NATURAL HISTORY CINEMATOGRAPHY

Just found this thread!
Some really amazing sample there.
I'm just started (6 years ago) in the natural life shooting, so forgive my sometime amateurish style.
Some FB albums from a personal project I started more than 2 years ago wich involve alot of creatures.

Things are starting to come together with the documentary nonprofit I'm starting with a handful of other people. Here's the trailer for our first major project:

I just uploaded Aquaterrafilms 2013 demo reel to my Vimeo Channel.
It is the first of a few demos in the works- the next one will be mixed with land material
Here is the link.

All sequences shot on with Red Scarlet/ Amphibico Rouge and Light and Motion SOla 4000 / 2000

Thanks for watching! MH

How do you guys deal with the the high volume of storage and batteries required when you're out in the field?

Here's a few screen grabs from a couple hours worth of shooting in SW Florida - potentially more to come if I can find the time to pop out again while I'm here.

Here is my wildlife reel with images shot last year in the south of Portugal, Alentejo region (the region where I'm from and where I live)

The "Montado" forests in Alentejo are one of the places in Europe with more biodiversity, the Cork Oak and Holly Oak forests of the "Montado Alentejano" have a proposal for the inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

All images where shot by me.

About 90% of images where made with RED ONE MX, gopro hero 3+ and canon dslr's where also used in some clips.

would appreciate some feedback...

That looks amazing, Alberto. Really beautiful work. What zoom lens did you have specifically for your nice big pulls? I'm also curious what head and legs combo you choose to hike with as well, everything looked rock solid.

Alberto, Humberto, Allan and all- great work! Lets keep this thread active! Inspirational sequences and projects..... MH

Thank you mates!
Kyle, we used mostly 300mm and 500mm. The zoom out clip was done in post (one of the advantages to shoot in 4K and deliver in 2K...;)
The tripod was a manfrotto 509 with an old manfrotto sticks, not a very light combo but did the job...

PS: Some nice shots there Humberto!
Cheers!

Thanks Alberto,

Your short about the endangered spanish Brown Bear is wonderful, unfortunately is has been extinct in Portugal for more than 100 years, maybe one day if it recovers in Spain it might apear again in the north of Portugal.

I was tin Somiedo 10 years from now, I also saw some bears, the landscapes are fenomenal...

All with RED EPIC?

One of this days we have to develop a big project here in "our" land, something like wild Iberia...

Cheers

Thanks a lot Humberto, its really a privilege to see bears still ruling the north... although there are less than 200 individuals.
This was shot with our old Scarlet, now I have an Epic.
Yes, our nature is really amazing and deserves a big project, shot on RED of course!
We keep in touch
Best!

Well done, Alberto. I hope Spain does a better job preserving their brown bears than California did.

There was an Anna's Hummingbird nest on a low willow branch overhanging Arcata Marsh this Spring, so I had a chance to record some of their parenting behavior.

I missed the first chick fledging, but I stayed at the nest for hours the next day until the second one took its first flights.

Hello Brice
Excellent trailer! love the story line and your filming style...I think mixing natural history with narrative is a powerful path! congratulations on your vision

Thank you Mauricio,
coming from the fiction and music video, I still considering myself as a rookie in the documentary and natural history cinematography.
I'll take your words as encouragement to pursue my home work.
Cheers

For those of you that enjoy underwater-
I finally uploaded a new Blue Marlin sequence... short and sweet. These are not only very rare to see without a hook in its mouth
or dead on a pick up truck- but also as many of you they are extremely difficult to encounter- period.
It is a fun edit to promote the new sequences...

Shot with Red EpicX / Sigma 15 inside an Amphibico Rouge housing.

Christian,

The shot of the moon at the end of the video. What focal length is that? 300mm plus a doubler to make 600mm? You almost have to track the moon at that point to keep framing?

Your work is already excellent Brice. The shots of the bee's are world class. Can't wait to see what you share next.

Thank you Mauricio,
