Sony BURANO Camera Teased

heh. 2 years nearly to the day. I'll say it would probably take about a year-ish to make it right and I suspect that's what's going on. Jarred has teased it recently, so we do have confirmation to a degree that stuff is being worked on.

I'm a little more grounded on DSMC3 being an entirely new ecosystem. Not saying it's like RED making the RED One or DSMC2 bodies all over again, but it's moderately the case. And we had to wait for an EVF in both cases there as well. At this point I'm more curious what it will cost and what it will do however. I personally just want it relatively small, low power, and with a decent flexible mounting solution.

I'm unsure about how or if the two major industry strikes have come into play on product releases this year, but I certainly know for other manufacturers it's played a huge role on some releases and even personel related things.

Guessing the impact is they're delaying some announcements? No point having peak hype (which is usually immediately after it is released) for a product during a time period when everyone is broke with zero money coming in the door.

Tracking interest and ownership of the FX9 in particular was/is fascinating. It did sale, but there was the notably drop-off as it was extreme. And more or less, yes I think it's the no man's land analogy.

In the case of Burano, with Venice doing it's job, I think Sony has created enough demand for the camera currently and it will likely be a series they build upon. There's a good chance there will be more Buranos in the world than Venice II cameras due to it's price point and it will likely be more profitable. That's all fine really with me.

Sony gets criticized a bit for "infinitely segmenting" their camera lineups a bunch, but they are a very large company and their business is to sell new product. Companies like RED or ARRI can never "do that that way" essentially as it would nuke their core products. At least where we are currently in the industry. I think Venice II is a fine camera btw. It's in the Raptor/Monstro arena for me and that's why I'm cool with it really. But I have extreme firmware gripes and other things which kept me from investing in the system day one.

To the other point, delaying announcements, but also speculative profitability during a time when maximum sales currently don't exist. R&D is expensive and the market is not "stable". We're a bit over 4 months into this strike, and for those close to the fire, we knew it was coming last October/November. There was an impact of just the potential looming WGA, SAG, and DGA strikes back then, though not as severe during the actual strike, it was enough for people start realistically strategizing and postponing production work. DGA tipped of a few folks that they would resolve, but WGA and SAG were a certainty. So here we are.

And not to put too fine a point on it. If we resolve in October as many would hope, momentum won't be gained for several months. I spoke to a few dealers to get a bead on Burano preorders, and it's doing okay, but if things were "working as usual" that number would certainly be higher. And perhaps to Sony's credit, this camera isn't going to be released until things are moving semi-normal again. If we're still striking in Spring 2024, there are going to far bigger issues at play however. I don't think that will be the case though.

If you're curious, here's my current wants:
- Komodo-X needs an Arca Plate that is compatible with the Raptor baseplate system IMO.

Off topic here, but......

Well then. As of 4:44am PST on 09/14/2023 we can now remove this particular thing off my list of wants.

https://www.red.com/komodo-riser-plate

If you're curious, the baseplate I've been using on my Komodo-X right up to this very minute was something I "built dirty and quick" and then grinded the heck out of.

Key thing here is just getting optical center to the height of V-Raptor 8K VV or S35 via the V-Raptor Quick Release Platform Pack. Which probably could be called DSMC3 QRPP or whatever now that this exists.

I think that 120 FPS and Dual ISO, along with synthetic shutter in post, are a marriage made in heaven for those who dislike motion judder artifacts in HDR.

Looks like Sony's updated answer to RED Control.
I heard the earlier Sony app had a kind of low res image so would be interesting how this one performs.

Wireless video and camera control is one of those features that fundamentally changes the way one works on set particular
the integration with smart phones and tablets.

Was just using RED Control/RED Control Pro combo on a doc project filmed with my video professor from years ago.
He was quite impressed.

Brian,

Yeah, I think the RED control app. made remotely controlling the different parameters of a camera with an app a must for all other camera manufacturers from this point forward.

Indeed. As much as I like the size and IQ of Komodo, the wireless control/video RED Control/Pro combo was perhaps the biggest standout feature.

The only thing I want from RED is more cameras, more easy way to be in the ecosystem. Burno footage half the time looks like Blackmagic pocket 4k footage. Even CVP couldn't make good footage with it, and the new Cooke affordable lenses.

Red and Arri have the best image.

Only thing I want form Red, more cameras, easier to get them, maybe a hair lower cost to help with that. NO CABLES. NONE. Like DSMC2. TOOL LESS MONITORS, and modules, like DSMC2.

Maybe some kind of modular thing where you could have a Blackmagic type body, but then take out the (beefed up) sensor module, and place it in a Komodo type body. Red was supposed to be modular. If we are going to have to go ad hoc for aks as seems to be, may as well go all the way and allow us to ad hoc the camera itself.

But regardless... Komodo x is almost there, v raptor s35 is almost there... (with a speed booster). I guess I will await the next release from RED (dsmc4?) or do a Komodo X. The only thing is I miss when RED was 8k and that was leading edge. I do miss having 8k. 6K never feels leading edge to me.

Also I was a big fan of being able to remove and or replace the OLPF.

I personally don't care at all about global shutter.
I have seen the Burano CVP video and yes also their Vraptor videos they dont create something flashy like The Killer.

Burano offers the technology that Red won't offer in the next 10 years.
Built-in ND filters with clear option right in front of the sensor without even needing a 4K $ mount or any other bad side products? Yeah, i call that innovation sorry.
IS sensor? Sorry, that's not gonna happen with Red until the 2040s.
Plus Burano crushes any other camera in shadows in high iso mode (3200 base) sorry you are not there with V Raptor.
