  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I know in the past Red has upgraded camera sensors in the older bodies but what about media? For instance with komodo swap out the cfast cards for cfexpress. Having a faster card would give komodo alot more features I believe. Of course its probably a lot more complicated than that but still. Do you think red would offer something like this in the future? I know I know "crash cam" "not meant for A cam" " just get the Raptor" But if red can do it why not? I would pay for that!

That’s just not something that would happen. The media speed is a means to support data crunching from the processing of the camera. Without a more robust brain in the Komodo there would be no need to have a card that can receive such high data rates.

Does anyone really know whether the bottleneck is card read speed or the processor? I would guess they're pretty matched, but, one never knows witout a clear spec.

Actually just look at Reds website, it’s 280mb for Komodo with only 6k 40fps. Then look at helium for ex it’s 300mb with 8k 60fps capability. It doesn’t indicate card speed being the limiter. Especially when the Cfast can push more than that even, around 450mb.

KOMODO ST up to 280 MB/s
KOMODO 6K up to 280 MB/s

Different camera but same story. If you look at mini Mag rated speed limits it’s per camera brain with the same card, not the card limit. People had to pay to upgrade ther epic w brain to handle the higher speeds of weapons.

WEAPON (Carbon Fiber) up to 300 MB/s
RED EPIC-W up to 275 MB/s
WEAPON (Magnesium) up to 225 MB/s
EPIC DRAGON up to 200 MB/s
SCARLET-W up to 170 MB/s
RED RAVEN up to 140 MB/s
SCARLET DRAGON up to 72 MB/s

CFexpress = more power required. New features means new boards and likely new sensor. Also leading to likely additional power requirements.

RED is good at adding what they can in terms of features via firmware updates, but all cameras in the world; their abilities are limited by the hardware used in the camera itself.
