  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

WTB: Actioncam RED Edition

For those of you who own an Actioncam-

01. how does it compare to a "Steadicam" Flyer "Red"??? Trying to decide between the 2... Of course Steadi having US support is a big plus compared to a Swiss one man show???

02. Pros & Cons???

03.

Thanks,
Prio

Never tried the flyer but Action cam is not a one man show for sure.

Thanks for the reply...

01. Can you comment on the Actioncams operation???

02. Do you love it???

03. Just trying to decide if the US dollar conversion, customs, overseas shipping, replacement parts etc.. Is it worth it over dealing with Tiffen????

I've read a lot about back problems associated with Steadicam in general. Some articles suggest those problems are due to improper usage but other articles describe serious long-term back injuries sustained by Steadicam experts who were following all the rules and using the rig 100% properly. I would love to fly a Steadicam but not at the risk of long-term spinal damage.

Advice?

1. It operates great. You can check out the demo videos on the Action Product website. Below is Charles Papert's opinion (a veteran steadicam operator!!). please keep in mind the concerns he did have were addressed by Brian..though of course Charles would be the judge to whether or not his initial concerns were addressed.

"Brian's rig was a pleasant surprise for me. I had last seen his gear a few years ago and it was unconventional to say the least (his original arm was a definite diversion from the norm) so I had no immediate expectations of his rig. At first glance I saw solid, thoughtful machining going on and while there are a few issues that I noted even before mounting up, Brian was right there in agreement and indicated that they were going to be taken care of, which is always a good sign.

When it comes down to it, the two most important components of any stabilizer are the gimbal and the arm. The gimbal did show a bit of stiction which we discussed, although for the price point Brian is working at this may be to be expected. The arm is impressive, with performance that is much closer to isoelastic than this design of arm would suggest (it takes less force to push all the way down or hold all the way up than much of the competition, barring the big brand names). It also tracks well and feels solid.

The ability to lift components off the RED and place them on the sled (monitor, battery rack etc) is clever, although eventually one would probably want to supplement some of this in case you end up flying a different camera. Certainly a daylight-viewable monitor with greater viewing angle than the RED screen will be required, it's impossible to boom through the range of the arm without the screen "reversing out" and it gets dusted outdoors for the most part. However, for folks looking to get their REDs up and flying with minimal duplication of parts, this is a smart idea. There are lots of ways to configure the masses, so you can make your rig nice-and-fast for action scenes or

The vest is OK--we talked about beefing up the support in the critical lumbar area, that will probably help a lot.

For those unwilling or unable to plunk down the big bucks for a full-on setup (after trying on the Actioncam and heading back to my own rig across the room, I pondered just how many of the former I could buy for the same price as my own investment; certainly enough to get all of the cameras at LART flying, and then some!), this is definitely a good choice. And the red anodizing is pretty cool too!"

2. yep i LOVE IT.

3. I don't have any experience with the steadicams you mentioned.. the flyer i believe though is a tad underpowered to handle a RED. I could be wrong.

I have one of these for sale, if anyone wants it. It's minty fresh and as good as new, and I'll sell it for $14K flat. The $14.8K price quoted by tonaci does not include shipping or import fees, so you'll save over $1000 off the price, if you can do local pick-up, an LA delivery (I would bring it by plane), or we could meet at NAB for pick-up, if you're not in a huge rush.

I had zero experience as a steadicam operator, and my first footage from this thing was rock steady. It's an amazing design and price point. Fine Swiss engineering. My reason for selling is that, since purchasing it, I met a great operator who I would prefer to hire before doing it again myself. I have no need to re-invent that wheel. I'm not desperate to sell it, either, so there is not much room on price, but if someone wants it and would put it to good use, that's great.

PM if interested.

PM sent.

I'm really interested in a group buy, BUT if we're only talking about a 5% discount ($740) that isn't much of a discount at all.

Tonaci, if there were a larger group, would the discount percent go up ?

Hi Alexander,

An official groupbuy is going to happen. Just wrapping up some details.
It will offer good discounts according to how many jump in. Complete info soon.

INvert the actioncam rod holder (release the allen screw in the middle). stick the rods horizontally, place the cradle by one side and the battery plate on the other both mounted on universal mounts.
I bought one 6ft cable for hardisk and one for lcd, they go into the metal pipe. This mounting makes the steadi slower. I dont know if its supported by the Goffs (actioncam owners) but it works for me.
Hope you can have a better view here...

Is it more difficult to set your dynamic balance with that configuration?

how many springs do you have in your arms?

thanks

...I didn't get that memo. I can fly mine solo whenever I want.

I actually have my ActionCam out on loan right now, but should have it back early next week. I'll take some pics of my rig. I don't use the RED cradle (yuck) don't even own one.

I think its easier, but i think that after a couple of intense day tests you understand how to get your balance in both ways. its just phisics.

I have 6 springs in the 1st part of the arm and 5 in the 2nd. Added one spring from the basic configuration.

Theres a misunderstanding here. I was referring to the company Actioncam, which one of us posters was claiming is a one man band company. Hope i cleared it now... english is not my native language :-(

Interesting, what do you use for your HD?

OK, that makes sense too. Maybe I didn't read it correctly. :)

Either the uGrip mounting box or the ET v-dock system. I started out with the uGrip box on a RED universal mount also the RED quick plate on a universal mount for the battery. This gave me a lot of option for placement and spacing of the two without the bulk of the cradle for all RED configurations, even on the ActionCam. Just recently adopted the ET v-dock system and I'm liking it.
