I was playing with RED's "Infra" camera today [the camera built without an IR cut filter inside] at Keslow Camera. I've spent some time with it on jobs over the past few years, but this was the first time where I really got to just nerd out and see what it could do. While there's not much to say about it beyond normal infrared imagery, there was one particularly bizarre characteristic.

On a side note, the camera's a ton of fun. I've done plenty of IR stills, but IR in motion is a different beast. There's something about seeing white trees blowing in the wind that is very cool.

For those that haven't seen footage from an IR RED, here's a random shot out the door with 10 stops of ND in.

Putting tons of ND in blocks all visible light, leaving only IR light remaining and visible to the camera. As such, sunglasses and tinted car windows are completely translucent. When testing/demonstrating, we noticed something rather unusual...

The lenses are certainly clear, but the frames looked translucent as well... almost iridescent. Those are my Oakley Monster Pup glasses with 3 stop polarized lenses. The frames are matte black plastic - no amount of visible light can shine through the frames.

Upon further investigation...

The frame is completely translucent. That mirrored "USA" text is actually printed on the inside [towards your head] of the frame.

You can see the lenses through the bottom...

...and the text and indentations on the inside of the frame.

I pulled the NDs and shot a little more.

As you can see in this last picture, even the plastic "O" is visible through the frame. And when my hand casts a shadow in the IR light? The glasses go right back to black again.

Fun, eh?

Don't be surprised when some special agents show up to your house. You probably discovered the secret Oakley material that Jim didn't want anyone to know about.

weren't you on a job today?

Nice stuff... :-)

Go shoot some chicks. Mark from Offhollywood has been delivering some nice stills. Send him an x-ray red camera. I'll pay you $8,000.

Just to put it in perspective. They are normal, solid matte black plastic.

And yes, I own black Oakleys with red icons.

scarry, so IR light can pass through black plastic? I wonder how a low cost lens with plastic housing reacts to IR light - maybe IR contaminates all the glass elemints inside?

Oakley needs to get their shit together. How could they not block IR polution with their frames? I want your money back!

:)

Very cool, thanks for sharing.

Hey, at least it proves that the IR sensitivity problem started long before RED was ever started!

;) :) Har har har har har...

Can you shoot some "heat signature" type night shots?

Can the footage be colorized to give completely different looks (like the Predator)?

If you're thinking of the true mid-IR imaging that can see normal body heat, you can't get that from Red or any silicon imager. Mid-IR cameras usually have actively cooled platinum silicide or mercury cadmium telluride detectors.

(super-ugly 10 year old photo of me using a camera that had a cooled PtSi sensor)

I am sure you could get interesting effects with false color, though, maybe with some creative post it could fake that look.

NIce...

Seems like a good material to use for Bikinis!!!!!!!!!!:001_wub:
