  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

great info - however a video tutorial on how to install the mount would be better - paying particular detail on how to avoid pinching the icable

If my order was fast tracked, i would be more than happy to do this...

That's great info Erik. Thanks.

Any idea on a rough guesstimate for releasing the Nikon version?

Alright.. i just received the biggest Hershey bars i have ever seen in my life...

I believe those are the California Earthquake Resistance Hershey bars, Jarred. Guaranteed not to crack during an earthquake measuring up to 5.8 on the Richter scale. Yeah, low, but if it's higher than that, you'd need much more than a big bar of chocolate.

rather you would be making your own bars of chocolate in an earthquake bigger than that

Go Birger! I want one! [to stay on topic]

Erik, is there a plan for longer (then 18") cable between the mount and the knob?

Jarred - ditto - I remember You mentioning longer cables for LCD/Red-Drive...

What I am interested in is remote situations (such as helicopter) where i could control remotely the camera and lens mounted under the nose in gyro-mount, while monitoring and recording the footage inside the heli...

What can be done? What is the max distance for the LCD, Drive and the "Birger-Knob"?

We sell 10 foot LCD/EVF cables in the red.com store. We get batches of longer drive cables in from time to time but they dont last very long.

If you're just joining us, you might not know that bluetooth wireless is built into the mount and a wireless pda type remote which will control both iris and focus has been announced by Erik. It was initially included as an incentive to the original pre order group. In addition to Erik's remote, someone else on the board posted a prototype of a wired remote for a birger canon mount.

also, for wireless 720 video monitoring, check out this post:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=262486#post262486

and of course there's the 16gb cards coming down the pipeline and who knows about 32gb.... you might not need to run any wires at all.

Thanks Jared, I saw the LCD cable, but couldn't find the drive cable. How long do they get? Can they match the 10' of the LCD?

Maxwax - thanks for the link - it does look great, however (for me) there are two problems:

A) At $6K just for the "link" (I still need the monitor) - it is little too steep for me... I am not saying it is expensive - looks like a good value product, I am just used to work with more "restricted" budgets...

B) I will have a hard time convincing my Robinson pilot to allow anything wireless anywhere near the helipad, let alone into to the chopper while is in the air... :)

Also the hourly charge for the helicopter is almost always about 75% of the total cost for me - so I feel a lot safer with old-fashioned wired connections...

Thanks anyway...

Peter :)

The link can easily go out to a couple of hundred feet. At longer distances you might need to slow down the communication rate, which is easy to do. Make your own cables, hire someone, or have us do it for you. We charge $125 + $2/foot. Pinout will be available when the knobs ship.

Thanks Erik! That is a great news. All I need now is Jarred to confirm that the drive cable can go to 10' and I have nice solution to all my remote applications...

BTW: Erik - where do I place an order and by when I have to do so in order to get it before September ends...?

Probably should get that order in now. We are looking at four weeks for new orders right now. Who knows what will happen once more people have had a chance to play... There is a link to the order form and assembly instructions on our homepage. We will get more information out next week.

System is basically in four pieces:
  1. Smart Lens Mount (Nikon, Canon, FourThirds) $900/ea
  2. RED Camera Adapter (includes collimation, 3x LEMO, BlueTooth Radio and Antenna) $300/ea
  3. Electronic Encoder/Knob (removable railmount/knob, for integration into undwerwater housing) $300/ea
  4. Cable (18", need one between Camera/Adapter, and one between Adapter/Knob) $75/ea

If you want to switch between Canon and Nikon, you only need to add the other $900 Nikon Smart Lens Mount, and adjust your collimation number to the one that you figure out for that other mount.

Erik--

My Birger Nikon Smart Lens Mount order is among the first handful of orders. I have not contacted you since January and have not posted here in months.

The above quote is the first time I can remember you mentioning a Nikon Birger Smart Lens Mount in your posts for nearly as long.

I received an email in the Birger re-confirmation email blitz a month or two ago and answered by saying that I wanted to remain in line for a Nikon mount and asked to wait to complete payment until the Nikon mount was at least on the horizon, since it had not been mentioned by you for so long.

With this last communique, it appears that the Nikon mount is still planned and on its way.

Can you give us any estimate of how the arrival of the Nikon mount fits into your delivery plans vis a vis shipments of the Canon mount and when you will be requesting a completion of payment for the mount?

It was about a year ago that I realized what you were planning on delivering in a smart mount, and it was this realization that ultimately convinced me to go forward with my RED ONE order. I can't wait to give you my money, order up a new batch of Nikon G AFS zoom lenses and receive my mount!

Bill
