  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Where is the new Arri Matte Box + FF combo?

Mitch,
Is this a better option than an LMB-5 if you want a lightweight clip on?

Can it be adapted to other lenses, ultras, cookes etc?

It can most certainly be used on other lenses, although the variety of clamp-on light traps will come down the line. Currently the only clamp-on ring is the one sized for the EX1/EX3 Fujinon lens. Clamp-on rings for other Arri matteboxes won't work. With time these will be available but I can't give you dates. When this does come it will give you a clip-on mattebox with 2x 4x5.65 filters that covers out beyond a 14mm UltraPrime. Don't know how much further as that's as wide as I've tested! It will be heavier than an LMB-5 or LMB-15, but there is the added bonus of the rotating rear stage, and the MMB-1 is staggeringly less expensive to purchase.

So yes, it will eventually be a very viable alternative for that.

Mitch,
Just sent a quote request to Abelcine. Wondering if you have 15mm studio (100mm spacing) adapters available?
Thank you.

BB

I've sent you a private email as well.

We will eventually have an Abel 15mm studio to 15mm lightweight adaptor of our own, but in the meantime we can sell you units from other manufacturers.

Mitch
Adding the 19mm adapter is a great idea, especially at that price :)

The Arri adapter alone can easily cost $400

Thanks, this is exactly why the unit was designed and built. There was a need.

Good news everyone!

I know how you all dislike having to contact us for a quote, and I had asked that these products be listed with their prices right on the website. Just discovered that it was an oversite on the RED bundles that they were not. So now the prices are up and you can order directly.
The RED bundle for the MMB-1 (with rear bellows and Abel rod adaptor) is $2050.
The RED bundle for the MFF-1 (with .08 film pitch gear wheel and Abel rod adaptor) is also $2050.
That's $4100 for the pair, which is still a lot less than either an MB20 or an FF-4.

Also, the videos about this gear is finally up on our website. Watch me fumble my way through showing off these toys!

Thanks so much for these, it's wonderful to see these products from people that made the gear I've been using since back in film school.

Know how much the MMB-1 Red Kit weighs?

Mitch, not really a good news to me.
Price just went up $300 per kit as earlier posted on Abel's site;I'll take it as an error:)

Cheers
How do I proceed from Canada, ey ?

It is not an error on our part, it is a misinterpretation by you. ;-)

Take the MFF-1 follow focus. On its own it is $1750. The RED bundle adds the Abel road adaptor, and that bundle is $300 more. You can still purchase the follow focus alone for $1750 and that price was listed on our website previously. We're now listing the RED bundle price, which in an oversight had not been listed before.

One the MMB-1 mattebox RED bundle, then rear bellows to 114mm is substituted for the light trap ring for the EX1 and the Abel rod adaptor is added.

If the website does not allow you to directly place an order from Canada, please contact us directly by phone or email to place one.

Mitch,

Is the rod adapter available for purchase on it's own? I can't find it on the web site other than with the bundle.

It is available on its own, we just haven't gotten it up on the website yet. That will happen soon, but in the meantime you can see the Abel product code listed in the RED kit bundles so you can phone or email one of our Sales Reps. to ask for one. The part is AB-1519 (as in Abel 15mm to 19mm adaptor).

We have something like 15,000 items in our database and certainly nothing like that number up on our website. But I agree that this should be up there. It will be soon. We just had someone contact us to order a whole pile of 'em.

Mitch,

But how is the mechanical quality compared to the ff4/ff5? can it fit bigger barrel lenses?

I am at a loss as to what to buy... and I get my camera next week...

best,

Sid

If you can afford and your package is cine-lenses then go for ff4/MB20.
It's sort of a industry standard.
If you want to use photo lenses or simply have limited budget go with the MFF-1.
The MFF1 will work on any cine lenses.
FF4 doesn't reverse the gears, and that is one reason I am getting MFF-1.
Cheers

Hi Mitch
You may remember me. I will be in NY on Monday then i will leave same day afternoon. If your NY office has stock can i go and pick the items? (mattebox and ff)

to be honest.. i have never worked on a pro set with a mb20...
but def ff4 is standard. its really either lmb-5 , mb 14 or 18

In comparison to the LMB-5, are these similar? I'm almost sure that I saw one feature on the MMB1 that allows rotating.

The LMB-5 is clamp-on only and has no rotating stage. It is designed to be extremely lightweight. The MMB-1 is physically about the same size but does weigh more. It can be clamp-on or rod mount. It has a rear rotating stage, which also means more weight for the assembly. The build quality is all Arri -- top notch.

The mechcanical quality is top notch. Arri doesn't do it any other way. They've almost made this product too good for the price! I'm actually more impressed by the follow focus than the mattebox.

I can tell you that the range of adjustment of the MFF-1 is very good. I've mounted it on tiny little primes and on huge Optimo zooms. Some other follow focus units have a problem fitting to the new 18-85, but the MFF-1 fits easily. Ask Mark from Off Hollywood. I let him try out both the mattebox & follow focus the day he got his zoom.

Absolutely, the MB20 and the FF4 (or FF5) are still top of the line Arri products which offer more features than the MMB-1 and MFF-1. If you have the funds than the big guys will not steer you wrong. But for less than half the price (close to a third!), the new bits of kit do an amazing amount for you.
