RED V-Raptor Sample Footage and Review Portal

Hi Rand,
Which VND is used in that test? Is it a Breakthrough one or one designed by Red and not released yet? Or the Canon one?

Vincent,

I believe it was the Breakthrough VND. But let me ask Russ if he doesn't answer before I do.

Edit:
I believe Russ said it was Red's

It looks to me like a dial controlled VND, similar to the non electric ones. But if he's actually got his hands on the unreleased Red eND that would great. If so...more tests plz.

Brody,

still waiting to hear back from Russ but he stated to me for the video that it was a " Red Varible ND Mount". However, Russ can clear things up.

This is the RED distributed/Canon VND and Mount.

Sorry for the delay.
As I was PMing with Rand about this clip.
This is the thumb wheel version VND from RED which from what I have hard is same as Canon. I posted this as a test to show or see how little color shift there is when rolling down or up the ND. The Boken held very well in that there were very little artifacts. Usually when you really crank down on VND's or similar you start to see the Boken start to change. And the well known Cross pattern. On this VND setup mount it stops you before you get to the Cross pattern or at least thats what it seemed to me. Also I felt that I could use a darker VND filter on supper sunny and say white sandy beach or snow. I was also impressed that even when this was full or near full dark with a very strong Blue hue in the sky is about all you can see. I was able to pull in RCX with ISO and White Balance nearly back to an acceptable image. Giving that the ISO was now 4000... Every day I use the Raptor Im more and more convinced this thing has so much more to offer and were just scratching the surface.

Something Ive been told but haven't confirmed is that you need to have a filter in the mount always to help get proper back focus. Clear, VND or what every your using.

Breakthrough filters is still getting their VND mount ready for market. I believe they are going to get the DFM PL mount released or orders filled and then work on getting their RF EF mount out. But you can still get their filters for the Canon RF EF mount and drop them in your Canon version. Which is what Im planning until theirs is available.

Thanks for that info Russ!

Red Raptor 8k First Test | Skin Tones, Quality, and vs Red Komodo

by Brandon Washington

The Komodo Skin Tones look more Red- The V-Raptor Skin Tone look more Yellow at least to me.

Brandon's Skintone seems to have a more Yellow bias than the other guys under the same lighting conditions for some reason.

I zoomed the Vectorscope Color graph by 2X so it can be seen better.

Rand, I just shot another doc, this time with Raptor as A-Cam and Komodo as B-Cam (couldn't access some of the locations with a full rig, so I had to go handheld Komodo for those spots). Komodo definitely has a different look. The skintone difference shown in Brandon's video is pretty accurate. Granted, thanks to R3D it's still pretty easy to match the cameras.

Also, I shot Raptor at 6K LQ and Komodo at 6K HQ, and the Raptor was still NOTICEABLY clearer, cleaner, and just darn prettier. It appears to be a damn good sensor.

I'm torn because, on one hand, I'd rather shoot everything on Raptor going forward, but I wouldn't have been able to get certain critical shots without Komodo!

Ryan,

Thanks for your observations from someone who has used both the V-raptor and Komodo! What shots do you feel you needed the Komodo for that the V-Raptor might not have been the best choice for?

It was purely a logistics move due to size. It was a 3-day run and gun doc following a "Make-A-Wish" type of organization, with a group of kids getting to visit various NYC attractions and landmarks. So on the 3rd day, we needed to get shots of them at The Edge building in Manhattan, and we were informed by security that no professional video equipment was allowed. I was able to get in by rigging the Komodo with only the Outrigger Handle and by only using the top screen.

Okay, Yeah you're right because the V- Raptor would have required an external monitor which would increase the size which the the Komodo would not have.to have. That's something I think more V- Raptor/ Komodo users and owners will face in a similar situation as you described above.
