  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has the dead arisen?

i’m not a moderator so I can’t say what officially happened.
From my observations, the board briefly switched to a policy where messages had to be approved by a moderator before they were public on the board.
This might have been a response to surge in bot accounts and posts.
After about a month of these moderated posts the board was locked where no one could post. The locked board started in November ‘25.
Now in April 2026 the board appears to be reopened. Unfortunately many bot accounts and posts still exist.

For now “chill till the next episode” …

Briefly switched to moderator approval, yet the approval system was broken. Not sure what's up around here anymore and the spam is out of control.

I keep reporting the spam but I'm not seeing any of it getting taken down based on my reports.

I don't know who is doing what here anymore or if any moderators still exist. I still have partial moderator access or ability. I can select threads and posts for moderation, but I can't actually approve or delete anything. It's weird. So I've just been stopping by once every few weeks to see what's happening... Not much, unfortunately.

I'm glad to see the forum back up again. Spam has been a problem everywhere on all of the other forums that I have visited as well.

Nice to see the crew steadily coming back.
I myself prefer this board to anywhere else and am committed to seeing it continue.

I hope to post a bit more as soon as I get through some work I have to finish.

Yes the bots and spam are an issue.
We’re surrounded by them.
Kind of reminds of this classic scene.

Are any moderators with ban/delete power still active? The entire RED DISCUSSION page is full of advertising spam posts and reporting them seems to do nothing.

Yeah... Some of my mod privileges seem to be working today. I was feeling cheeky enough and cleaned all the spam posted in the last 25-ish days plus everything visible from the main forum page. Looks tidier now. Any chance we can get some proper spam filtering on here? Not sure how well this forum software is even supported these days. But it seems some people still find value on this site.

Hey Jeff,
I and at least one other member of the board has expressed interest in keeping this board
clean of spam. Posts are getting lost in this bot storm and it would be unrealistic for cleanup
to be placed on one person's shoulders.

Controlling spam on these forums as they currently exist is an exercise in futility. I'm pretty sure most of the spam bots don't even register themselves as proper user accounts, but bypass the "security" employed by this garbage forum software and direct-inject their posts. If there were a couple of us who had enough free time to stop by and do some spam cleaning for 15 minutes a few days per week, it could be managed. Completely not ideal in any way, but manageable in that form. Unfortunately I have no way to delegate any such abilities to others.

I know Phil is still badged as an administrator, but I couldn't tell you who is actually in charge of the forums anymore. I don't know if there is a budget or any official support from RED at this point. I get that most people have left for other social platforms and while that's nice for showing off your stuff and general commentary, it's not as ideal for more articulate or intimate discussion. Not to mention having to wade through all the toxic political crap, relentless ads, and social BS just to find what we're looking for.

I'm up for volunteering to help manage the spam. Granted, I'm deep into some projects and shoots but I will make it point to make time
for freeing the board of spam. I know of another trustworthy member who expressed interest as well.
For many reasons (some you notably pointed out) RU still has considerable value for industry/craft discussion
and a place for REDusers to meet. IG and YT comments are generally thin and FB is not happening for me.

I know the past year has helped track down various firmware bugs and this board was very useful for trading notes between users.

There was an attempt to reach Phil but did not hear anything. Perhaps we try again.
