Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Jarred,

Buddy I think you are taking the path of most resistance here. Erik will have no more control over what his customers do after they get his product than you do. Certified installers are usually the result of a franchise situation like Panasonic. It's not realistic to expect that to work.

Also I would think you don't need to be tracking what could be hundreds of 3rd parties installations, I would guess you have better things to do.

Bottom line: You need working cameras for the trade in. If they are not working then they will have to be repaired. If you are in warranty then we'll fix it or take the trade in. If you are not in warranty then you will have to pay for it. If a part of the camer is damaged from a 3rd party then no warranty applies and you would still have to pay for it.

You cannot say "if you install the mount, you cannot upgrade" You CAN say "If you install the mount you may have to pay to have the camera checked" but in my opinion, thinking this through, either solution is more a pain in the ass than you need.

What you are trying to enforce will be an impossible nightmare. Think of this:

Joe REDguy get's the mount installed by Erik himself. Then Joe takes it home and decides to swap back to a PL mount, but accidently drops a dumbell weight on the sensor (Don't ask how) and the pulls paperwork from Erik's first install to say "see, he did it!"

The kind of control you are looking for is not possible.

You're better off saying: If you want to trade in: then it's got to work.

just my two cents.

Jay

Jarred,

I would like to ask you what about the status of a couple of guys who already installed IMS on RED according to upgrade path to EPIC-X?

Are we screwed or...?

Thanks for the call Erik. I'm confident this will get resolved in a way that will allow all parties to move forward. Maybe I can spare a candy-cane for you after all :)

IMS is a completely different Matter.. We are comfortable with proper installation of the Birger Mount as Erik listened to our feedback and although could not make the mount fit within the required structure of the warranty, he did make modifications to make it less painful and more safe.... IMS did not.

You cannot say "if you install the mount, you cannot upgrade"

Jay

Quite the contrary.. as soon as a customer opens up the camera, the Warranty and Upgrade Path options are tossed out the window, so that IS what we can say, and is what we do say, and that is our policy.

The Birger is just a special situation we created to help the customers out and we all thought it was gonna be rather simple :)

thank you jarred, I appreciate as always, RED taking care of us. email sent to brian. Phew..

no worries.

Hey.. did we ever decide who gets the movie rights to this thread? We might need to break this up into a Trilogy by now.

Thanks for providing fantastic customer service and care!

Trilogy implies completed story. I suggest episodic TV :) I thought we'd be done after the pilot; certainly season one. This second season is incredible though!

Yikes.

OFFICIALLY, from this day prior, we will wipe the slate clean for those customers that did non-certified installs. Just send Brian an email ( upgrades@red.com ) to let him know that you did the upgrade yourself and your upgrade path to EPIC-X will not be affected.

Huge sigh of relief... many many thanks Jarred - I'll email Brian. I seem to find myself on the dubious side of this equation. You guys are always, always more than fair - best business plan I know of.

Thanks again,
David

Wasn,t RED going to make their own Canon mount? Once upon a time, way back when... Whatever happened with that?
found this RED NEWS link through someone else's link to the "way back time machine" archive of Red web pages (my bolding).... and its been all downhill from there...

"Canon EOS lens mount for RED ONE

2007-04-11 06:12:00

(Lake Forest, Ca – April 15, 2007)

RED Digital Cinema, Inc. and Birger Engineering, Inc. announced today an agreement to develop and market a remotely controllable Canon EOS lens mount for the RED ONE Digital Cinema camera.

Stuart English, Workflow Wizard at Red Digital Cinema, commented, “This agreement allows RED customers to exploit the very large installed base of Canon EOS mount stills photography lenses, which provide excellent image quality at very affordable prices. The combination of high image quality plus remote focus and iris control from RED’s SuperGrip™ or other remote controllers, means the entry price point for 4K resolution digital imaging is dramatically lowered, opening up significant new applications.

Erik Widding, President of Birger Engineering, noted, "We’re delighted through this agreement to be able to support the many requests we’ve received from RED customers for an intelligent mount for Canon’s EOS series lenses. Working closely with the RED team, we have been able to move very quickly from product concept to working prototype units”

The prototype of the EOS mount for RED ONE will be displayed at the NAB Show, Las Vegas, April 16 – 19. Product pricing and delivery will be announced shortly."

I get third billing and Dennis Quaid is playinig me...

Very cool.

:)

...and the sheep.

Surely Ted has to be played by Bradley Whitford. Have you ever seen the two of them I'm the same place? It's the true mystery of Red.

I think me and Ted should switch.... Ted is way too nice to be played by Piven, and I yell way too much to be played by Ashton :)
