  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

I suspect there's a lot more Nikon glass out there than medium format... Nikon seems like the right business decision for the next mount.

OMG... this thread is still going?? :)

Even when all backorders are fulfilled, this'll be a place to smoke pipes and reminisce "Aaa...I remember the days you used to have to wait months and months. You young'uns don't know you're born!" :)

I'm thinking that this one is over. I suspect that Andy's mount, being "RED certified" already (with respect to mechanics) and well along with respect to electronics, is going to be out in volume before the Birger.

Now, exactly how Andy went from, apparently, ground zero to the head of the Canon class in front of a product that essentially already existed, is just beyond me. Either Andy is a genius or Birger. . . well. . .

I suspect that the end of the Birger mount thread is near. Indeed, it may be all over by January. The fact that Jarred let slip that RED itself might be the manufacturer of this mount will definitely be the final nail in the Birger coffin.

I'm really surprised to say the least.

Go back and read Jarred's comment. He was really clear in his message that he's making the mount certified. You somehow misread that as "we're making the mount". But I skim and misread things too, so no harm no foul.

Jarred also was reviewing the dumb mount, right? Andy has noted that he would like his focusing to be a little smoother - that is something Birger has already worked through and noted as an issue.

I got a chance to meet with Curt at View Factor for a few minutes when I was in LA and he told me the Birger mount is very well engineered with very high resolution focusing. If I remember right, he said the mount was higher resolution than the Impero could deliver and the Impero looked pretty damned smooth when I saw that demonstrated.

I wish everyone all the best in their designs, but Birger and View Factor do seem to have a pretty good jump on the field when it comes to a full blown wireless knob/mount solution. Also, the circuit board and antenna all being designed into the Birger makes for a very compact design. The downside is the install is tougher and will never be fully certified by RED.

(Of course, I've got a Birger sitting right here so I'm probably a little less frustrated than most on this thread)

Yeah sorry about that guys... I also want to be clear the certification has nothing to do with our relationship with Andy ( because there isn't one ) it is due to the fact that his mount does not require removal of foundational pieces of the camera and in doing so does not impact the warranty.

Just to clarify, the Birger Mount isn't certified by RED, but does not void the camera's warranty (as long as there's no damage), right?

The camera warranty stays in tact on the Birger mount if Birger does the installation... if you do it yourself the camera warranty is void.

Beta PC application was uploaded earlier today. This isn't quite as cool as the MAC version just yet. Need to upgrade to library 18 to use this. The following is a list of all current downloads

Camera to Erik for Installation

Camera to Erik for Installation

The camera warranty stays in tact on the Birger mount if Birger does the installation... if you do it yourself the camera warranty is void.

So I guess this means that our cameras HAVE to go to Erik if we intend on keeping our warranty intact.

So Erik would have to install the mount for us otherwise we're without warranty, this puts another crimp in the works and more expense to ship cameras around the country. No reason to ship a mount out unless Erik can install the mount.

Erik,

How do you plan on handling this? Need to know!!

I absolutely do not want to void my camera warranty.

Jarred, Are you talking seriously or is this some sort of early Alzheimer?

This is what you've said earlier in July or August:

"At this point we are prepared to move forward with this.. I am pleased to announce that the Birger mount will not void the global camera warranty with the modifications Erik has done.

Note though.. that any parts damaged from a potential electronic malfunction directly caused by the mount will not be covered.. and things like breaking the adjustable PL of the mount on removal/installation will not be covered ( since it never was designed to be removed)

Because of the removal of the adjustable section is required, the Birger mount will not be RED Certified, but I think alot of you will be happy with the fact that it does not void your global camera warranty."

The statement made by Jarred is in contradiction to previous public statements made on the topic. I have a call in to Jarred on this topic, please hold tight until we get a clarification. I am sure this is just a minor mistake, as the ploicy did change at one point from the one stated above, to the one stated below.

Your talking two separate issues Erik... When you first started sending the mounts out cameras started to blow up.. so we voided global warranty until you resolved the electrical issues. You finally fixed those issues, so we reinstated the global camera warranty and the only thing not covered would be direct damage after proper instillation of the mount.

You came here, and we agreed to these terms:

1. You would install the mount or have a 3rd party certified location install the mount.

2. Each mount instillation would be documented and visible to RED.

Since we have never seen a record of instillation, we have to assume there are no cameras with the Birger mount in the field yet. I have not been keeping an eye on your shipping schedule so I do not know if this is true or not.

Yes, please... Let's get to the bottom of this, ASAP... If it requires shipping the camera to Birger to have the mount swapped, I'll be canceling my order.

I swap between PL and Nikon, on average every other week. Once the Birger is in my hands, I expect to be switching between the three of them even more often...

Yes I'm in the same boat as you. I really hope this can get resolved. I was really looking for this mount, especially with ViewFactor involved.

Is it getting chilly in here, or is it just me?

From a customer perspective:

If a third-party modification breaks cameras, I can see a case for voiding the warranty, so I don't really have a problem with that.

If the policy is that the mount needs to be installed by an authorized entity, that's fine -- it just seems like that information had not yet been communicated.

I don't think anyone needs to be blamed for that (Birger and Red have both been busy, to say the least).

I'm sure anyone with an installed mount probably feels some ire, but then again - the warranty is only one year anyway, so you're probably not losing much...

"Can't we all just get along?"
