  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

I bait Birger's mount ships before you have your RED in your hands ?
OK ?

I actually don't mind if I have my Birger mount in july. I have some pl mount lenses to use with my RED. The problem has been stated by many customers already. Now if Birger came on this board and gave us a bit of confidence then that would be awesome.

Though honestly Leon why do you think it is your job to try to give Birgers customers confidence?

Because I am fed up to read complaints !
And patience was tought to me by our friend Mr.Akube. It's an old story !

maybe you should be as patient with peoples complaints as you are with birgers pr policies.

You don't make that mount, do you ?
if you do and if it works, i'll be very very patient and gratefullll,
really, not many competitors to make such work ??? why ?

One last detail, it is very true, you are right,
I will not recommend nor hire him as a PR !

But as a rare obstinate species of worker, yes !

Just thought I would offer a quick update...

My loaner camera went back to RED last night. AquaVideo is going to send us his camera again, if RED does not get one back to us when we need it early next week.

Because a reference plate needs to be placed on the camera to hold the shims, and to get to an interchangeable mount system - we are going to adapt our existing product to the RED camera, rather than come up with something all new. This will not result in the loss of any promised features. Please see attached picture of the prototype (which is missing its bluetooth antenna).

There are three lemo connectors coming out of the adapter plate, which also includes a bluetooth radio. The cable that is plugged in goes to the camera for power and communication. The connector above it allows for a wired connection to the remote control, which if plugged in, will disable the radio. The connector below is for the accessories, such as knobs and zoom motor.

We had a break through on the collimation of back focus. We can use a known lens that most people are likely to have access to (i.e. 35-70 f/2.8), a +1 diopter lens and a test chart at 1 Meter to do the collimation. The difference in optimum focus position of the lens (in motor counts) is found between the wide and narrow focal length, both with and without the +1 diopter lens; these two signed numbers are fed into a statistical model for the lens used, and out comes a number that indicates how much to add or subtract from the shims. Because there is going to be error in the magnification of the lens and the placement of the chart, there will be error in the number. So this needs to be repeated one or two more times, until the differences aproach zero. Should be a really quick, really cheap, really accurate colimation. We need the camera back to build the statistical models for a few lenses.

We expect to have the final PCBs back tuesday of next week, and start shipping 29 February.

Erik--

Is this Canon only, and, if so, when do you expect the earliest of the Nikon mounts to begin shipping?

Thanks for the update! Have you done many footage tests yet? How do the images look? How smooth/manageable is the focus? Can you upload any samples?

(See what happens? Give us an inch and we demand a mile.)

Cool that the 10 pin is back

Eric:

I know it is an added expense and pain with the 10 pin lemo, but it is cool because I think it increases the capability that could be developed if RED would consider the implications of easily controllable and intelligent focus, and iris control motors. Besides the obvious like autofocus and autoiris which would get poo poos from the aficions, I think it could allow automatic iris ramping during speed ramps and some other cool functions that even they couldn't sneer at. Things that are difficult or impossible with traditional cine lenses.

Like everyone else - I can't wait.

Nikon and others with adapters work fine.

Nikon and others with adapters work fine.

Very cool. Will Nikon lenses on the Canon mount (via adapter) be affected by this?

Can anyone provide feedback on the Nikon to Canon adapters?

Since the backfocus/flange focal distance will be calibrated properly for EOS, your Nikon, Contax/Yashica, M42, Leica-R, etc. will work fine. (Assuming they work fine to begin with)

I have already been using these on the current birger mount I have which is the standard industrial mount but doesn't have the RED specific lemos on it.

AquaVideoRed206--

Did you hear from Erik how this news affects a smart Nikon mount?

OK, so what about PL? Will there be an adapter from Canon mount to PL?

... and start shipping 29 February.

Thanks for the update Erik ...

If Feb 29th starts slipping ... any chance of getting a dumb Birger mount in the mean time ??? Sorry ... but had to ask !
