  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Horrific noise when doing car mount driving scene - black shade?

Hi guys, recent Komodo owner, had a scarlet W before so am aware of black shade principles.

Mounted the Komodo on a car rig on the bonnet a bit ago, didn't black shade totally forgot :( the first 10-20 seconds of the clip are fine then gradually gets more noise with a pink grain to it throughout, not unfixable in post with NR thankfully but im just wondering is that because the temp sensor was changing inside as the air was passing through on the car?

Few questions on how to avoid:

If I black shade when the car is stationary then drive, will I encounter the same issue?

Have another car mount scene coming up shortly - what is the best approach?

I would assume mount the Komodo, and then take it for a drive to get it to the cool temp that would be when driving through the air, then black shade and do the take relatively soon after so it doesn't change temp / warm up?

Lastly, would it be advantageous to wrap the body in a bag of some kind so not so much cold air rushes through the camera housing whilst driving?

Thanks ahead

Can send pics if needed difficult as its only 2mb max..

Users keep bringing up issues with Komodo and the threads and complaints get squashed via red’s damage control monkeys. I wouldn’t be surprised if this thread gets shut down too. Any bad publicity Red removes.

Komodo and helium are both notorious for horrible noise issues. If the sensor is not in its perfect black shaded temp and calibration, all hell breaks loose on the noise. It’s not like MX or dragon, which were a heck of a lot more forgiving and quite honestly, superior cams. Shooting shouldn’t be this difficult, but it is with reds latest cams.

yes, you can better acclimate the camera to the environment, then re-black shade. It may or may not help though.

Haha I wasnt aware censorship was a thing with red, obviously don't like the bad press, maybe they shouldn't have so many sensor issues if they don't want the negative feedback.

Yeah was atrociously bad pink grainy noise.

I feel like bagging the camera may help as all that cold air rushing through the sensors inside probably is getting it to pretty bad temps, im just curious how FPV flyers get around this issue as they can't black shade in mid air flight so would have to fly, get to cold temp, land, black shade, take off and quickly get the take, and probably repeat.

my scarlet W was amazing, tbh I don't think I really ever calibrated it in years of owning it and never really had any noise complaints. not sure what went wrong with these new sensors.

As the primary mod here who hasn't deleted a post in years, curious just who or what the damage control monkeys are.

Anyways.

It's all about camera temperature and shutter speed. I suspect temperature is the hiccup you're experiencing as the wind is cooling the camera way down.

Sensor Calibration doesn't take long now. If you're hitting a pretty dynamic temperature change, like 20-30 degrees, and the camera is alerting you the calibration needs to be run. It's ideal to investigate how to either prevent the temp change or get the camera there first. Moderately the same practice for all cameras that can calibrate.

We sometimes would hard mount Komodos to fixed wings and to tackle that I would keep the Komodo in front of the AC vent to cool down. But equally as potent was doing a rehearsal and then running the calibration right after one of those. I do fairly high end work with Raptors and I actively monitor the temperature and ambient temperature of the camera, housings, gear, etc. More or less to track variables and apply some technique as needed.

The biggest change in more recent RED sensors is very tied to sensor technology and sensor readout. You want to stay on top of calibration a bit more, but at the same time Sensor Calibration takes far less time than ever. I pretty much run it daily on Raptor when working outdoors due to temp shift and also because it's not a big deal and prevents costly chaos from occurring. But I also will happily let it go if the environment is temp stable.

Phil Holland - there was a thread that was visible just last night, and this morning, it’s now gone. Was bad publicity on Komodo. It’s the damage suppression that really just puts a bad taste in peoples mouths. No camera is perfect…but with people not being able to talk about problems they encounter, it turns this into just a red fan boy forum as opposed to a community that’s able to help and support one another. Through good times and bad

Speaking as someone who used to do this, sometimes an OP can be quick to blame the company, before either realizing: 1) the issue's not red's fault, or 2) red support quickly helped them resolve the issue, and it's not worth leaving up the complaint. After that, it's not uncommon for someone to delete their own post, especially if the wording is particularly critical. Again, I've done this. It was a bad decision. Anyone's best course of action is to simply reach out to Red Support, and treat them like real people, not reps of faceless corporate entity, and patiently work with them as they try to diagnose your problem. Yes, Red's a company, and profits are the main goal at the end of the day, but contacting support isn't like trying to draw blood from a stone, as it might be with your ISP or cell provider, for example. There are a few things I don't love about owning a Red, but their Support team has never been on that very short list.

"Hello, there is nothing wrong with the post, but I want to remove the whole topic. Can anyone help me with that?" - That's the email I got as a mod regarding that topic.

Unknown who removed that thread, but there were requests by the original poster to take it down because it was resolved well by RED via warrantee in a positive way. I left it up mainly because I thought it was a good showing of a very loud "you bad company you" to "wow that's great customer service". I'll see what other mods are modding on that front. And I think to the point, that thread was up the entire time it took to get that resolved, which due to location of the world sounded like a journey in itself.

RED's had hiccups in the past, but their support is actually really good when it comes down to it.
