  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Is this upgradeable?

Antenna screws into an RPSMA bulkhead connector, and is removable. This is pretty much the standard connector and frequency range of 802.11. So there are lots of options ranging from mounting the antenna somewhere other than on the mount, to using different antennas with a longer range (half and full wave).

The are two LEMOs with RS232 and power output, for knobs and such. We could easily offer a higher power, or other protocol, radio to plug into this port. This is how Curt's controls will need to hook in, as they are ZigBee.

Lots of options here. I don't know if anyone remembers the reason for the bluetooth... The radio, RPSMA connector, and antenna cost less than a mating pair of LEMOs, and laptops dn't seem to hae serial ports any more. This was first put there as a way to upgrade software without the camera in the loop.

Remote control and data display are just a bonus.

If anybody is planning on IPhone or Palm applications for data display, please check in with me so we can get you protocol information.

Got my Birger email... so happy! It might ship on my birthday!

Oh man, that would be awesome! Maybe I'll take another look at that iPhone SDK...

EDIT: Actually, I remember reading when the iPhone was first released that the Bluetooth would basically only work with Apple's hands-free headset. Does anyone know if it can be accessed by third-party apps or devices now in version 2?

Erik did mention that the connector is standard 802.11 - so maybe there is a chance to get a custom WiFi interface for the mount? This would be actually preferred to Bluetooth and solve the iPhone problem (yes, for now only Apple has access to the BT functionality)... Is this doable Erik?

Really? Than why is there so much bluetooth headsets for the iPhone reviewed by iLounge (about 14)? And that include the original one...

We are talking about the iPhone SDK. Those accessories suppliers don't need the SDK. They just need to make their stuff compliant with Apple specs and guidelines. No special SW is required - hence they don't need to access the BT functionality in the iPhone SDK... :)

Well, not in the post you were replying to (the edit part, anyway), but I missed the SDK part. I see what you're talking about, a pitty, really.

Bluetooth - SPP profile. I mentioned that 802.11 antennas and such could be used, not that it was 802.11. Sorry for confusing things.

I got the email from birger that they are ready to ship and I was wondering if the RED warranty is still good if I install the Birger Mount for EOS Lenses?

It won't void the warranty, but if you damage anything while installing the mount (or if the mount causes damage after it's been installed) then the damages won't be covered by Red's warranty. So install it with care.

wonder who will be the first to post some footage. anyone have any solution for follow focus? should I buy a Red Rock FF? any luck with the gears mounting them to lenses?

Where's the official announcement?

Where's the official announcement?

Quoth Jarred:

At this point we are prepared to move forward with this.. I am pleased to announce that the Birger mount will not void the global camera warranty with the modifications Erik has done.

Note though.. that any parts damaged from a potential electronic malfunction directly caused by the mount will not be covered.. and things like breaking the adjustable PL of the mount on removal/installation will not be covered ( since it never was designed to be removed)

Because of the removal of the adjustable section is required, the Birger mount will not be RED Certified, but I think alot of you will be happy with the fact that it does not void your global camera warranty.

Since this is a camera for filmmakers, not for engineers, I think. I'd like to know where normal people like me, where can we proceed with the task?

I mean swapping mounts (Red PL to Birger mount) without problems with the warranty.

I'd ask around to local companies that rent the Red - if you have any. The procedure to change mounts doesn't look any more complicated than some of the things I've done to my computer - although, I've never owned a $17,000 computer, until now.:sarcasm:

Right. Plus, as said, not every Red / Birger owner is geek or engineer as a few of you. Therefore, I'd like to know where can I swap the mounts without any problem as far as the warranty concerns. Can I order it from Birger? From Red?

Any help?

ok ...

ok ...

Having received THE email ... I'm keen to understand what works today ?

Am I correct in assuming that the aperture control DOES work (the 3 buttons on the side) ? I assume there is no 'display' of the chosen aperture and one has to make a mental note of the number of clicks made ... is it 1/2 stop or 1/3 stop increments at the moment ?

Is there a PDF for the mount (usage) other than the one I've seen for the installation ? Will this (these) be made available via the Birger site as more functionality is introduced / focus controls are released, etc ...
In future, what IS the process of upgrading the firmware for the mount (as and when patches/releases become available); can these be applied in the field (as for the RED One) ?

Finally, as somebody else has commented ... is there a reason that NO footage has been made available (for those already ! in possession of the Birger mount) ?

Cheers ...
