  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Who wants a nikon mount asap?

I bought one of the $20 adapters (except it cost me $35 or so; look on ebay). It works fine and I've taken a lot of photos with it and my Digital Rebel and they look very sharp around f2.8-f4, probably sharp enough to resolve 4k.

BUT the adapter is not very well calibrated and the focus seems to go a bit past infinity until it's just a little out of focus no matter what if you focus on infinity.... I'm not really sure. But it's definitely not as ideal a solution as a normal nikon mount because it's not perfectly calibrated and not quite as strong so I wouldn't put a huge lens on it. I'm not sure, though; maybe I'm just focusing wrong.

Got my hands on a RED today.

Got my hands on a RED today.

John Valen stepped up and brought me a RED today, and I got started on a dumb Nikon mount. Now that I've done this, I'm sure that RED will start shipping their own Nikon mounts immediately.

But if they don't, I should have Nikon mounts for sale for the RED in a few weeks.

Also, I must say the build quality on this camera is fabulous, and I want one.

Excellent news Doug!
I'm still waiting on my wire transfer to clear and for the cameras to ship, sorry I couldn't help out more!

Keep us in the loop with regards to price and availability, and dare I say it... reservations for your mount?

Working on prototype now. My goal is to have them ready to go out the door in about three weeks.

Nikon, contax/yashica zeiss, M42 on Birger EOS confirmed by AquaVideoRed206

Nikon, contax/yashica zeiss, M42 on Birger EOS confirmed by AquaVideoRed206

Obin,

Is this a confirmed fact? I have so many Nikons, that this will make my day if true. I called Birger and they coudn't confirm this, so in order for me to place an order from them I would like to have this squared. Also, can you point me to where I can buy the $20.00 adapter?

Thanks!

Luis I have a Nikon 50mm 1.8 Nikon Lens Series E (standard Nikon mount - I also use it on an N8008 Nikon) that I have used on the Birger EOS mount with an adapter I bought on Ebay for about $20.

Also have used my Contax/Yashica mount Zeiss 300mm with $20 ebay adapter to shoot the STS122 shuttle launch. Also have a 50mm F1.4 Zeiss C/y mount that works as well. Contax/Yashica mount is a good way to get top notch used Zeiss glass at half or less of the price of the equivalent ZF lens in Nikon mount. They have nice long focus throws and they focus in the proper (for cine people) direction so no reversing gears needed..

Also have mounted a 50mm F1.4 Pentax Super Multicoated Takumar on the EOS adapter with an M42 to EOS adapter. Came off my dad's Honeywell pentax from the 60s - pretty darn sharp, not quite as snappy as the Zeiss but certainly workable and the adapter turns it from a pain in the butt screw mount to a nice bayonet.

I bought the Zeiss 50 f1.4 as a low light prime and as a manual backup in case the birger smarts were to fail due to a broken connector or something.

Aqua,

Thanks for the comprehensive reply.

Douglas,

Can it be ready in two weeks? Estimated price? Please, advise.

I love my Super Takumars!

Nicely done Doug. I'm desperate for a Nikon mount to support my primes and zooms especially purchased for the RED One.

You might consider also making a video about setting back focus with a zoom.

best,

Michael

I am SOOOOOOOOOO looking forward to that Underdahl mount! Indeed, since RED has positively dropped the ball on this one, I suggest that EVERYONE who is looking for a dumb Nikon mount buy Doug's to support his efforts on our behalf.

But, I did spell it correctly! Vallon.

Hey, thanks John for letting me take your camera apart. Now everyone will want to see footage from your cam with Nikon glass, ya know!

Doug

Come on, Chas. . . come on everyone. . . let's support (with our wallets) the great hard work that has finally given us a quality Nikon mount! Here's to the Underdahl mount!

Stephen

thanx Douglas for both videos! Very interesting
