  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 17...

Stewart, why not scale 4k down to 2k and record so the compressors can handle the load?

No CPU power to scale in realtime?

well that's 20k for more framerates at full fov j don't have.
5k for more framerates at full fov sure. 10k? Maybe...

Its just the fact everytime I shoot I need it....;(

Everyone always want's something more rather than appreciating what they have. I am continuously amazed that I can shoot 4k at 24p for less than it cost to buy my car!!! I few years back I spent 4 times that on an F900. What 4k full frame camera would I be shooting with today if red didn't exist?

I am continuously amazed by the lack of perspective. Sure I'd love 4k at 100fps right now but get real, we're already pushing the envelope at 24fps.

BTW, A couple of shots of mine were slowed down using the Foundry tools to double the frame rate and looked fantastic. I'd definitely recommend testing that path out.

 Oh... Wow... Obin just brought up 2K scaled again. I'm getting outta here before the fit hits the shan.

Stu - did You just slip a hint on a unpublished EPIC's spec?

The specs say 1-100 FPS & 5K - but just like it was with Red One - not in the same sentence...

So we can safely assume EPIC will deliver at least 4K @ 60+ FPS?

Edit:

Is it safe to assume the 1-100 FPS does indeed refer to 5K?

Because if it was referring to the maximum specs, but at lower resolutions - it would be actually slower the Red One with 120 FPS at 2K...
If indeed EPIC supported 100 FPS at 5K, we could expect about 180 FPS at 4K, 320 FPS at 3K and 640 FPS at 2K... :innocent:
The only downside is that we would need to shoot through coke-bottle bottom to get a decent wide at 2K, but this should be out-weighted with the fact that we could shoot naked martian chicks running on Mars at 640 FPS with the RED 300 mm lens... :)

Edit 2:

The more I think about it - the more I like Scarlet...
(This is not to say I won't get Epic when it comes out...)

Stuart, can we expect any higher frame rates at 4k from red one ? maybe something in the 40s ?
Aloha

It is really fun to buy a camera that improves (at no extra cost) every month or so. If I were an owner (I am), I would be smiling at every firmware upgrade.

Jim

This is the post that irritated me, so everyone who defended Red from my apparent attack (?), but didn't seem to understand what I said prior, or the reason behind it, wasted their time with futile replys. thanks goon squad.. So I'll illuminate again...

"(at no extra cost)" seems to imply that Red could/should charge for updates if they wanted to (but through sheer kindness or whatever, haven't), and that that policy would be perfectly reasonable, at least for some other unmentioned/implied company, no doubt, otherwise why point it out?
This is what irritated me (a little bit), Jims apparent need to remind us how good we've got it, and if we disagree no doubt we're spoilt and he'll run off into the hills to ponder the greed of men... still, I'll decide for myself thanks. Meanwhile I'll beta test any new functions for the Epicly priced "upgrade" for the R1, and any buggy software, totally for free..althought Ive spent £40000 etc

The R1 and Epic scenario reminds me of when Adobe Premiere (professional video editing) was complimented by Premiere Pro, the choice for real professionals, but not the fools that bought our other pro editing product (which was available at the same time).. anyway, Ill be much more receptive when I recieve 24bit audio, or was that not in the spec. either?

Ronx, your comment is confusing me. Are you implying that you'd be happier if they did charge for upgrades that weren't on the original spec sheet as long as the original specs are met?

I stopped fussing over the specs after the many times we'd heard "specs change, count on it" or whatever that quote was that we heard a thousand times back in the day.

You have a point there. But, as always, buyer beware.

So what do you believe that you are owed to complete your RED-ONE functionality / experience?

BTW, you already have a 24 bit audio system in your RED-ONE. There are other reasons for that hardware upgrade.

Don't worry about you're confusion, i was on one last night, but only wanted to post once. Perhaps I read too much into simple words, but words are all we have on a forum. Firmware upgrades should be free in my opinion, for many reasons, that was my point. If something is free, but you keep being reminded of the fact, psychologically, its no longer free (especially if you're trusting and investing in them).
Yes, new functions take time and hence money to develop, but hey, Red are a new company (relatively, "who knew nothing until recently..etc") and nearly every piece of code they get working/improve strengthens their brand going forward (especially when you consider codec stability, pretty basic stuff), so I don't think the people who waited two years or longer, paid a deposit, then paid in full, put up with delays and accepted compromises, need to be reminded that the updates are free ($17,000), of course they are, Red wants to be dangerous, and the biggest improvements will come from hardware upgrades that everyone will be paying for, something I and others have a proven record in.
I have used my camera about three times since I got it (at least six weeks ago, I think) and artifacts were present in two of the three test shots I took (b15 and previous early b16, no trees), but they're acceptable to me, they're not too terrible (in dark areas, but visually lossy) and the b16 updates were free at least (ive updated two times since), so hopefully things have improved, although I've not actually shot with the release b16 yet..

ps, on Sunday 24th August 2008, I "need" (not "want") that Red Raid from my order (which I wasn't warned about, until I opened the box!), I can't miss another historic event because of this, and this is a BIG one, its starting to cost me now and I don't want to beg, so please...

Is it just me or has this thread turned a little bipolar?

This buyer is happy, I'd actually be upset if someone thought otherwise. I guess I'm one of the people who has stepped out of their usual financial situation and into a less comfortable one because I have faith in the R1 as a professional, reliable camera. I think it is now, with the audio fix (which I didn't know about last night, until I'd posted!) and the kind of rock solid stability that only time can mature, it will be unquestionably that. Lets not rush to declare its finished though

I didn't say i was owed anything? This is what I hate about Reduser. I don't believe the camera is finished quite yet, and thus talk of things being free is irrelevant. But, if you insist, and i had to create a wish list:

- Right now, a Red Raid would be very useful, otherwise i can't use the camera, or a heads-up from the bomb squad so I could have delayed delivery (and thus debt repayments), until I could use the camera.
- Also, audio output from Redcine, eventually, would be nice.
- Continued development of Redcine, until its stable on a PC/Mac whatever video card brand you use.
- Continued optimization of the codec, for free, until Red says its finished and its stable as an eight leg table (this takes time)
- Cool marketing, the quieter kind, where the product speaks for itself through word of mouth , with loyal users (like me), who don't feel like they're being censored by a fanboy mob when they comment on a forum, although I've been guilty of that sin
- Long term codec support, for those of us who will be hoping to archive R3Ds across a decade

As for 24bit audio, ha ha ha, yes I guess I am owed a board swap so that its performance delivers better than 16bit quality, with less noise and with phantom power working? But mostly, I think Red owe that upgrade to themselves, because its s*it for the brand as it is. And its excellent you have information about the specific hardware problem, care to share?
Carrying a seperate audio recording system isn't an option for me, but I suppose I could have taped a mini-dat recorder to the side of the camera...
I was commenting on Jim's comment actually, last night, I did quote it and explain my reasons (several times), wasn't attacking, but thanks for defending him/Red from me anyway. If reading those posts doesn't help, give up!

I agree... this RED Drive wait is getting ridiculous.. almost 3 months now... to put it in perspective that's 3 months on top of all the delays waiting for the camera/EVF. Even the stuff we ordered from AbelCine is taking forever (will soon be a month) to arrive. I guess it's an industry thing. By the time all the gear finally arrives then we'll have to ship it off for the pin/audio update. Heck I guess the only consolation will be having Build 17 to play with.

O.K noted. Thanks for that.

Who's on first base?

Shot to CF in back garden today in late afternoon and got codec yuk (bands of strange dithering, normally in shadow), but on a beige plant pot, high contrast random jitter, b16 (latest). Someone needs to tell me where I can retrieve log files from ie, are they the files in the root of the cf? which ones?
I've used the camera "literally" about five times. I've updated it nearly as many times as I've pressed record, but I think when I do get a Raid, Red is gunna start recieving a healthy stream of log files to help with that FREE codec optimization. Think I'll go see if a black shading gets rid of that high contrast green noise I see when the lens cap is on. images are beautiful, but i still think there needs to be every effort made to increase codec robustness, and i appreciate the huge efforts already made.
Could do with a Raid before Sunday 24th or I'm gunna miss an important historical event in the north of england, and probably end up crying. ive never had the chance to use rc36 either, its getting a little annoying now.

Who's on first base?

that'll be me no doubt!

ps, ive been a little grumpy all week, do you mind if I punch your avatars face :)

here's some b16 codec yuk, purplish dithering around the mouth and jaw areas, not too bad, but I'll be reporting worse stuff I saw today in another shot. Remember to click to see full res. 4k
