  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE Shooting in Berlin, Germay - First clips from "Cold Storage" (Working Title)

Also you should know this that QT H.264 is the highest and the best movie trailer standard in the world.

H.264 compression is generally considered to be twice as effective as MPEG-2 for the same bandwidth. Also, please note that H.264 is just video, and does not cover audio.

Apples vs. Windows :) .

Bilnd vs. Enlightened :) .

People should finally know to use the technology or give up :) .

Just boring :) .

Looks really good, what's the budget for this? Smells independent, but independent in the way it is today: really good looking :)

And our musician and sound designer wants to know if you like the sound track...
Very nice. Worked for me. :)

The only thing that stood out was when they entered the bunker and the cement debris was falling and it was being stepped on... it sounded too-high pitched to me... more "glass-like" then cement and stone rubble.

The visuals were great too. One note: the red eyes at the end flickered. Was that on purpose or something else? If so, it felt more like a "digital" or "electronic" flicker then something organic. The only thing that felt out of place to me. Just my 2 cents. Hope that helps a little. :)

This was very inspiring knowing that this was shot with the Red camera. To me, some of the best footage to date.

Thanks, its really "independent"!

I guess the budget is like some percent of expensive US block busters (better leave that answer to the producer... Carl? Where are you :)???).

Happy to match your taste here!

Point taken on the sound. I pass it on to the sound designer. Final does never mean finished, just released :)

Yep, it was an inspiring situation to produce this as well. No more than 72 hours from arrival of the camera until the first takes...

Just in time, and this kind of results. My hat down for the entire team, very pleasant work and amazing results.

Axel,

Its both sofisticated and disturbing as in certain parts of "The Shining"...
I felt every step of the way attention was payed to weaving an undercurrent of psycological triggers that speak to the unconcious...
I like the poetic relationships and the dynamic between picture and sound design...Intuitive yet deliberately calibrated to evoke thought and emotion in us the viewers...
Not just simple suspence, there is something more, something hidden there in the very atmosphere of this "Place-Space"...

Great work to the sound department for daring to find something new within this very strick genre...Its unusual and works, thats all that counts.

Well Done.

Hi Axel, I am here!
Of course this is an independent production. Finding money through the usual fund system in Germany will be quite difficult, so we are looking for other possibilities. The Trailer is NOT a trailer it's a TEASER, with a couple of extras walking through the picture. We wanted to show what atomsphere we can create and how the film will look. You can show people storyboards and scripts in the end you sell this kind of genre film on a teaser like this.

Hi Carl,

welcome on the board :)

So now I can keep track on the tech part only, thanks!

Axel

im just read all the treads, and first of all, congrats that awesome what u did, i like the indie feeling, the pitch seem really nice, and we also want to make a "teaser" to find some funds for our movie.
What really stunme was the fact for what i have read that u don't make many test of the workflow with the RED.
What kind of workflow did u use?

Hi Axel,

Fantastic looking work. Can I ask you what torches you used? They look so bright.

Antony

Hi Antony,

sorry for answering late, but monitoring this forum is a bit like maintaining a family with thousands of kids...

We used standart torches but modified with I think 50 Watt light bulbs. So they burn. The rest of the effect is being a combination of dust and fog, and the simple way of RED ONE's exposure. Once you have the latitude you are close to do the effect...

Axel

Really great stuff, a little creepy for my stile :) but great nonetheless.

ciao

Hey Ketch,

what I find creepy is your Avatar!

Really outstanding and remarkable. I wonder if you look the same :)

Well, we did not much tests as the entire project itself was the test :)

And there was not much time, because the camera came in late and needed to be rigged up before shooting, so time for tests was minimal to none. So it was picking up at the airport, unpacking at the grip rental house (MBF in Frankfurt, greetings!), rigging up, doing some basic usage tests (but no workflow, just camera handling) and downloaded a few clips before the team went off for the shooting. We know it will work, one way or another. We were prepared to solve problems. We do that every day, though...

In fact, we keep the rule: You learn always best on real jobs. So we did. Bloody noses here and there, when you live on the bleeding edge of technology. We are used to it, we are tech problem junkies :)

We shot in 16:9 4K. My bad, back then only 2:1 was editable in FCP. So we bulk transcoded 2 hours of footage into Harris/Leitch .LTV format for VelocityHD editing and finishing. Went out fine. But is a bit time consuming upfront.

Today we mostly rely on editing in FCP (at least a rough edit or pre-selection of takes), then convert selected takes for further effects processing, compositing, grading, finishing. We have various different workflows in place, depending on the project, customer needs and budget. Some want AVID, they get AVID. Some want FCP, they get FCP. Some want DPX, here we go. Its the flexibility, that is our job.

We use SpeedGradeDI on the grading side and its a beast with RAW footage.

Cheers,
Axel
