  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone recieved the microMatteBox for Red One?

No black flecks or flaking finish on the mattebox I received. But I did have that filter stage issue where the stages were not seated properly. I took it apart a couple times, re-seated the stages and it was better, but still not right and if I locked off the stage closest to the front of the mattebox and left the stage closest to the camera free, rotating the free stage wouldn't work so well. It would catch with enough force that if I did force it to move, it would move the locked-stage. Behaved even worse with the filter trays installed.

I sent the mattebox back to RedRock for repair / replacement, but I don't know when to expect something back from them. Hopefully soon.

Overall, I'm still very pleased with the product, especially given the price. If I can rotate my stages as I should be able to, I'll be a happy camper. Hopefully I'll receive a repaired or new mattebox soon.

UPDATE:
So, I had to go in and do another cleaning, trying to go through every crevice to make sure I get as much of this junk out as possible. The toughest thing is trying to see if I'm getting it out of the included foam.

Bummer- sounds like you had a lot. The one that I got had a few, but nothing that a quick cleaning didn't remedy, and they never came back.

As Alexander said a couple of posts before - biggest complaint is the missing additional stages. But besides that, I'm impressed with the MB. We did have a bit of a problem with the arm first: no matter how hard we tried, we couldn't seem to thighten the screw on the arm enough to hold the hinge and the whole mb. Drew from RR was very helpful and came up with an easy fix: just put another (two) washers between the thumbscrew and the arm - problem solved.

One other thing I like about Arri MBs is that the swing away mechanism locks into position once you swing the MB away - RR doesn't have that feature, so changing lenses in uneven conditions may cause some problems. Also, the stages will fall through if you don't pay attention. Arri seems to have it's advantages after all...

Conclusion: it's a nice MB, especially considering the price. Go get one unless you can afford Arri.

Thanks RR for this product.

I agree. The Redrock seems much better to me than the Vocas MB350 and Chrosziel products I've used. I can see a few places where an Arri may be more solidly built. But, look at the price.

Tobias - washers - thanks!
I had to use my bat-strength to tighten the box to the arm. But everything else is stellar!

Ryan - thanks for the filter set back-up. I bought them blind.

No flakes, no dirt in my unit. I think it's an awesome buy, with case.

I ordered a iM2450 Stormcase for it today.

I've been looking at getting a storm case for my matte box as well- let me know how this one works out for you. (I have storm cases for other gear and like them a lot.) I've been trying to figure out which one would fit the matte box the best, and it looks like this may be the one...

The problem is I haven't used one with cube foam yet. But according to it's measurements it should hold it with the side rails and the side wing flags attached. With still enough room for the eye-brow and some gimmicks.

I will post a picture.

Great, I would love to see a picture. I was planning on using the foam that came with the matte box as it is already cut for it. It sounds like you are going to cut your own?

Hi Ryan

No, I don't. Just the pick and plug foam. What I dislike on the RR foam is that the siderails are stored seperatly. Seems that the case is already in Cologne, ordered it on bhphotovideo yesterday. This guys are fast.

What do you mean - only 2 stages?! :sarcasm:

On a serious note though - we really need those additional stages. We put this together using our second MB...
