  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Erik, or Amy, I hate coming on here to do this, but I canceled my reservation 3 weeks ago and my CC has yet to be refunded. Please look into this. Thank you.

Best regards,
Jaadgy Akanni

Erik -

Really appreciating the updates. Thanks

I have taken a long and much needed break from this thread, so I'm hoping someone will be willing to get me up to speed on a few questions...

1. Are the Birger knobs and/or BT remotes shipping? If not, what's the latest update?

2. I see some discussion about the ViewFactor Impero. Is it being used instead of Birger's integrated FF? My understanding was the Birger was a beginning to end system that didn't need any 3rd party parts. Are there advantages to going with the Impero? I'm glad to see ViewFactor and Birger getting along. : )

3. I'm wondering about breathing compensation, zooming, and autofocus.

Erik, it's good to see you posting regular updates! I'm still planning to shoot my feature with the Birger. Can't wait to generate a user story for you!

Just got the first part from the shop. 20 parts are finished and will go to plating today... will have more information shortly.

Have you ever gotten a solution for mounting the antenna to a RED that has ET evf mount? There's only about 1/4" of clearance so I'm not a right angle plug will even fit in there.

Does the antenna require ground or is only one wire needed?

We are OEMing the Impero from ViewFactor, adding our own radio, and reselling it under the ViewFactor brand. It is just too good of a solution...

January will be when we start talking about these things. ViewFactor partnership frees us up to move on to the next cool features. The partnership is collaborative, so we expect to be able to roll out some pretty cool features on both platforms.

(edit)More importantly, we expect the partnership to free us up to finish enginerring and bring into production, the Birger Nikon and Birger FourThirds mounts. (/edit)

Right angle plug/adapter is what we were considering, along with a cable or tilt swivel antenna. The clearance with the new parts is 2mm less. Pictured right angle adapter adds about 12mm in mating height. So, you (or ET) will need to add some rise somewhere, as your 1/4" needs to be more like 14mm.

Even though I should know better, since each RED USER request for info has fallen on deaf ears (Erik's, that is) for months and months now, I'll give it another try anyway:

Please Erik, give us some idea of where you're at in moving forward with the Nikon version of the Birger mount. Now you're talking about moving forward with more features for the Canon Birger Mount, but no indication that the Nikon program is even still alive.

With the impending release of Nikon's D3X, the idea of updating my AFD lenses to AFS is becoming more interesting, but my whole decision to go ahead with my RED ONE order last fall in the first place was predicated on the existence of the Nikon Birger Mount.

If the program is dead, say so. If not, let us know. Otherwise, it makes less and less sense as the months roll by to buy into your system, since the Epic system is expected to have it's own electronic Nikon mount integrated into the brain of the Epic-X.

I have resisted calling you since last January, and this is the only other way to obtain any info on this issue, so, please, throw us a bone, will ya?

I second the request for an update on Nikon; I'm considering ViewFactor's Inclino as an interim solution, but I'd really prefer a Birger mount...

Are you feeling any more comfortable about a shipping schedule yet? I really, really do need to know when I can realistically expect the mount.

On monday we will post a schedule, still a few more variables that I want to factor in to the estimate. Shop is optimizing the feeds/speeds on the slow part of the process today, this will have a huge impact on the rate. Plater isn't running the tanks on fridays, and may have a holiday shut down.

I think wednesday is when the next mount will ship, and at that point, there are only 10 working days left in our year (including a saturday and a sunday)...

Birger Nikon and Birger FourThirds mount development programs are alive, though somewhat anemic the past few months, and will escalate in priority a good deal in January. FourThirds will come before Nikon, probably looking at February and March/April respectively for release.

Erik, any chance you can make those antennae stripes RED instead of pink?

Erik,

Birger FourThirds also for upcoming Scarlet 3K.

Btw, what happen with development of Birger to IMS for RED?

The maximum distance from RED front to Birger could be about 0.45" or 11.4mm

that is how I measered right know.

What does it mean?

It is about that Birger mount with electronic ring (that now has to be fixed with screws on the RED front)

could be customized and "attached" on the ring of IMS EF mount.

So that means back side of that sort of hybrid custom made mount would be IMS positive lock mount

and front side would be Birger EF mount.

Then Birger EF on IMS positive lock mount could be very easy to swap in a second on RED.

Can you imagine something like this:

You shoot at available light at standard lens size with Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95,

then you change to Canon 85mm f/1.2 for portrait telephoto

and then go back Master Prime 14mm T1.3 to get a wide shot of all location/situation.

Shoot all at 4K just with one camera RED1 (Mysterium-X upgraded).

No any other digital acquisition system could make something like that.

Those are fucsia on my monitor. One of us need a good calibration...

Hehe. Maybe... but when it's attached to the mount and sitting on top of my camera, the question usually asked is, "Hey, is that supposed to be pink?"

So, you (or ET) will need to add some rise somewhere,

I don't think there's a real easy way to add height to the EVF mount as it bolts to the front of the RED top mount. I guess parts could be made but it sure seems like it would be easier to run wires to the bluetooth antenna jack or the circuit board itself.

There's a tiny antenna chip in the the USB bluetooth adapters for laptops. Maybe that could be rigged up.

BTW, the new Sigma 50mm 1.4 seems to work fine with the Birger and it appears to be a very nice lens. Great mechanics. Feels a lot like the 24 and 35 L lenses.

"When Sigma first announced the 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM in March, our story headline (courtesy of our news editor and punmeister-in-chief) was 'A new standard?', and this has turned out to be remarkably prescient. This new lens essentially redefines its class, and for once the results really live up to the marketing hype; compared to previous designs, we see significantly improved sharpness at large apertures (presumably due to a reduction in aberrations through the use of an aspherical element), and substantially lower vignetting due to that that oversized lens barrel. Chromatic aberration (both axial and lateral) has been impressively minimized, and distortion is low - in optical terms there's simply little to fault."

Joel:

I have a complete machine shop with Haas CNC and a bunch of left over Mic6 aluminum material from our frontplates and have been looking at making a lightweight lens support as well as a viewfinder mount for myself and maybe other Birger users. Is there any reason you have to have the RED top mount? - or could we just make a direct mount to the RED camera front 1/4-20s and a higher spot for mounting a similar EVF mount?

I know you already bought your ET, but many others haven't and in some ways it seems better to accommodate the lens mount than vice versa and would appreciate your input.

VIEWFACTOR:

You guys seriously rock and have maximum respect. I'd like to see a lot more companies around these parts with your attitude.

Eric, I hope you are not aging quickly and your wife is not complaining too much about how she thought married life would be so much better.

Amy, I hope you are still laughing...

I use RED handle on the top mount and use the top rods to mount my RED Drive. So in my case I like the top mount.

I did find a solution last night for my problem. I mounted the ET mount on top of the the RED top mount instead of the front and moved the RED Handle to a universal mount just behind the top mount. Not ideal really, but it appears to be a good solution.

That said, I'm sure there's room for more alternatives in the EVF mount world. Certainly a different design could probably both accommodate the antenna and the RED top mount.
