Steve Gibby
Red Savant
I think some visuals would be good. I know Gibby loved this head. I think that I will too... but for trip I'm taking out to Europe over the next 3 months, I'm trying to decide if the arrow 55 will be light enough...
I'll post some pics here this evening of one of my Miller 55 heads in action on location, on both the alloy legs, and the Solo 1505 VJ CF legs.
Here's some weight facts: the Miller 55 head weighs 7 pounds - same as the Miller 40 head. The Solo 1505 VJ CF legs weigh 6.8 pounds. The entire tripod package with the Solo legs weighs 13.8 pounds. That's not very heavy for a good head/leg combo that is very portable and easily carried. You can get a shoulder strap from Miller for that rig that enables you to simply sling it over your shoulder and hike/walk. If RED One is in a good backpack, then you have a mobile, both hands free, ability to hike anywhere - which is exactly what my crews and me do with that equipment.
I fly with the tripod in an inexpensive golf club hard shell case ($100). The bonus is that many airlines still don't charge you to fly with "golf clubs", but they will charge you oversized fees with a tripod hard case - go figure! They figure the golf guys will be frequent flyers and don't want to upset them by charging for their clubs, but the TV/film guys have company budgets to pay for excess baggage.
Inside the hard case I have the tripod in a soft case which makes it easy and clean for transporting the tripod when outside the golf hardshell, and when its time to hike with it, I take it out of the soft case and simply use the shoulder strap.
BTW - sounds like Burning Man was cool for you Mike! Sometime I'd like to check out the footage.
