  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Things are looking good. We've been experimenting with different assembly methods to get rid of noise, this isn't a show stopper, just trying to see how far we can push the envelope to take on the big guys like preston/cmotion etc. I think we are going to have to stop playing around and just send it out and see how its received.

Were building up 10 units that are going out to some lucky folks and we are doing our best to get them out this week. There were some last minute tweaks to the Impero boards to allow us to connect to the Birger without a serial adapter and to allow easy firmware updates via USB thumb drives. Those should be in towards the end of the week as well.

As soon as we have our feedback from the guys testing the units this week we will put up the final ship dates. We expect to be building up anywhere from 50 to 100 units per week so the backlog should disappear by the middle of December.

Awesome Curt, can't wait to try this out. I think you're doing the right thing. Get them out there and improve on the design as time goes on. As long as you offer some incentives for people to upgrade to the newer models later on, I think everyone will be happy.
 
From what I saw at the VF headquarters last week, they're very close to shipping. Motors were in the process of being assembled and there were boxes upon boxes of parts just waiting for their shot.

The motors have come a long way since the old youtube videos of yore. They are much quieter and have a stunning amount of torque. The resolution of the encoder is perhaps the most impressive part. With a motor laying flat with a laser pointer taped to the gear, turning the handset its smallest increment [in the lowest speed mode] resulted in the laser point moving roughly 1/4" on a wall 20 feet away.

There's a lot going on in the brain of this thing. There's a lot of room for upgrading it via software. Whatever functionality it ships with [which I'm sure will be plenty to begin with], It has a lot of room to grow.

I'm not going to pretend like they're the quietest motors I've ever heard. If you're doing a kung fu zoom, you'll hear them. But for the kinds of pulls that people actually do on a day to day basis, the motors will be quieter than the fans in the camera. It's quieter than just about any motor I've ever used with a Bartech.

Look forward to this thing, guys. It's pretty amazing to see what they've managed to do... and they're selling it for pennies.

Brook/Curt. . . how loud are those motors? You mentioned the noise level when compared to the cameras. Since we have our cameras in silent-while-recording mode (which isn't entirely silent, by the way), is that the level you are talking about? That would be very quiet, indeed. On the other hand, if they are as loud as the RED's motor when it is running, that would be very, very loud. In our view, the RED is unusable indoors without it being in silent mode.

The beauty of your master design is the software/firmware upgradeability!

If it is feeling pretty good then send out the 10 to the Alpha testers. (I would be happy to be one ;))

Just to clarify, I don't want people to think that I'm trying to suggest that a few thousand bucks isn't a ton of money. I'm more suggesting that the Inclino/Imperio would be a great deal at twice the price.

I don't know Brook, I saw you driving around in that new custom Rolls Royce the other day. I think you might be out of touch with us poor folk here on Reduser.:)

Mine was called Velvet, that is before they came and repossessed her. It was always kind of odd pulling into the driveway of my rather modest house though. The looks I used to get from the neighbors - priceless.
 
I heard its takes a pretty penny to wash hogs these days....
 
Couple of questions,

Did the cost of the Impero/Inclinos go up from their cost at NAB?

Will we be able to adjust the torque control on the Inclinos? I have a Nikon 17-35, which suffer from a very short focus throw. I'm hoping Viewfactor can fix this.
 
1) yes, the prices did go up.... We decided to keep Impero made in the USA which added cost on the plastics. Inclino's cost went up due to expensive bearings.

2) Torque control on the knob of the Impero went away... its a long story but the short of it is we spent WAY too much time and money finding a cost effective way of doing it and i the end just made it with a constant dampening. Its very nice regardless.

3) The focus throw issue is easy, we have a gearing button on the impero that will allow you to use the entire range of the knob to control the limited range of the focus throw. We were trying it on the red 18-50 and have tons of control in the 20' to infinity range - this all depends on the repeatability of the lens of course.
