  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic render...

how about .... Back panel removable / Wi-Fi enabled... but if you want, you can buy an additional back panel remote.

This also creates an easy way to replace damaged controls.

I also like the idea of releasing a full featured WiFi app that runs on PC and Mac.

Modular is good. :)

The camera department reacts with horror and despair...

can you explain? While I doubt this is a final version, it seems it is moving in the right direction...

One word Brook: sheep

If you want to maintain the status quo, go get a 235.
If you want the future, go get an Epic. 20 years of
shooting on Arri and the whole vacuum formed anti
ergo design is played out.

I want my Epic now!

Hmmmm

I find it to be a step in the right direction. Everything has now to do how you balance your batteries etc. What will it be like with the ARRI base plate on?

Lens height seems to be in the same level as A 235.

There's a nice cut out in the back (it maybe stops a little early since the xlr ports (EDIT: power port and drive connector) are dipping down a little, but otherwise).

Question is will we be able to keep that cut out with accessories? and if ports are connected?

The BNC ports are placed nicely with a 30 degree angle and they're covered nicely.

The menu buttons on the back I can live with if we get a nice and neat (very thin) RCU that can be positioned anywhere, so the AC can have complete control. Maybe have it as a flat device so you keep it slim against the cam on the operator side. You can then connect a knob to it for speed ramping etc so you'll have that as well.

That it's a square design on the top doesn't do so much to me and I guess it needs to follow RED a little to make it modular with RED accessories.

Ohh I'd like to ad one thing - plugs to plug the ports that's not being used.

Looks like they finally got the connectors right, but the info display is still in the wrong place (although we haven't seen a render of the smart side of the camera yet!!!).

I would be very pleased if the left-side render showed pretty much what we see now on the back of the camera. Nothing like walking all the way around the camera operator when you need to change something. (Some of those guys are really wide! :-) )

I like the addition of some flat surfaces - we definitely need places to velcro things.

Please consider adding an accelerometer to add real-time camera angle info to the metadata.

I don't see the iPhone charger slot (USB port) any more. Is it gone?

I know some people will hate me for saying this....to start with, I really think that we should loose sound with the Epic and if we need to have it. Keep mini XLR so you can do the ports the same as you've done with the BNC.

Also consider to cover the RED LCD and EVF connectors that way.

Its a step in the right direction. But I would still like to push for operator side
controls with a sliding panel to hide them when not in use and use the back
space for direct connection of battery.

From following Brook's attitude over the last week.. I am convinced EPIC is not a camera that he will be happy with, and that's ok.

I'm just about back in from lunch at this point, so I won't be able to put the kind of time and focus into my post that I want to until I'm home for the night. I can tell you that when the thread opened and the whole camera department was there, we stood agape for about 20 seconds before Matt managed to say "well, the BNCs are better I guess."

OK... but I just would hope to see a bit more respect in your next post, as I found the last one a tad childish.

Please don't take this to be personal, it just struck me odd to see this type of post from one of REDUser's moderators.

Well he has spent numerous nights writing about it hahahahha

I don't think it's a bad start. i didn't expect for it to change drastically, but if we take out the rib cage structure, make it smooth instead and of course implement all my other suggestions. I think it can be a very nice little cam.

How old is Brook? 19?

There is a big difference between those of us that have been around the industry for 10s of years and those that are green. It's a small world out there and being a punk smart ass acting like hot shit will only get you so far before it backfires in your face.

It's strange because normally it's the kids that embrace new ideas and not us cranky old farts.

.."well, the BNCs are better I guess."
milk squirting out of my nose..chuckle..don't be so harsh to brook..he had high hopes (me too) more of his suggestions would make it into the new design...still he shows a great sense of humor :)

No worries. I understand the gist of the situation. I have had a lot of experience doing beta testing and feature development over the years.

And something I learned along the way was that critiquing is a very delicate art, which allows little room for pushing people's buttons. I realize many of us have put a lot of time into research and feedback over the past several months, but we must keep proper perspective and continue to go about this process with respect and good nature.

This is a rare opportunity we all have here, and I would hate to see it disappear.

Anyway, how about we get back to the topic at hand?
