  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Upgraded Audio boards /i pins in NEW cameras - Now Shipping

We will let you know (by camera order) what lenses need to be sent in. The change over in firmware did not happen exactly at the time we changed from Yellow to White ( just to complicated things ) so to be sure we need to notify by serial number, as some white lenses may have the old firmware, and some yellow lenses may have the new firmware.

Hmm, we got a white lens with our first camera and a yellow (earlier serial number?) with our second!

Anyway, I have full faith that Red will figure out whether they need to be sent back or not.

Will you guys also tighten up the lens if we send it? Our white one has a lot of play in the focus ring which clients understandably don't like. If it wasn't being used so much I'd have sent it back for a service already. Yellow one seems fine in that regard.

Cheers again for the info Jarred!

yeah... it is Rather confusing Paul :) Thank god for serial numbers :)

i havnet picked up my camera Jim will it have Pin for cooke s4/i lens?
my camera is 2198.

Jarred,

Sorry to be a paing about this, but I am very curious about what the new version of the audio boards contain. Is this a major change/upgrade, or mainly hardware that fixes issues.

Once again sorry to bother

Jay

Audio Board

Jay, the main advantages of the newer audio board are

a) higher overall sound quality

b) clean phantom power output

c) removal of the need to use the special level adjusting cables.

Operationally its pretty transparent though. If you are using line level inputs using the special level adjusting cables into the existing audio board, your recorded sound quality is still better than most - if not all - camcorders at any price point.

You know I just gotta ask!!....Better...camcorders??

I'd hoped it'd be better than most pro kit w/ integrated sound?

Line input recorded sound quality was already better than most existing professional integrated camera / recorder systems, the new audio board takes it to the next level, and also addresses the phantom power issue and microphone input pre-amp performance.

I thought I read 2 days for RED to change out the sound card and the lens deal.

Audio

I know the sound recordists we work with will be asking for the exact specs. Red One has unfortunately earned a reputation as being 'not good for sound' so some real numbers would help.

What specific audio specs are you asking for ?

Thats what I just said :red_bandana:

I've been using microphone level in with external phantom power and it sounds great to me... heck, I've been shooting a lot of audio right to RED with no problems.

It does get noisy if you crank the gain up but I haven't needed to. Even whispers are captured at 34.

The whole headphone thing seems a little weird. Has that been addressed? If you put a mini plug on the camera it should really support 16 ohm earbuds IMHO. Those are a great way to monitor since they are sealed against the ear. Do any high impedance headphones even have a miniplug?

Yes that issue has been addressed with the new audio board.

We've had great luck with going line-in directly into the RED through a SD302.

We also have a weird glitch with one channel of the headphone output not working sometimes. If we re-start the camera, it clicks on and is fine.

Stuart-Is the headphone output part of the audio board upgrade or should we put in a separate repair ticket for that when we send it in?

Thanks.

Its part of the audio board upgrade Kevin

All existing camera owners will be getting an email from me early next week with upgrade program details.

I just came across this post. Did this e-mail ever go out?

Not yet. The Pinewood UK RED facility had to be finalized so we could get the logistics squared away to a point where we could confirm and announce details of upgrade program. So, with that done, details on upgrade program coming soon....
