  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDCINE-X

This has been said -
but support for blackmagic and Aja card would be great

That we could finally monitor on a proper monitor from RC and without needing RR

That we could finally monitor on a proper monitor from RC and without needing RR

... and you can't do that now because?

Nvidia CX card with REDCINE and a Dreamcolor monitor.

REDCINE supports a true 10-bit output via the DisplayPort connector to the Dreamcolor, and the Dreamcolor is a true 10-bit display.

Put REDCINE in fullscreen mode, make sure the Dreamcolor is calibrated correctly, and you have a 10-bit, color accurate representation of imagery.

can it load more than 75 clips for apps like Crimson? ....

You are not the first person I have heard say this, and it confuses me. I regularly (several times a week) use REDCINE on a few different systems, and regularly load up hundreds (sometimes thousands) of clips without issue.

What kind of system config are you using, and have you tried this on other systems?

If you load up a large group of clips [say, 100 or 200... I haven't figured out the threshold] via "Load All" and then attempt to use "Load All" again, it will not allow you to import more clips.

If you do it all at once, you can import thousands of clips.

Luki-

How and for what purpose do you use Redcine? For simply viewing clips, it can be ok, but for getting some sort of pipeline use out of it, it's worthless. Ever tried a conform in RedCine? There's all sorts of issues. Enough to have caused me not to use RedCine in probably 6 months or so. Many issues are listed here: http://www.crimsonworkflow.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=3&sid=f2a804565267fdb890229c474b4d9409

You and I got in a heated discussion about system specs well over a year ago. I don't care to dive into that again, but this happens on every system that myself, clients and colleagues have used.

What does it cost?

I use REDCINE for viewing, and for rendering and output.

I don't use it for conforming, because it was not designed as, and has never been a real conforming tool. ;)

Hey Brook,

I'm not trying to be the "gee, nothing is wrong" guy - I believe you are having this problem.

But - just as an example - I just loaded a few hundred R3D clips into REDCINE on my laptop, and then loaded them again... and again... using Load All.

It would be great if *I* had the problems and nobody else did, instead of the other way around! : )

Looks fabulous guys!

I've said it before, but I'll say it again : I'm so happy that you're using an RGB slider instead of one of those useless three-wheel things. However, I would really love to see you take it a step further with an incredibly useful Red/Orange/Yellow/Green/Aqua/Blue/Purple/Magenta HSL like Adobe ACR.

yes - but once again that requires a very specific range of equipment. Where as blackmagic and aja hardware is widespread. The dream color setup is always an option, but it would be nice to be able to use existing hardware. Obviously not expecting it to perform the same way but for a reference it would be nice.

R-X is a detour from Assimilate Scratch. There is no question that REDCINE was a modest derivative of Scratch minus a lot of features. Building R-X from scratch (and not from Scratch) gives us a lot more options to control what we can deliver to our customers for free. While we think Scratch is a terrific tool for RED users (and we recommend it), we also believe that our customers want more stability and updates for REDCINE along with more features as we move forward. R-X is the 1st step towards that end.

R-X will always be free. It will be difficult to give (and support) many features that come from true professional applications. That said, we think we can leverage this new foundation to a place that will satisfy more people than the road we were on before. We fully expect R-X to be a platform that can be very useful to many of our customers.

It's great to know that you are taking control of RedCine on your own. How can we contribute? I could start by translating the Manual to Spanish. (I know there will be a Manual this time).

I LOVE YOU GUYS. OK when are you guys going to start selling posters of Graeme and the other resident geniuses? I'm serious.

Building R-X from scratch (and not from Scratch)...

I admit... I chuckled. Well played, Mr. Jannard, well played. I might just be groggy, but I'm sure at least a few other people cracked a smile too.

And back to R-X: thanks for remembering us PC guys. I'm looking forward to seeing how this revamped tool fits into various workflows.

So - what is it intended to do?

So - what is it intended to do?

OK, so I've watched the video and read this thread.

For clarification, Jim/Graeme/Deanan et al, what is the intended market of this product, what are its goals?

Love that the plan is to always have it be free! But beyond that, looking at the video, I see:

Browsing/Viewing of clips, with multiple tabbed bins off on the side

Clip Selection, which implies you can do stuff to/with some and not others
Settings for a project, frame rate, color space, gamma space, frame size, and frame guides similar to RC

(and I like the pop-ups that give file name/type/dimensions/size/mod, but duration and framerate would be good additions)

Then there's the editing section with a drag and drop timeline to insert shots (nice!). I see a histogram with sliders for Exposure/Contrast/Brightness/ISO, Debayer, DRX (dynamic range extension, aka highlight recovery), Denoise and Sharpen, Saturation, R, G & B sliders, and then inputs for some RGB & RAW numbers, with their respective readouts next to them (what would you enter in that text field I wonder?).

I see a Save and Output under Image Control, which hints at the long mentioned round tripping of color settings from camera to software and back.

Individual clip playback insludes timecode and some jump buttons for beginning/end, and perhaps user defined in/out points as well.

Output allows in this mockup options for ProRes, RAW, and Flash Video, size is set to 1920x1080 but has other options, Quality has several settings including best (there are four predefined notches so I'm guessing full/half/quarter/etc. res from debayer).

I realize this is an early sampling of what you intend, but don't forget cropping in there too!

OK, sorry, now for actual questions:

Redcine never quite lived up to the potential of what Might Have Been. I understand the reasons for this.

So what are the goals for this new product? What do you expect folks to be able to do with it?

A list of capabilities would be good to see, including what it does and does not do (such as conform, as mentioned). Are you folks ready to share such a list, or perhaps might not want to for concern of being buried in "but add this feature too!" list bombing?

Will it do the color setting round tripping?

Will it kick out FCP bins/projects/XML/whatever you want to support for that?

Will it kick out ALE or Avid stuff for tools?

Setting up bins is nice. A little basic editing is nice. But if we can't get it into our primary tools, of limited value if we have to redo that work later.

Would love to see it let you set up bins, set some ins and outs, lay out a basic edit, render offline, and send all that work in a meaningful fashion to FCP/Avid (or hey, throw Adobe in there too!). XML/ALE/EDL/etc.

EDIT - OK, just re-read the "no to EDL" comment - I'm HOPING that is no import of EDL for conform, but hoping it'll export...otherwise, what is the point of the bins and the editing timeline if it is stuck in a sandbox?

Will this tool allow you to edit the look and save that look back into the file? I'm guessing that might be the case since saving as RAW is on the list even now of Output choices.

I see a lot of folks treating Redcode RAW in a limiting way - if it were a DSLR, they shot RAW but then immediately convert it to JPEG with the defaults as shot, tweaking nothing, throwing away the extra bit depth and dynamic range and color variability. Or, in video speak, using the FCP importer and then grading from that, calling it a day. Weak. Tosses one of the truly nice benefits of shooting RAW. Like getting a one light of your film to HDCAM and grading from there.

The catch has been that it hasn't been easy/available for most video type folks to get in and twiddle with the knobs in a reliable, efficient way where the workflow is stable/reliable/dependable without using a lot of other tools and acquiring a lot of know-how.

If Redcine-X can do this, more power to you guys - it'll help.

OK, that's more statement than question, but I'm sure you know what I mean - boils down to that what is this product intended to do, who is it intended for, and how far/deep will it take those steps that it DOES do, and what does it not intend to do?

It has been stated that it'll have limited functionality and grow over time. Great! We know picking timetables is tough, but a list of suggested priorities wouldn't be a bad thing to see at some point. I'm sure you're polling folks behind the scenes as to priorities, but perhaps a public facing poll wouldn't be a bad idea at some point.

EDIT - oh, and curves, a la Red Alert? Be great to have those in here and be able to save back to camera...or does the camera architecture not support? There was talk early on of having that as an intent, but it has been nearly 2 years now...

OK, ramble done.

-mike
