OptiTek Clip-on

OptiTek Clip-on

Hello Dustin,
Let me go first:
My clip-on is made of sheet metal aluminum and has machined aluminum housing for the optics with simple focusing mount. I decided on aluminum sheet metal for ruggedness and weight purposes- I've seen too many broken plastic lens shades. Also I felt that plastic "clip-on" tabs could break off too easily. The unit is retained by a thumb screw that fits into the bottom 1/4-20 hole in the monitor
Optically it's as clear as they get. The frame lines are straight and you can see every pixel on the monitor all the way in the corner. No color fringing either.
I expect the unit in production form to weight 11-12 oz (300-330g)
The price I expect to stay around $400 retail with a special promotion for 30 days (from last weeks post) of $50 off for the total of $350.

Hi Dusty

Both do the same thing. I choose plastic (durable plastic - I can stand on it) because aluminum can bend easily - if you bend it back, it breaks. I payed attention to the potential week spots - I designed the ActionCam and think I know what to look out for:) Weight is 360g. Optics are great (the same company makes lenses for Arri) and give you a clear image with no color fringing - slightly adjustable, tested two crews (50+ pairs of eyes) and all found it to be comparable to the EVF but that the View-Box gives you the impression of a much larger image).

Cheers
Brian

Just saying hi-don't want to be a stranger

Just saying hi-don't want to be a stranger

Hello Brian,
First let me say that I value and respect your engineering skills in Actioncam.
I can appreciate good engineering regardless of my vested interests.
Having said that- 6061T6 aluminum is pretty hard to bend- much harder than ABS plastic- I asume you are using(correct me if I'm wrong!!!!)
Other than that The only main difference- I noticed is that my unit focuses to compensate for varying eyesight while I haven't seen any forcusing provisions on your prototype. I'll let you clarify that. There also is OptiTek price advantage- about 20% at this point....
Please don't take this personally- I'm just trying to clarify for everyone interested the features on our upcoming products.
With all due respect,
Jacek zakowicz, OptiTek

me likes this competition.. competiton's advantages.. in benefit of the customer.. a finest example actually.. for anyone.. red included..

edit
that price advantage point.. just perfect.. :)

edit2
btw, i will buy yours jacek.. plus other stuff from there too.. price advantage point.. ehehehehehe

Sounds like they're broadly comparable except possibly the Optitek variable diopter - so may come down to where you're located. Brian's in Europe and Jacek in the US.

Exchange rate, cost of shipping, duty and VAT would probably negate the smallish difference in price, if you don't buy "local".

We just got a booth at IBC and have decided to hold production till then. We will show the prototype at IBC, get some more input and then get into final production.

Hi Brian,

Look forward to seeing you then,

Best wishes,

Stephen

Well, Actioncam had their prototype, which they are evaluating on whether to produce or not. Cost 500 USD, made of very solid plastic. I had a look through it, and that's all it took to convince me to get one if they ever should go into production. If you can only afford either the LCD or the EVF, then the LCD plus the Actioncam thing would be a perfect solution. That said, some people seem to prefer the Actioncam solution over an EVF. Your milage may vary.

BTW: As Actioncam told me, they are usually staying away from plastic, but in that case it turned out to be more solid than a aluminium solution.

Getting close!!!

Getting close!!!

Hello everyone,
Clip-on finder update:
I have not gone to IBC.
The redesign for more compact size caused delay.
The search for a sheet metal vendor that could do small quantites at low price also took some time.
First few sets of machined parts are finished.
Glass is also here.
Sheetmetal will be done by next week.
When all parts are here I'll let everyone know we are close to shipping.
Your reward for patiently waiting will be a very well made product at a very attractive price. I hope it's worth it to you.....:construction:

Thanks for the update guys.
As you probably know there are both plastic and metal RED LCDs out there so it would be good to test your products with both versions. I don't know if the dimensions are exactly the same or not. I suppose someone from RED could answer that question.

we used the Optitek out at Burning Man. it was the beta. It worked well.
