  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ARRI 4K Super 35 Camera Will be Launched Next Month

Doubtful, he works so much with splits, stabilizations, and VFX reframing that 4.5K won't cut it. I think it's probably guaranteed that he'll work with the Raptor for now.

Yeah I was kind of kidding although his DP shot one of the tests. Does Red still have HDR-X or is that long gone? That was a great feature.

Good question about internal de-noising. Any more info on that? Is the texture management in part disabling that? Or adding a layer of grain on top of it? Seems a little ridiculous denoising and then re-noising in camera.

Alexa always where lower than 800iso with some strange noise going on on low light. And Red was always falsly rated to 800.

To compare make an 3200 8k VS 200 iso 4.6k test on a 4k output.

The camera has internal denoise but who cares?

Patrick,

I think that is mainly for the "ENHANCED SENSITIVITY MODE". From NEWSSHOOTER below:

"ARRI has also added a secondary EI setting called Enhanced Sensitivity Mode. Essentially this is a mode where more noise reduction is applied. This mode is available from EI 2560 to EI 6400 and it is denoted by the EI value having the letters ES after it. ARRI hasn’t made the Enhanced Sensitivity Mode for lower EI values because at settings under EI 2560 it didn’t make a big difference

These Enhanced Sensitivity Mode settings are available in the same place where you find the regular EI values.

Anytime you shoot in the Enhanced Sensitivity Mode, the noise reduction is getting baked into both ARRIRAW and ProRes files.

So how does the Enhanced Sensitivity Mode actually work and what is it doing? Well, I am glad you asked. If, for example, you are shooting at 24fps and 180° shutter angle, half the time the camera is capturing an image, and half the time it isn’t. So what ARRI has done is to utilize that time when the camera isn’t capturing an image to have the camera capture a second image. They are then just taking the noise reduction that is being applied to that second image and combining it with the noise from the first image to reduce the noise of the image that is actually being recorded. The second frame is then thrown away because there is no need to process it. This may all sound complicated, but it is actually a very smart way of applying noise reduction without affecting the image in an overly negative way.

The issue with noise reduction is if you just have one frame, the algorithm that is being used can have a hard time trying to differentiate between fine image detail and noise. Because noise is random, the moment you have two frames, it becomes a lot easier to distinguish between noise and fine image detail."

So it's an light hungry sensor who still struggle with noise.
Wich should be present in the normal low iso mode, if you push the 4 lowest stops of those17.

The original Alexa is very noisy too, even at 800 ISO. The Alexa might not be the camera for you, the Raptor might be a better choice at this price point for resolution. Or the Venice for noise. Tbd I guess. I like noise texture, I prefer film (noisiest of all) and the Dragon sensor to the Gemini because of the texture.

When I started shooting I was working with <200 ISO film and 50 ISO 35mm adapter set ups – so 800 ISO still seems plenty fast for me.

I can't afford to buy any of them now but am still very curious about the new log gamma and noise texture as I expect to work with this camera often.

CVP conducted an OVER/UNDER test with the Alexa Mini, Alexa Mini LF and the Alexa 35 and at 7-1/3rd Stops over it held on to color without clipping also very well against the other two. The shadows did look a little bit better than some previous tests I've seen but not a major improvement (CVP review video from about the 9:51 to 12:17 minute marks)

Thanks for that link. Yes it's horrible at 6400iso (not usuable).
Low light capability int's just about high iso but also is part of the DR of a camera. Shooting at night in the city is also part of todays cinemathography.

With the first Keynote speaker, he said that the LF will be around for at least another 2 to 3 years
Honestly why would you choose the LF over the 35? I can't think of a single reason. I can't even think why anyone would choose the 65 over the 35.

This is correct. They will need to do something rather different to scale this up in 2-3 years.
Imagine what Red will come up with by then!

As I stated previously, I think the S-35 image size is the perfect balance between shallow depth of field, frame size for a given lens and for a gigantic choice of lenses to choose from. I still like the look of the images from the Leica Summilux-C and Summicron-C and the ARRI Ultra Primes, Master Primes and Master Anamorphic lenses. You can use these cropped on a full frame sensor but I love the way they look on a S-35 sensored image at full resolution better.
