  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 14 and 15...

haha. no i was serious. i guess that doesnt make sense then? maybe i was thinking about redcine improvements, i dunno..

for some reason i thought if they released something that improved noise, it could change stuff you had shot on prior builds, but i guess that doesnt make sense as the build is how the cam creates the footage? man i have no idea. im confused now. can someone else chime in and confirm what jbeale is saying

The firmware runs on the embedded processor inside the camera. It controls all the operations of the camera, including the creation of the raw R3D files when you hit the record button.

Once you have your R3D files out of the camera, it is up to whatever software you use on your workstation- Red Alert, Redcine, etc. to interpret the existing R3D data and move it into the rest of your image pipeline. The camera firmware is what originally wrote the image data and meta-data into the file inside the camera, but that's it. The firmware plays no role outside the camera.

My understanding is that Build 12, Build 14, Build 15 etc. refer to specific builds of the camera firmware. I think the Mac and PC software apps (Redcine etc.) have some other version numbering system.

Note: I don't work for Red or have any special knowledge of Red internals. This is just a description of the industry standard meaning of the word "firmware". I'm presuming they use the word to mean what it normally does.

Beware of too much hype, that can snap back. Exhibit A: Steve Jobs and this year's Macworld Keynote.

I guess it's just since they've already promised us the world and now announce that these builds will have things that'll blow us away that they never even announced? Well slow down there, does it bring back the dead? :-). I am definitely very curious to see how far the rabbit hole goes!

We already know that the B14 update is going to dramatically change (and presumably encrypt ) REDCode files. It stands to reason that a new debayer algorithm is going to be part of this rollout which would improve old footage marginally (unless they've discovered some new super fancy amazing debayer.) I expect noise in the DSP is going to be improved and they've made it no longer JP2 compliant with some new compression engine to improve compression quality.

I guess it's just semantics. Right now, according to www.red.com/support, the camera firmware is Release Build 13 (v1.8.8), Redcine is v1.0.2 Build 74 and Red Alert is v1.3.4 (Build ? 26?).

Seems like they all have separate numbering systems so I interpreted "Build 14" for example to be specifically firmware only. But of course you're right that if the update is so big it breaks the other apps, it must be part of a rollout including a new Redcine, Redalert, Quicktime plugin, Scratch etc. and maybe would be called the Big Build 14 Toolchain Shakeup release, or something.

Hmmm... then there is a bit of a discontinuity. Big REDCode change was supposed to be in 14 wasn't it?

There are enough "big" changes to spread them over Build 14 & 15. Both will be considered "landmark".

There will always be changes and improvements. Build 13 is an audio fix.

Change is philosophy number one around here. They are based on added features and fixes for problems.

Build 14 has nothing to do with opening up hooks to REDCODE. I expect there will be several new builds before NAB.

build #20 by NAB; sex and 500fps ! all from the same camera, landmark !!!

Im not sure who I am, but I know I don`t like me. When I was a small child I saw myself in the mirror, I looked me straight in the eye and said "If we ever meet, I will kill you". Anyway, whats a troll? (in relation to a forum etc)

Completely off topic:

Shutter your signature quote about trains is mis-attributed. To my knowledge that wasn't written by any president but by a town council.

I haven't looked into it too much. Im blindly following what my CIV professor in college taught. Ether way I thought it was a very funny quote. I wouldn't doubt if Martin Van Buren said that though, not one of Americas better presidents. Kind of a moron.

We will do something big for NAB.
Sweet! This will be my first NAB and first Red-affiliated meeting with a large group of people. I'm totally excited. You guys sound like a great group to throw one back with. I look forward to meeting all face to face!

Der RED Haus just doesn't have the same vibe this year up at Park City, *sigh*...

:)

the RED party at sundance this year is not our RED party.. it happens to be the name of one of the features there ( that wasnt shot on RED ). Weve been getting calls about it all month.

Unfortunately we are too busy getting cameras out the door to go this year, I imagine there would be quite a few pissed off reservation holders out there if they knew we were drunk and face down in a cabin in park city instead of picking and packing their cameras :)

12 days since you posted this thread !!!
We deserve some information of what is coming and more or less when is it coming. Is great to let us thinking what is coming for a while but this is just going to far...

I believe Jim has tried announcing target dates before. When they didn't hit the target, people complained. Looks like they've learned from that...
