  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Monstro VS V-Raptor…….

Polka dots gone, magenta haze gone, better shadows.... Hopefully skin tone will be also improved. Size, heat, media transfer speeds, frame rates, noise performance. Honestly unless we start seeing unseen problems, this Raptor is a clean sweep. Pretty significant upgrade for my needs.

Hey Kemalettin, Ive received my V Raptor and I'm in the process of getting all the support on it to make it functional. I did some quick test from the door of my garage the last couple afternoons and in to the full dark street and single street light shots, and Im seeing the same as Phil mentioned that the V Raptor in low light seems noticeably cleaner. There is a Cromatic Noise reduction switch that is new in latest REDCine X update that cleans up a lot of the magenta and purple and some of the blue noise you usually see when its a very dark or low light shot. So Ill have to see how that compares to what the Monstro vs Raptor sees with and with out that Cromatic Noise switch turned on or off.

After I get a way to mount it on the tripod in a couple days so I can put it side by side with my Monstro Ill post some comparison here. But Ill bet that by then most questions will be answered by others or others will have posted by then. Ill bet Phil is cooking his camera and seeing where it starts to break down in image.

I feel ya on the slowmo posts. Great to see but we all really want to see what it will do side by side against its predecessor the Monstro. And in a normal 23.98 format.
Ill just add this, yesterday night I was shooting at 4000iso on that dark street at 4k and 8k 23.98 180 shutter and I was really excited to take it on set with low light and fires for one client that I shoot a lot of that kind of work... the CBS US version of Survivor. So Im super excited to have cleaner low light stuff.

Right now Im feeling like its the next step in RED cameras but only side by side will tell by how much and in what situations.

Ill keep you posted.

Thank you for doing this !!! really appreciate

I did have a Monstro and sold it and got a Raptor. A big thing for me was the smaller, lighter, updated body. One thing that made me happy once I got it in my hands almost a month ago, was how much of an improvement in overall image quality the Raptor sensor is. When I got a Monstro I thought that the Image couldn’t get much better, but the Raptor did it. The high frame rates are a huge plus as well. The RF mount is nice because if I wanted to I could more easily use PL, EF, and RF lenses on one shoot without much down time between. Overall I don’t regret it at all, I just wish the Raptor accessories came out a bit quicker. In my option the Raptor hands down has the best Image quality of any camera on the market right now.

Hey guys,

we’ve asked ourselves why no one has made a comparison between Monstro and Raptor jet. That's why we went to the rental with our Monstro today to do a quick test.
We did a simple shootout with existing light to test primarily dynamic range, skin tones, noise and highlight roll-off. Therefore we’ve used a 35mm Tokina Vista!

Strangely, the Monstro is very cold in terms of white balance compared to the Raptor. The Raptor although has a slight magenta cast, which can also be due to the poor CRI of the fluorescent tubes. We don't know why our Monstro is so cold. Compared to the Mini LF or FX6 it is also 800-1000K colder.

Here are the two frame grabs straight out of camera:

Here again both cameras with roughly synced white balance and tint. We simply used the „Pick WB Tool“ in REDCINE-X on the white RED logo of Marco’s hoodie, as we didn't have much time to test with a proper Color Checker.

Thanks Daniel for doing this and for providing the R3D and Tiff files. A lot people have been waiting for a comparison like this for awhile!

Thanks. They seem very close in IQ, at least going by this single shot.

Daniel,

Thankyou for the comparison shots. A shot like this with no extremes of contrast and muted colours is not likely to exhibit any notable differences between most cameras. Colour picking the WB off something like the "texture" logo on the shirt is problematic. When doing similar I have always been amazed by the variation. You really do need a grey scale chart properly setup if you want to compare. Even with many incremental improvements all round I expect the Raptor to mainly reveal its strengths when the image is pushed towards its limits.

Hi Tom,

yes you are totally right! I’ve made many camera and lens tests during the last years and I always wanted to make them perfect so they will tick every box for everyones interest! This one was special, as I just wanted to know what it looks like compared to Monstro.
We only had one hour with this camera and the installed firmware was not supporting the new DSMC3 Monitor. So we had to update the firmware in the first place. After that the monitor did not work, i was testing several different monitors until I found out that you have to push the lever and move it towards the center of the monitor in order to fully plug in the cable. Man this was so frustrating…

I know there will be somebody doing a propper test with different scenarios. For me, I am happy that I finally got to see “some” differences between those two great cameras. I just wanted to share it, because I know everyone is waiting for this particular comparison!

started both Images from the V-Raptor and Monstro at 5600K to grade both. Atleast to me under this Fluorescent lighting, the Monstro was much easier to correct than the V-raptor and the Monstro looked better and more natural. I personally think the Monstro still has better color separation.

V-Raptor and Monstro both starting from 4500K, the Fluorescent Preset temp from RED. I think they both looked better graded from 4500K instead of 5600K above.

Thanks for the comparison. What about over under test? which cameras have better over under performance?

I can send you some r3ds ? PM me if you want then... the thing is they are very very similar re latitude. (Standard OLPF vs raptor) but this doesn’t really tell the more interesting story... we are keeping our Monstro and raptor!

Interesting to see the subtle differences there between the Monstro and Raptor.

Thanks Daniel.

Thank you for these tests !! , this added with the sensor split glitch will mean
I'll be holding on to my monstro for the time being for sure :courage: .
