LA RED ONE Rental $150/day August 17-Sept 5th

I am going to be brave and step into the middle of this shit storm.

I can say that my day rate is higher than that but my month rate worked out is about the same per day. I am new to the business and struggling to get my camera rented out. I dropped my rate because my camera wasn't making any money sitting on my desk.

I can honestly say though that my rate is going up next month and as I get more of a client base my rate will go up. I want to be able to beat the competition through customer service but until I have more experience I can't honestly do that when going up against larger rental houses or a company that also provides high end post. I know with the larger houses the camera rate is higher, but sometimes to make the deal they drop other prices, for example post.

Hmmm...
I think people here are (rightly or wrongly) venting because many pros that own a Red package actually make a nice living from renting it. And by that I mean paying a mortgage, sending their kids to school, and saving for retirement so they won't be a burden on others years from now.
Hardly folks being "greedy".
Look at it another way Rouge. Would you like it if some of the excellent DPs who post here flew to France, contacted all of your clients, and offered to make "creative content" (to use your phrase) for 1/10 of 1% of your daily rate? You would not likely welcome them with open arms.
So don't be surprised that some are upset.
Unless you are trolling, or this is some kind of joke...
Cheers,
Harry

I myself wasn't even upset about it. Somebody offering rates like this from out of town would have zero impact on myself or anybody I work with.

I just figured I'd offer up some explanation/persepective why things like this aren't so good, and I kinda got insulted along the way. Oh well.

No, Harry. Not a joke (or a troll for that matter). Is $150/day = 1/10th of a percent of what RED cams rent for? That equals $150,000/day. In any case, if there are Americans who can come to France ( I am American incidentally) and can deliver the goods for a fraction of what I can, then my clients would be idiots not to go with them. It's an open market. Perhaps some people would like a state-regulated system, where only a chosen few can possess equipment like ours and prices are fixed by the state. Hmm... Not for me, thank you.

I think your math might be off by ...ohhhhh.....$148,500/day or so :)

Not my math Vince. The guy above who suggested that renting for 150 could be compared to someone offering work for 1/10th of 1 percent of a "normal rate". I just worked it out to illustrate the absurdity of the notion.

Ok RougeDP, did you bait this thread? You definitely should have been aware of the questionable responses the thread would generate. The business model seems way off, and would be difficult for any one in business to make any sense of such a low day rate.

I was exaggerating for effect, of course... ;) I guess I'm too subtle or need to use more emoticons to show I'm kidding.
No one is suggesting that any means other than the open market will set rates for any of this stuff. However, you laced your posts with comments that suggest you think everyone who owns a Red package (except you) is some sort of priviledged, whiny extortion artist.
I'm merely pointing out that some here find this annoying...
But I'm sure you'll do fine.
Cheers,
Harry

Well,

When it comes right down to it, the person who really looses on a cheap rental is the renter, because they are getting a camera that isn't being maintained or properly outfitted to do the job. And that hurts their production, much more than the extra 600 or so per day on a three day week.

I've often been charitable with my gear and resources but when I am it's free, and I'm usually also donating my time and knowledge to make sure things go well for someone who has been charitable with their time and resources as well... like the great guys I work with.

Offering up gear at a ridiculous price isn't smart for buyer or seller. The service you are providing should cost you money in maintanence and developing the package, that's what people are paying for in addition to your initial capital investment. If you aren't spending that money you are doing something wrong. If you want to be charitable to other artists, make it free and help them directly.

My POV.

I posted to fill those dates and it looks like they are filled. Mission accomplished. Camera is paying for itself and then some even at this "low" rate. The gentleman who is renting the cam already has a RED and this will be his B cam. He doesn't seem to have a problem with the rate.

Well said, that is my personal goal.

Well said Ian.
But I'm sure Rouge IS doing exactly that. He says "power to the artist" which is great. And certainly offering the camera for so cheap that it could certainly help a struggling artist make a great-looking project happen.
And I'm sure we all can respect this and support him.
However, most of the objections on the thread have to do with him implying that the rest of us here are greedy jerks...
Cheers,
Harry

For the record... I absolutely DO NOT think most of the people here are "greedy jerks". Absolutely not! That said, those who spit venom at me because I choose to do what I want with my camera would probably be best served by asking themselves how they found themselves in a situation where what I do, has such an impact on what THEY do. If it's all about the money, well there are other ways, less sensitive to open-market/supply and demand uncertainties. I really do feel for the person who HAS TO pay his mortgage with the earnings from his RED alone.

However, most of the objections on the thread have to do with him implying that the rest of us here are greedy jerks...

Why is everyone hating on this guy?

Every time I read about rental prices on this forum it disappoints me the way certain people treat others who may or may not be charging "too little".

I respect all of you, but lets play nice... welcome to capitalism!

Well there is a gathering here take a look at my rates on my website:

www.1dogstudios.com

I am raising my prices a bit next month.

Constructive criticism is welcome. The key word being CONSTRUCTIVE.

3000/month... That's only $100/day!!! I should rent from you and re-rent at 150! Are you trying to give these guys a heart attack! More power to you!!

Wait a minute, your charging $150 per day to RENT your red? Thats crazy.

We always send out our Red's for free, as long as you also rent our lenses or stedicam or crane or helicopter or our crews or use our post services or our filmout etc....

Yes, let's be constructive. Thank you, 1Dog.
Rouge? OK, I apologize. You never said "jerk". BUT... you used the following phrases to make your case:

>not bilk productions and aspiring filmmakers<
>That's pathetic. Equally pathetic are the "gonna-get-rich-off-my-RED" renters who extort DP's and filmmakers<
>Perhaps if you are only worried about enormous day rates and making money,<
>or because you're a schmo with an expensive camera?<
>You're not the coolest kid on the block anymore. <
>it's clear that most of you are arrogant, scared, combative<

Are you surprised that some here took those phrases as insulting?
And please, since you profess to be a free-marketeer, please don't bash people who may rent out their camera for more than $150 per day. No one here is relying on Red rentals alone to pay their mortgage. Many of us have film and HD cameras too, or make a nice living as AC's, DP's or directors.
Anyway, it's been fun... you've rented your camera... congrats. Let's all move on.
Cheers,
Harry
