  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So, is 1080p now up and running in Build 17?

I just moved to B17 and in reading the manual, it now appears as if HDMI and HD-SDI are able to kick out 1080p signals, with the HD-SDI at a true 4:4:4. I love this, but it means I need to run out and buy a new production monitor. Any thoughts on a good, low-priced 1080p HD-SDI-capable monitor for me?

What isn't standard about the HDMI signal???? I used HDMI from Build 15 for our video village, but I only had a 720p monitor. Do I need something special to use the HDMI at 1080p now? (I want to upgrade from 720 to 1080.)

If it worked then, it will work now.

The HDMI signal is not compatible with all HDMI devices. Seems to me that if you use a hdmi to DVI converter, DVI devices work just fine. You don't get menues and lookaround with that solution, but neither camera noe monitor crashes... :)

Haven't tried with 17 yet, but AFAIK this was not on the remedy list. I think the res on the HDMI output is the same as on the EVF... (???)

Okay. . . my confusion. . . this jump to 1080p is ONLY on playback, and not on monitoring while shooting. Bummer.

I have menus and lookaround from HDMI - DVI to my Dell 20' monitor in 720p. I know people are having issues with HDMI to HDMI 1080p televisions. Some are compatible and some aren't. I'm on build 16.2.5

There are some issues being reported with 1080p HDMI to 1080 HDTV's. We are investigating the cause of that.

As a general statement the 1280 x 720p and 1280 x 848 outputs work fine, although there may be some exceptions to that.

And you will get menus if you select DVI (menus) and feed the HDMI output to a DVI equipped computer monitor.

That's exactly what I do to veiw the lookaround and menus on my 20' Dell for preveiw monitor.

Same here with computer monitors.
But some professional video monitors don't seem to like a true progressive signal, they probably expect PSF. Maybe some converters too?

Stuart,

Can we expect 1080p live monitoring in the near future?

Is Red still planning on delivering 1080p live monitoring only when/if they release a dedicated 1080p RGB build?

Dave,

Given the caveat that we constantly look for new ways to do things, providing 1080p live outputs during record requires that that camera is recording RGB.

But you lost HD-SDI output when u switch do DVI menus. Is it improve on build 17 ?

If this will help: I bought a 46' Sony Bravia (KDL-46V3000) for use with my Reds. I have connected it to 4 different Reds spanning many builds. One thing is constant: It immediately locks up the camera and you can do nothing but power off and restart. (It does make a good monitor for my editor though.)
I also have tried a number of widescreen computer monitors, using HDMI to DVI converters. One did not work at all, (the first one I tried), one worked partly, (startup problems with the monitor) and the Acer P241WA works perfectly, so I keep one connected to each of my Reds.

Mike, which 20" model do you use? Do you get 1:1 pixel mapping or does the image get distorted?

This is the Dell Monitor I use http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...etail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-5123

I bought it cause its really inexpensive at $219.00 and I use it for an on set monitor mostly when I am doing DMT on set. I hooked it up the other day to my RED and it works great in DVI (Camera Menu Option) mode through an HDMI to DVI cable. No distortion at all. Not the best monitor for post cause I must say the viewing angle on these is not that great but for set work it is light and fairly compact and does the trick. Although, I cannot do 1080p playback from the camera to this monitor. Haven't tried my new Samsung 46' 1080p TV although from what i've heard I'll be expecting a lockup possibly.

Reading all the comments, I am getting more and more concerned as the delivery of my Red is approaching. If it is of any help, the following is a quote from Red FAQ:

"Because of the varying standards of the “consumer based” HDMI protocol, not all computer monitors and televisions can accommodate the 1280 x 720 signal. Currently, the following monitors have been tested and recommended by REDUSERS as offering full screen display and menus:

* Westinghouse L2410NM
* HP w2007
* Sony KDL26S3000 26″
* Dell 2405
* Gateway FHD2400 24″ "

I have the Westinghouse L2410NM monitor but no camera to test it.

Don't be concerned, it shouldn't change your decision to buy the RED. For less than $300 you know you can get a 24" DELL that definitely works, even if you find yours doesn't.

RED works great on my 42" LG LCD via HDMI in full 1080p. There are definitely working solutions.
