  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Gyro Data being implemented in all BlackMagic Pocket cameras

I much prefer the look of Komodo to the BMPCC6K, but Blackmagic implementing their cameras' gyro data in Resolve for stabilization is a game changer. I'm bringing it up in this thread because there's been talk in the past of Komodo containing a gyro sensor. Those BM cameras are already so well designed for handheld work, shaky footage aside (same with Komodo). So I bet this will sway a few more people toward the BMPCC6K.

When I say game changer, I'm ignoring Sony Catalyst of course. It's the direct Resolve integration that excites me the most. I'm definitely going to borrow a friend's BMPCC6K to test this out as soon as they update Resolve to support it.

*All of this being said, Komodo and BMPCC6K remain vastly different cameras in my mind. Beyond their individual looks/IQ/all of that, the poor rolling shutter performance of the BMPCC6K (comparable to a global shutter) means I probably wouldn't consider them for the same exact types of gigs. Not to mention the cost disparity puts them in somewhat different categories. Still, I see a lot of people weighing each option as a "first real cinema camera" so that alone I think justifies the juxtaposition.

Also, RED, if possible, please...! :)

Can you give us a link with the technical data about this new feature?

There isn’t much technical data out yet, but the news is all over the usual sites. Blackmagic just announced it today alongside the BMPCC6K G2. Apparently all pocket cameras (even the 4K) can record gyro data. The latest camera firmware and Resolve update are supposed to unlock this feature. All they’ve stated is that the gyro data will be recorded as metadata stored in the BRAW file which can then be used for stabilization.

Actually we even don't know if the Komodo has or not a gyro inside. Not a single official word about it, even a simple "NO forget it". With a gyro data managed directly inside Resolve we have a huge feature in the hands of BM owners and that will be truly amazing if that can happen for us too.

Ok ive watched youtube videos of people using it, looked like some 4th party pos app.

I guess its... professional.

Well, it’s certainly better than what Red offers… which so far is nothing. We can’t even get an answer as to weather or not the Komodo has a gyro sensor, let alone an app to stabilize utilizing metadata collected by it. There is a real possibility that BMD will add gyro data support for Sony cameras. Looks to be zero chance of this for Red cameras.

I do wish Red would be more transparent about this subject. At least give us a yes or no as to weather the camera has a gyroscope.

What's interesting to me is that BMD snuck this in 6 months ago and didn't tell anybody about it. And the new firmware will activate this feature on all their recent Pocket Cinema Camera models. It's a clever idea.

I've been advocating for Red implementing this as a RAW setting for many years now and instead people are just arguing against that idea when I bring it up. Like, there has to be a reason for it not to be added and therefore we must defend Red's decision to just ignore this feature.

If Red could, for once, listen to this before the competition speeds past them on this. I've said it so many times now, implement a stabilization slider that works with the gyro data, if Komodo has a gyro, then utilize it and it will add value to older systems as well.

Then, investigate z depth recording for depth map compositing. Even in this matter BMD is ahead with their depth map feature in Resolve 18, which could very easily be something they manage to get into their cameras in the future.

It's such a waste of potential not to explore these features because Red could have an edge on this before it becomes "the next big thing" in filmmaking but I see nothing of such an innovation intent with Raptor. Red seems to still struggle with getting the most basic and standardized features into a camera in order to compete with Sony and Arri, but if they can't they need features that sets them apart. With the new Arri I have a hard time seeing Red getting ahead of the curve without actually innovating out of that sink hole.
