  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

List the 5 most important things you want from scarlet

- 35mm sized sensor (I think it will be for the image matching wit the Red)
- interchangeable lenses
- 2K
- Less than 7000$
- HVX size

I'll post here again, cause it makes me feel good.

I'll even go up to 10, cause it makes me feel even better.

The 10 things that I wish for Scarlet [in order of importance]:

1. S16-sized, 2K sensor.

2. Interchangeable lenses for that sensor size.

3. Redcode RAW 2K.

4. Minimum in-camera processing, like in RED 1, but just for 2K.

5. Varispeed 1-60 fps for 2K, maybe higher for an eventual 720p windowed mode, but 1-60 for 2K would be just fiiiiiiiiine.

6. Tapeless workflow: CF cards; or compatibility with RedDrive; or capability for direct-to-laptop\HDD capture through FW 800 [and OnLocation-like software monitoring... please Santa Jim :)].

7. To be able to use Redcine [naturally].

8. I'd sacrifice on-board monitoring options to minimum [like a nice even-SD onboard EVF or LCD]; BUT - capability for external pro monitoring through Hd-SDI and\or HDMI ports.

9. Minimum onboard audio capabilities. A simple on-board non-pro stereo mic would do for reference. Audio recorded separately - not included.

10. ~ 10k $ price. I'd prefer to pay ~10k and have most of these cookies [especially the underlined ones] than to pay ~5k $ and not have them.

I'm the king of wishful thinking.

Peace.

P.S. Oh, the suspence around Scarlet and the new Builds is just killing me...

So you want a RED One with a 2K sensor at a $10K discount? Doesn't exactly inspire the word "pocket".

Why is it that people are asking for things like 12bit, and 12 stops of latitude if the Red One doesn't even do those things? This camera isn't going to be equal to or better than Red One for half the money. Maybe some of you are joking.
In keeping with the spirit here, maybe Scarlet is a program from Red that actually PAYS YOU to use a Red One. Scarlet in this case would refer to the bleeding of cash from Red's coffers.

Well said. If Scarlet comes in fixed lens 2k 4:4:4 at $3000 or under they will be blowing away almost every camera in the under 10k range.

I have Big pockets ! :detective2:

No, but Scarlet will be a professional camera to use with the Red One for a second or third cam (I think). So the image of the Red One and the Scarlet should match correctly. The Scarlet must have interchangeable lenses for use the same thant the Red One, and a big sensor.

The Scarlet wouldn't replace the Red One of course. High speed, Chroma Key,... are reserved to the Red One.

Dear RED Team,
if the Scarlet out "only" 2K resolution ... good idea ( i think ) the optional 4K upgrade for extra cost

If it's built around a 2K sensor, how are you going to upgrade without re-engineering the whole camera?

The upgrade is Red One.

make 4K sensor

out Scarlet 2K (normal) and optional software or chip upgrade to 4K ( limited 24P, 25P) feature ...
and use with Red One like "B" cam

But Red made a 4K camera, it's called the Red One. They stated that Scarlet would not compete with their already released camera and making it 2K native pretty much takes care of that now doesn't it?

i don't care what sensor size it is or whether it's got interchangeable lenses or a built in one. i don't care if it does 2k or 4k.

the only things i want from the scarlet are (in order of importance)

1. high native iso. like 600 or more. (this is the most important thing in the world to me)
2. inbuilt recorded image flip. for use with 35mm adapters.
3. 25p (this is pretty much a given but it's important)
4. high res monitor of some sort. for focusing.
5. footage can be edited on a 2 year old G4 ibook

price of around 2k

basically i see this thing as the perfect 35mm adapter cam.

I find it incredibly entertaining that people want a professional cinema camera for $2000. Great if it can be done, but my thinking is "yeah right". Maybe if they sell just the sensor and the mount and charge another couple thousand for the processing and storage (or send it like a SI-2K mini to a computer to process and store).

you can already buy a 2/3 inch 1080p60 sensor head for $2000. it's got inbuilt compression and just uses a computer to control and store the data. how much is a controller board and a CF port?

You can, Sumix, but its also got no useable processing software, no on board processing or storage, and they generously give you an API to write applications against as there is not a supported NLE or processing software package to work with. I'd love to buy a Sumix if I had time to write code for processing, spent a couple thousand for a new laptop and raid setup to store and process the information. One thing that stops me is the lack of users, support and reference material to make me comfortable in that purchase.

And like I said, $2000 is a good price if its just a sensor head. And from Red I'd say it would be top quality and reliable. SI-2k mini is very similar to the Sumix, but costs a LOT more cause of what additional things they offer for the camera. You pay for what you get...Red is changing that paradigm though and I'm excited to see what they bring to the market.

silverplated

silverplated

1) 1080 60p
2) solid state recording on CF cards.. or even 32 gb micro drives.
3) autofocus
4) 20X zoom. with macro ability
5) onboard audio

I am like Akube, but with higher/lower expectations.

1) 2K 30p
2) record to SDHC cards (ubiquitous, cheap, and sold at COSTCO)
3) AF w/ image stabilizer
4) I want 20x zoom but I think that that is more than the RED team can engineer. A leica/RED mount that can accept rangefinder prime lenses is probably more realistic. Even a 10x zoom is asking too much. The most the Red team could do would be a 3x zoom. (Please prove me wrong.)
5) built in mic and built in LED ring light for macro work.

6) silver plated, like the cars in Emirates.

red has already developed a codec, processing, storage and post work flow. all they would need to do is take a sumix like head and ad a controller board and a CF port.

that's basically what i think it'll be. it shouldn't cost much more than the sumix. maybe 2-3 grand. it's completely feasible and it'd be pocket sized :D

Well Jim did say he planned on selling a lot of these. The biggest cost in a camera like this is engineering efforts, building around a form factor and making it work for a wide audience. Not saying it cannot be done, but I'm skeptical. They have a lot of the tools, but there are a lot more components and work than simply slapping a sensor with a controller board and a CF port. I'd rather get a $7000 well engineered camera that works for a broad range of applications thats bullet proof in design than a $2000 quick fix solution that looks good on paper. You're paying for the design and engineering.
