  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

And of course, to remember, although the D3 is very good, some of it's "goodness" is just chroma noise reduction in software...

So what is thee trick to increased dynamic range? This is the issue that plagues me most, shooting outdoors.

Higher DNR sensors... that's exactly what we are working on.

Jim

Cool. Will the higher DNR sensor be ready in time for the DSMC?

I just got a D90 and the video mode is sucky. Terrible skew. Poor controls ( for video ) feels like an afterthought. Should be easy and kind of fun for you guys to kill that.

D90 seems like a nice consumer camera otherwise...

I'd be hyped over an interchangeable lens camera that was good at video and stills and used a decently large sensor - 22-24mm across like APS C or the Red One.

I wonder what you've got in mind for lenses... I hope it's an open system.

i expect the PL mount option ! It would be great for director of photography on the set.

I hope the DSMC will be genlockable so I can use two for 3D
action sports ?

I'll shake your hand Jim if you can beat the low light sensitivity / High ISO performance of the Nikon D3. I think thats the most important hurdle to get across.

There is a recent post of the CMOS rolling shutter skew problem with the Nikon D90... not pretty. The only reason I bring it up is to point out that there are lots of factors in CMOS development. Just having an APS size (or S35 cine) CMOS sensor does not mean that they all perform the same. Our rapid-reset Mysterium does not have the same characteristics even though it is CMOS based.

RRM Hmmmmm......
The Nikon D90 has to be a test into the moving video world for Nikon.
Someone set-up a vimeo channel for just the d90.

Until the RED DSLR gets here I see the d90 taking off and
being the bloggers camera of choice.

Whoa! That's really bad. You might call it the "Ike" effect.

Ooh Mrs, you're so wobbly.

Graeme

I just had to explain to a friend why here D90 clips look like jello. She couldn't get any straight answers out of the store that sold it so she's returning it.

Sigh.

I want my DSMC!

This wouldn't qualify as a DSMC in our books. The D90 is a terrific consumer DSLR. The D3 is a terrific pro DSLR. When Canon comes out with their "video capable" version of a DSLR... check the skew 1st.

Make sure a bowl or plastic bag is handy when you do . . . . or take some Dramamine!

So the question I have is, how do you blend them?
This is purely a philosophical question. Obviously Red has other cameras to consider...
Epic, Red One, Scarlet and they all offer very well thought out solutions to their respective market segments but how much of the DSMC will be still and how much moving? The Scarlet is mostly a video camera but has a still button, will the DSMC be mostly a still camera with a movie button?

There is a creative solution for every problem. I'll go on record as saying this is our most exciting project because it has the most problems to solve.
