I want to thank everyone who came out for the event last night. It was a great time. We were treated to some great presentations, including a tour de force by Mike Seymour from fxphd. Mike really did a good job of illustrating the workflow and he gave the crowd some good laughs too. All I can say is look into those courses over at fxphd. If last night was any indication, these guys know their stuff and know how to teach it.
Tom Burns gave us a look at what he terms "old school" approach to how they are dealing with RED, basically treating it like a film workflow. He emphasized that you have to make sure sure your metadata's integrity is maintained throughout the entire post process.
David Newman of Cineform gave us some insight into what they are doing with Cineform and 4K workflow. This was a good indication that once the SDK is released, there are going to be many tools developed to address all kinds of workflow needs.
Ian Bloom talked about Crimson Workflow. This was interesting because Ian is first and foremost a DP but created tools to help him use the RED footage the way he wanted to. But Ian stressed that he is a just a "dude" not a company with full support. So, you have to keep that in mind if you buy the product. Even though he's not a software company, I think this is a tool that will still help a lot of people, and clearly people have appreciated the effort as was indicated by the response Ian got last night.
Lucas Wilson from Assimilate discussed the Scratch workflow and the various solutions/modules they offer. He talked about the new Scratch Cine which is essentially a pre-post tool used to prepare R3D files for the post production process. Lucas addressed pricing for the various products.
Jerry Hofmann gave us a fun look into RED workflow from his perspective as an editor and said that he has seen 4 revolutions in this industry in his 35 years in the biz. 3/4" tape which allowed corporate video to move away from 16mm and expanded that industry exponentially, Avid, DV and Final Cut Pro, and now RED. Jerry said that after working with RED footage, he never wants to work with regular video again. H has been so impressed with the footage that it is hard to go back. He also discussed the Log and Transfer plug-in and Ted Schilowitz jumped up and announced they had posted it for download as a beta plug-in. Everyone seemed pretty excited about that. I've tried it and it works.
Steve Gibby and Graeme Nattress joined us for the interactive portion of the event which gave the audience a chance to ask some questions.
We had a great raffle. We gave away an Element Technica breakout box and viewfinder mount, a Toys4Red panel, Monstercine's cool mounting gadgets, best buy gift cards care of Globalstor, gift certificate from Doug Underdahl of Long Valley Equipment towards purchase of gear, gift certificate towards purchase or rental of Aqua Video's underwater housing, Birns & Sawyer gave away director's vewfinder and other goodies, a copy of Red Lightning's logging application for RED footage, and loads of T-shirts and hats
I want to thank everyone who helped sponsor the event.
