  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panasonic 11 series plasma monitors

You connect it through HDMI. So usually that means HD-SDI to HDMI converter.

Calibration is performed through the menu on the display. You feed it with test signals and adjust the colors based on the readout of a colorimeter. If you're serious about color this is best left to a professional (ISF calibration).

I'm talking about the 11 pro series. According to Panasonics spec sheet the PF11 series has two optional HDMI input boards: TY-FB8HM and TY-FB10HMD. Both are a couple of years old since they also work with older series. The specs don't mention HDMI 1.3 support and the guys at avsforums.com suggest that both models indeed don't do 10-bit.

Hmmm... The dual HDMI TY-FB10HMD dual-HDMI add-on only works with the series 10 and 11 panels and both corresponding consumer series panels with these displays support HDMI deep color. Unfortunately, I can't seem to round up detailed specs on this module, nor on the TY-FB11DD DVI input, which is new for the 11 series and probably holds better hope for full color input.

The TY-FB11DHD dual-link HD-SDI board is probably the best option, I've seen prices range from $1995 to $2495 (the latter being list price I think). So either way, it's more than half the cost of the 50pf11 display. But it may still prove for the best overall solution to monitor 2K/1080p. Most other display solutions on the market that provide equivalent input options and display quality are quite a bit more expensive.

Many people have experience with the Series 11 plasmas, because they're used in essentially every major post house in Los Angeles. They've become (along with some Pioneer units, although those are no longer manufactured) the de facto replacement for CRT's. LCD solutions have largely been rejected due to problems with the blacks and viewing angle issues.

You should be aware, however, that all of these installations are calibrated using very high end meters, and calibrated on a very regular basis.

They are very popular in NYC as well, we have been selling quite a few to the facilities here. Frequent calibration is essential.

No news about Panasonic pro plasma using G12 panels instead of old G11 panels because i see a big improvement between G11 and G12 panels on consumer plasma.

Anyone interested in consumer 12 series, get at least G10.
NEO PDP, blacks 0,03cd/m2, full 1080p motion resolution and additional settings for calibration.

0.03 Cd/m2... were did you see this number? did you measure it?

Hey Jeff did you ever receive any conformation about this? Either the DVI or HDMI board would be fantastic to avoid purchasing either the RedRocket BOB or the TY-FB11DHD dual-link HD-SDI board for 10-bit color. I'm looking at feeding the Red Rocket into a HDlink Pro via dual link HD-SDI and then feeding the 42ph11 with either DVI or HDMI so I can have 3D LUT support.

You don't need the Red Rocket BOB for 10bit output, not as far as I can tell. Should be able to connect a DVI cable or DVI to HDMI cable right from the rocket to your monitor that supports the right input signal.

The bigger issue is about the inputs on the 11-series display. I can't seem to get the right information about what input formats are accepted by which inputs. I haven't found the right person to get spec sheets for the input modules.

I've seen the prototype of the next version. They are tuning in to look more like the master monitor.

Jeff, we just installed one at our customer's studio the other day.

Let me know what you want me to check on. One thing we were bummed about was the slots not being all the same, in order to put HDMI board, we had to take out the DVI board.

I believe the dual HD-SDI is the only input that supports 10-bit.

If you have any technical questions, Drop an e-mail to Michael Millar at Panasonic... MillarM@us.panasonic.com. He's their expert on the plasma line (11 and 12 series)and gave me some pointers on calibration.

11 Series vs 12 Series

11 Series vs 12 Series

I can't speak to the differance. But I have a 50 inch 11 Series and a 50 inch 8 series. Apart from resolution they are very close. I can grade on one, send the footage to the other and they are scarily close. I'd advise not waiting for the 12 because if you do, you'll just be worried about the 13's.
