16GB for B16...

I suppose the RedRam will become pretty much obsolete with such a card, given the not-so-impressive performance of silicon-based 'hard-disks' in Apple's Air ?

So it is the time (soon) for those that waited to decide whether they like what they see to finish the deal or step aside so those behind them in line can step up. This isn't hardball, it is just fair. I always say that I try our policies out on myself to see if they seem right... as if I were the customer (I am, actually). This seems more than fair to me.

Jim

With all due respect, If someone is slow in taking delivery it is probably because they have financial or other problem. May be they need to wait for a Birger mount or something else for their purpose. If they want their money back thay can get it anytime. So what is the harm in keeping them in the que. They put the deposit down because they are interested. There is no harm in keeping those slow deciders in que. Let them take their own time to decide.

As far as quality is concerned, RED was ready before release 16. I do not think anybody doubt the usefulness of RED. Eventhough it would be nice to have birger mounts and other options freely available with camera body.

There is simply no alternative to RED anywhere anyway. Dalsa and SI are not even answering their phones or e-mails. Sony F35 is out of range for most people. Panasonic / Canon does not make a comparable camera. Panavision/ARRI are rental only and cost $4500+/week. So customers have no place to go other than RED.

In this circumstance, it is only fair to keep those slow deciders in Que until they are able to fulfill their dream. In the meanwhile you can keep selling the available cameras to the remaining customers. That is my humble opinion.

I am not criticising or pretending to know how to run your business. I always standup for the underdog. That is all. I know RED is the dream of many people who cannot immediately afford to buy RED + Lenses + accessories etc. ($47K+).

As Jim said, Red is a digital cinema company, not a bank. They should concentrate on churning out mind boggling phantastic electronic cinema gear, not keeping track of their customer's financial situations. Besides, those fence-sitters can (and did) mess up the delivery schedule.

It's not like you didn't have time to decide, sort out the finances, etc. Red can hardly be held accountable for the Birger delays (which btw start shipping now, it seems, hallelujah).

If you are undecided, you can just get your deposit back, and make a new pre-order. That way you get another couple of months to make up your mind/get your financing sorted out.

Finally! That's wicked! :)
Price is a bit high but I guess it can't be helped if they're custom built. Hopefully it'll go down in a bit.

Huh? ... Well, how much is a 1000 foot roll of 35mm movie film?
Which you can only use once.
Plus there is the processing cost, getting it to the lab and so on.
Plus prices are going up 20% in the near future.
You guys are so funny some times.

Why are you comparing to a 1000 foot roll of 35mm film? Apples and oranges. We are talking about electronics here. The rules have changed.
As I said, seeing that this is a custom design, the price probably couldn't be lower, and this has since been confirmed by Jim. Where's the problem? :)

The good News are not stopping from RED at the moment. Great times are coming up. Please don't stop with this good work. It is impressive to see the growing of the revolution. Thanks guys !

There is a few PCI-express to CF readers out there that are blazingly fast. We all use Lexar or Sandisk Firewire 800 UDMA capable readers at RED. USB, to our tests ( and we are all in the mac world ) is always the slowest option.

Can you give a link to one of the blazingly fast PCI-e to CF readers that you recommend for these new 16GB cards? Sounds great. Also, is there any ExpressCard to CF readers that are fast, that could be used in a laptop? Thanks....

plus he's forgetting about archival costs that are built into film. that costs much more than the original acquisition medium.

Why would you want to sell your 8GB cards? Still useful to shoot on, just more media to have that doesn't take much space. Resale value? Hmmm... Brand New Lexar 300X 8GB cards are < $80 after rebates these days... Just sayin'

I use my 8GB cards in both my RED and my DSLR. All good, not selling.

I'm very happy RED decided to take matters into its own hands and get these 16GB cards made. since it seems card makers where happy to continue fibbing about the true speeds of their cards. ROLL on 32 and 64gb cards. the holy grail for me is 1 hour on a CF Card.

Jim any chance you guys will make a dual card reader instead of the single one we have. the ability to roll over automatically from one card to another without stopping is a great feature in the hvx200 and would be equally as great on the RED ONE. I know epic and scarlet will be dual from day one.

I know the RED Drive allows 2 hours , but thats not appropriate to all situations

Yeah, I'd second this. Shouldn't be too hard to do, given that the CF-card module is a separate entity. Should be user changeable.

Regards,

Uli

Maybe I misunderstood- I thought Jim said that only the 16GB cards would work with build 16?

Talking of firewire/UDMA card readers, is the Lexar Professional UDMA Firewire 800 CF Reader (part no. RW034-001) one you can recommend?

Best Buy has them currently for 49.99 USD. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8337613&type=product&id=1175389460846

We had / have the Lexar Pro FW800 reader, and I dunno if anyone else had this problem, but we already "lost a soldier" when 1, yes just 1, pin bent on the inside of the reader, and now (after testing on an Extreme II card, n oway am i testing on a RED card), it doesn't read the data off the cards. It's a great reader, wit hgreat speed, but has anyone else run into this problem? I mean for $50 for a CF only reader, I feel like the thing should be taking a CF card ever 5 mins without a problem. Maybe I am just spoiled with red's durability:whistling: .

Uh... Yeah... Please send me a PM and I'll give you instructions on where you can send your current 8GB cards for recycling. :usd:
