  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Schedule update?

Get used to "Red Time"

I always forget, but this seems to be pretty normal in the electronics world. I remember how many delays my HVX had to come to market, and the GH1 that was promised first in Feb. went to April then May to the first day of June and now is still nowhere to be seen.

Still, I would much rather know in advance when things are coming than they just show up unannounced, a week after i buy the old version ( yes apple I am talking about you. )

I considered never buying an apple product again because of this...

Thanks Jack!

That was exactly the information I was looking for.
So still aiming at around the same times (more or less).
Great! :)

Just to make it clear, I don't expect development of something as complicated as these amazing cameras to be on any type of a strict delivery schedule. Development at the bleeding edge of technology bears a lot of unexpected surprises and unforeseen problems and obstacles as well as opportunities that are just too golden to pass on, but take some extra time to develop. I know that first hand (through my own experience as a developer of high-end virtual instruments for the music industry), but just wanted to check in about any recent updates, as I'm considering the Scarlet FF35 as an in-house camera for FABLE ENTERTAINMENT and wanted to check how it aligns with our production schedules.

So far, so good.
I had no intention to take the discussion into any negative direction, and I personally think that RED has been delivering amazing and revolutionary technology much quicker than anyone else have ever been able to, and not meeting their initial targeted deadlines is only natural, especially if you consider that RED ONE was (is) their first product. Personally I have no criticism. Only a huge appreciation to both the attitude and the achievements.

Cheers,

Yuval

Ditto!

I respectfully disagree. Given the products and tech that are already in the marketplace I have to assume that Canon could have and should have been there first and faster. The problem is that they have so many other lines to protect, and are largely deaf to their customer's requests. (Great at service, bad with feedback.)

I think that wedding/event photo & video operations that have yet to adopt HD make up the largest single group within the Scarlet target audience. The problem is that in North America the HDTV transition is now complete and adoption is growing at a blistering pace. Consumer photo & video businesses that have not transitioned to HD already are definitely under pressure to make the move within the next year. If this is correct then winter really is the best time for Scarlet to make it to market, and every month of delay could mean enormous loss of sales.

Maybe I just view things funny but it seems to me that yesterday was the best time for Scarlet to make it to market, but for the same reasons.

First of all, I was referring to the products RED has already delivered. I cannot comment on the delivery schedule of products that have not yet been delivered to market, and were not even supposed to be delivered to market quite yet.

Furthermore, I'm quite surprised with your statement about Scarlet targeting for event videographers, especially on a thread referring to the Scarlet FF35, which is an extreme overkill for event videography. Canon's target audience certainly is consisted of many event videographers, but I expect the Scarlet line to be the choice of many independent filmmakers, DPs who want to own their own equipment, and production companies producing both low-budget feature films, television programing, music videos and commercials, while the Epic line will probably cater more for rental houses and the bigger production houses. If you're talking about the 2/3 inch built-in lens version of Scarlet that might make more sense, but even then, it seems to me that the RED workflow is more suited to film and television production (including news gathering with the smaller Scarlets) and less for the long format event videography that can easily make do with existing HDV cameras.
I have a lot more faith in the Scarlet FF35 than considering it to be an event videographer's choice.
Is it just me?

No, it isn't. You are just right.

If they are using a generic H.264 codec chip they should be able to program 25fps at least, the chips support common TV framerates.

What I don't think they can do is reprogram the live view algorithms that sub sample the sensor raw output.

RAW output should become the next hype about Canon's Mark II firmware update. Yes having control of exposure is phenomenal and a great step for Canon. But it seems that people can't get over this 24p. Yes it looks like film but digital is digital. GET OVER IT. Digital falls in its own category and I feel through out the next two decades as it evolves it will prove film wrong. 24p is a great option to have I'm not completely dis'n it but I think we should worry about other things than 24p.

H.264 is easy to use and stores well but I can't see why they couldn't wrap a 2K file if the DIGIC 4 Image Processor can handle such a load. If not a RAW file of 1080p to further the options in post would be lovely.

and how about the fixed lens version...wouldn't that be the best one to release first???

I am sure Red has a reason for not releasing the fixed lens first. I believe these guys know what they're doing and will only release their products when they are happy with them. I don't mind waiting another month or however long, if it means the product will be better.

yeah I need the CINEMA version so I'm glad we will likely see that one out first.
I still say 2009 for both models guys.

I am waiting for Scarlet complete kit. I hope it will be available during Fall. I have to shoot no later than December 1st.

What was the experience when RED ONE came out? Were there issues in the initial release? Did RED address the problems give updated cameras later etc? My concern is that the product will come out and there will issues with the first release. I never handled a professional camera before so I cannot do any fixing myself.

if the 5DMII did raw 24fps, a lot of people on these forums (even more people) would take it a bit more seriously. there would still be the jello holdouts but raw and 24p would require a serious look at it.

having said that, i don't think that's something you'll ever see with a 5DMKII. maybe a new body but not the current one.

I completely agree. Implementing compressed RAW ala REDCODE or CINEFORM RAW is VERY unlikely to be possible with a simple firmware update in the 5DmkII. Encoding to compressed RAW requires some serious horsepower which can only be implemented in a custom-designed chip (ASIC) or an FPGA (field programmable grid array - the chip which does the processing in a RED ONE).

Just consider the data flows involved. The 5D mk II has 21 million photosites ("5k" in RED parlance); each photosite samples at a 14-bit resolution. So at 24fps the datarate off the sensor would be 21M x 14bpp x 24fps = 7056megabits per second = 882megabytes per second. Huge! You then have to compress that on-the-fly to something which would be manageable on the storage card - not an easy feat. You can understand why the 5DmkII skips rows in its current video mode to keep the processing to a minimum. This is why RED are taking such care over their ASIC design - the ASIC has to do a hell of a lot of number crunching.

Can people tell me what ASIC, FPGA and OLPF stand for!

amany thanks

Many thanks Bing,

Now all l have to do is understand what they mean in relation to Red. Looking to get the Scarlet S35 and fixed 2/3 when out. But this waiting is fun as it forces you to do the research!!! Just wish it was here now as off to Norway for a weeks shoot, so will put up if my HPX171 which gives great images not not a touch on the Red to come.
