  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Time to share RED ALERT HEAVEN.

A picture is worth a thousand words. That is VERY helpful, thanks for sharing.

I was wondering what adjust to FCP gamma curve means>? Is there a pre set or are you making up for the adjustment?

Setting the curve this way, makes your new QT's look the same as what they will look when they are viewed in FCP.
In other words, REDCINE image and FCP image will look the same once you make the new Quick times.

I was told this can be done on the set, save the settings and import the data into the camera so when you shoot the scenes, the QT Ref's have the grade already. Now, I know what I'm going to hear -- "like we have time when we're shooting to do this". Well, it's not like we have anymore time in post either; so you're damned if you do or damned if you don't

Thanks for the cheat sheet, I'm going to try it today.

I only use it, when I want to change a shots look or save a shots exposure or bring out detail in the high lights etc.
Usually during editing or online.

Just pretend your shooting film and don't worry about trying to grade on set.
Information and content is what your after. Grading is one of the last things to do, once you have edited and added your VFX.

Secret is to stop shooting RED like a video camera, Shoot it like a film camera. Only worry about content, exposure and basic white balance. GRADING on set....
Adjust your client HD monitors for the clients, Leave your onboard monitors as standard so you fine tune exposure correctly.

easy

Is this the same as PISS EASY?

Just kidding, thanks, I'll give it a whirl...

Part of the "PISS EASY" method.:whistling:
I'm thinking of doing a little video for the people that don't have a clue.
seeing is better than reading.

Wait,
I thought the curve information from RA didn't transfer into the QT Reference files yet ? Has this changed in the last version ?

And why not use the Redspace gamma curve instead of REC709 ?

Nils.

I think RA doesn't transfer into QT ref files yet but setting the curves like he did will give you a good 'preview' in RA with a gamma curve close to the one FCP uses internally.

So even if RA then exports without the curve it will end up in FCP looking close to what you saw in RA when tweaking the values...

Kind of a nice workaround until RA is updated.

Thank's Big T

But don't you think that red log "flat" images give you a higher latitude for grading in color...

you can't open the proxies in Color, so it doesn't matter. I think the decision to use 709 is (like the curves) to match QT's Gamma, not to give you the best result.

Big T,
What are your render settings for final output?
(Once you've done your offline.)

Great tip, thanks.

I am using it to get some quick looks in FCP, and to correct some shots that are off.

With the latest QT plugin, though, it seems, that the footage looks more like it was in the REDspace, rather than CameraRGB, and then rec709.

The footage does not seem to match with Big. T.'s settings as good anymore.

If you have time, would you mind to look at that? I quite suck at matching gamma curves, and ergo I do only really easy cc.

Thanks

ugh. Big T, save us!

Hi,
I follow the fxphd lessons and I've recently watched the one that explains your workflow: red alert - final cut.
It's a really clever and fast way for works for tv and I think now with build 17 it's gonna be easier with the 4k HD format. I'm very impressed about the quality of your works, especially the cars commercials have amazing colors, do you think it's possible to get that color on apple color or after effects? Or do you need Flame or a serious grading software to get that glossy effect I've seen in your works?
Another questions: when you shoot with the camera a tv commercial for instance which color space do you set on camera? Rec 709?
Thanks.
